My son has spent two years at High Bluff as a full time student in 9th and 10th grade. It was, and continues to be, the best decision we could have made for his high school education! He is excelling in all of his classes (including the one's he was sure he couldn't do, like 2nd year Spanish) and just finished up his Sophomore year with straight A's and awards for his school spirit, leadership, and consistent high level of effort in all of his classes. I was blown away with the glowing description these teachers had for my son's academic performance. And to top all of that, when all of the schools got locked down due to the COVID 19 pandemic, High Bluff Academy took on the challenge QUICKLY to move to online the very next week, maintaining the rigorous academics and supportive environment you would expect and hope for. My son is very happy, feels safe, enjoys his friends at school, and especially likes the relationship he has with his teachers. As a parent, I can highly recommend this college prep school with absolutely no reservation. read more

TERRIBLE experience. We gave them a huge amount of money for summer school, and it was one problem after another. From them changing the time of the class by 3 hours the day before it started, to endless problems with the online module locking my daughter out for days until they finally had to switch platforms and start ALL over. She never did finish the course in the time allotted because of these issues and they absolutely refused to give us any money back. I hope that money was truly more important than community trust because they have really terribly impacted my child's ability to graduate on time! read more

I spent six years homeschooling our daughter before high school because we couldn't get a handle on medical conditions that were causing her to have learning issues at the time, and with healthcare the way it is, it took a long time to get diagnoses and relief. If it wasn't for High Bluff Academy, I don't know what we would have done to ensure academic success for her. Our daughter will be going into her third year at HBA, and she's done extremely well the past two years. Her GPA has been 4.0 and 4.2, and her teachers and the administration have all taken an active interest in her success and well being. We're very thankful we found a place where she can excel. read more

HBA is an excellent and wonderful school. As teachers, we can do so much for our students since the classes are so small. We can truly tailor our instruction according to our students needs and interests which is so unique. Unlike many others schools, HBA offers a kind and welcoming environment for students and staff. Most of the teachers have been working at the school for many years. The retention ratio is high because the teachers here love what they do and are treated well. The administration at HBA does a great job supporting our students with college counseling and organizing fun activities for all. read more

What a option we have here in North County. We are really lucky to have an alternative for our kids. Yes, they are very expensive but so worth it. They can go FT or take individual classes here to catch up at their current High School. The small class size and extra help from the teacher is key, at least for my son. Over by Morgan Run so close to Torrey and CCA as well as Cathedral. We have struggled to find the right help for him at his High School and if we could, we would put him in FT here. The only caveat is they can't play sports and that wouldn't work for us leaving his Track behind. But so, far it has been a life saver and we will continue to take more classes here to get him through the rest of High School. This will be the only way possible, and we are so lucky to have this option right here. read more

This is a really excellent school!!! The students are hardworking and the teachers are excellent! I highly recommend this school. Students get personalized attention, tutoring and support. High Bluff Academy is a great school. Really good option for people that are looking for smaller class sizes.

I am so lucky to work at High Bluff Academy as a math and drama teacher, as well as the co-coordinator for social events. HBA is unlike any other school in that it is full of teachers who LOVE what they do and the priority is the students' wellbeing and learning. At HBA, every single student can succeed because we provide a strong support system, both academically and socially, as well as small class sizes. The administration at HBA is always looking for new ways to inspire and involve our students in activities to expand their intellectual horizons, like our new Logic & Philosophy elective and our amazing Friday lunches made by the cooking class. All in all, I can't speak highly enough about this amazing learning environment. Any student would love to be part of our HBA community. read more

We love High Bluff. Both my kids have taken classes over the summer to help give them an edge during the school year. The classes are top notch quality. read more

Your search for a private school can stop here. High Bluff Academy is as good as it gets. Small classroom size, loving, knowledgeable and caring teachers will ensure your child's academic success. Not only did our daughter excel in her academics, her self confidence and self image grew and strengthened with each day spent at the school. She came to High Bluff from a public highschool and her spirit was quite low. Her grades were not good and her self esteem was battered. Fast forward to 2017; she graduated from High Bluff with all A's and won the HAWK award - the highest honor the school bestows. This is a testament to the expert teaching skills and the caring environment of High Bluff. Give a call to the director Jill. It's worth looking into - you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. read more

I have to take a moment to brag about High Bluff Academy. I was at my wits end with Torrey Pines High School and how the teachers there could not be bothered by my son or mentor him to become a great student. At TPHS teachers go through the motions with the goal of just pushing the kids through, not caring if they learn anything or not. Well, in my line of work if I had that attitude and work ethic, people would die. Rest assured, I do not practice the way the teachers do at TPHS. Meanwhile at HBA the teachers were top notch, dedicated and actually cared about the students. Every teacher brought their own unique approach to learning that made a huge difference in my son. We started at HBA for a summer school math class at the recommendation of my co worker. It was a 1:1 math class and my son came home and said that if he had this math teacher at TPHS he would have aced the class. He finally had an appreciation for math and knew what it was like to excel in school. It was infectious. He actually asked to go to HBA for his last year of high school. He found a great deal of academic success at HBA thanks to many very committed hard working teachers who actually care about the success of their students. Thank you HBA. My son is now in a great 4 yr university and thriving thanks to the solid academic foundation he got at HBA. Keep up the good work. I am forever grateful to you and the entire staff for showing him what success feels like. read more

