I don't know how we never knew about this South Knoxville site! We were out driving around exploring the Vestal side of Chapman Hwy & drove past this park, which seemed especially nice to have never heard about it. Full disclosure- when we first pulled into the parking lot, we noticed a car that had a couple making out in the back seat...on a Saturday...in broad daylight...in full view of the road...but I'm willing to chalk this up to some kids making a stupid decision, not to this being a seedy area. Anyway, we didn't really have time to explore the park that day, so we drove off. We came back a few days later and there were several more cars here (none doing anything inappropriate) and we started to explore the park. It has a beautiful stone wall from the entrance through the park, and a path that walks you along the civil war historical site of Fort Higley, with several nice historical signs explaining the importance and history of the site. The park was well kept up and had an area at the top with some chairs set up under a large tree in a clearing. During the fall and winter months, it looks like there would be some nice views of downtown, as you can spot it through the leaves, but the view is mostly obscured during the summer months. Apparently the plan is to connect this though hiking trails to the better known Fort Dickerson on the next ridge over (and Fort Stanley past that) as part of a "Battlefield Loop" in the Knoxville Urban Wilderness trail system. If you find yourself wanting a little bit of history, or a nice, relatively short, and easily accessible walk, this is conveniently located to downtown and is certainly worth checking out! read more