Our daughter attended a summer chemistry class at High Bluff and loved it so much that she wanted to enroll full time. Now that she has switched to High Bluff she has much more confidence and is a lot happier. The teachers are much more knowledgeable than our local (top ranked!) public school. They actually teach the material instead of relying on students to get help from expensive tutors. The small class sizes are helpful too. High Bluff has an active ASB and kids feel included. My daughter is learning more and is less stressed. The classes aren't easier or watered down, the teachers and environment are superior. I highly recommend High Bluff for all types of students from high achievers to students who need extra help to reach their potential. read more

This review is to show the truth about High Bluff that has a facade masking the true reality of the "school," rather than to "get back" at any mistreatment. I believe that when someone gives you a hard time, give them love. This review is also to point out that people deserve to hear the truth. When something is not right, it is right to kindly standing up and peacefully speaking out about a situation so that others may benefit from the information. I went here for a few months and left because the atmosphere was so traumatic. I remember when I got a tour of the school, it seemed to good to be true; sure enough, it was. I was told very specific lies about the academics and student acceptance, to say the least. Though the site boasts accreditation, that means nothing when the education lacks fundamentals (definitely when I was there). On another note, when I was a student, the owner hardly had a minute to speak to me about any urgent concern, whether it was about safety or an unjust situation. I had to let a lot of concerns about safety of others and myself go because she could not lend a listening ear. When I called just recently to ask her how she was and to politely remind her of a promised refund, she immediately said, "I don't have time for you. Good luck with your life," before interrupting me and hanging up. This is clearly not the way to treat anyone. Per credibility, it really does not matter ethically if one is able to go through college if one is so hostile. I kindly ask to seek to improve situations (especially about safety and education) versus looking for ways to earn more money while silencing others who will not give any more money. I am glad though that I do not hold any grudges, and I am very glad to not have to be a part of this "school." I wish all the best, and I know that compassion and goodness wins. read more

As a special education teacher of over 40 years, I highly recommend High Bluff Academy for students with learning challenges. My daughter loved High Bluff for the 2 years that she was there for Math and Science. The teachers are dedicated and took a strong interest in my daughter's success. The small class size made a big difference for my daughter as did the 1 to 1 tutoring that she received. The office staff headed by Nancy and Nick were always available and my daughter felt like the school was home. They worked closely with Torrey Pines to ensure that credits were correctly transferred. High Bluff is a great investment read more

My daughter took a math course at HBA and absolutely loved the teacher, Oscar. We thought the learning experience was amazing. The 'school' itself is definitely extremely money driven and more like a business as opposed to a school. My daughter was signed up for an 8 week course but at the last minute we realized that we wouldn't be able to take the last 2 weeks of the course. HBA told us that the only solution to receive credit for the course was to pay extra for 2 weeks worth of private lessons (15 hours). My daughter only received around 8 hours due to a couple lesson cancellations and we were never refunded the extra amount. read more

I can't say enough about this little school. My son takes AP classes here a la carte, and he loves it. The class sizes are so small, the students develop great bonds with one another and the teachers. The students are international, studious, kind and caring. The teachers are just amazing--they have graduate degrees and a huge love of their subject matters and their students. When the local schools closed down on a Friday due to COVID, High Bluff was fully operating on line by Tuesday morning. And they recognized that this was a time that students needed connection and learning more than ever, so they canceled spring break. My son feels completely supported by this school, and looks forward to every class. It's not cheap, but it's worth every penny. read more

Very good staff and school program. My kid has entered High Bluff Academy as an international student. He has already spent almost three months here and improved a lot! The teacher is very dedicated and supportive. The school principle Ms. Jill Duoto is very attentive to students' daily study and life. We feel so lucky to send our son to High Bluff Academy! read more

I can't say enough wonderful things about this school and staff! My son struggled for years with focus and discipline. With the smaller environment, one on one teaching and tutoring on campus this was a perfect school. He honestly wouldn't have made through high school or accepted into college without the support from Jill, Nancy, Nick and their incredible teachers! They truly care about their students personally and academically. Thank you High Bluff! Lela M. read more

We are lucky to have such a gem in our neighborhood. The teachers are absolutely amazing and the relationship and bond my son had with them motivated him to work hard, thrive, and excel. I highly recommend this well-run school. read more

High Bluff Academy was clearly the enabling factor that brought success to our daughter's academic achievement during the 2011/12 school year in Math as well as promoting much needed family harmony as well. Not all students are a good fit for a 1 to 35/40 ratio in Math and Science in our lovely California Public School System. Torrey Pines is a fantastic school but public school is just that... public school these days. ( I know as I taught it for 30 years in another district in the area) My daughter was the only student in the Algebra class at High Bluff, taught by an outstanding and dedicated teacher who was able to connect with her on all levels. She was able to attend Torrey for all other classes, which were great and take her 4th period at High Bluff. I was fortunate to be able to transport her back and forth which is not an option for everyone, but well worth it. Her self esteem soared and she loved Algebra. Important to note that we came in for the 2nd semester after almost failing the 1st semester at Torrey with 40 students in the class. The TP teacher was great and truly cared, but one can be expected to give individual attention with class sizes as mentioned above. My child needed some individualized help to process the material, and she received it at High Bluff. She also attended for Science during the previous summer with 6 students in a class and another outstanding teacher whose love of Science and teacher was evident. Yes, it is very expensive as most "good things are" but we weighed our 2 summer's vacation plans vs our daughter's self esteem and academic success and had lots of "Staycations," Hence we have a child who actually learned something. It is well worth the consideration. Linda L. read more

The classes are unparalleled! Low class sizes and fantastic support! The tutoring didn't quite match in terms of bringing enough focus/direction to the subject matter. I won't hesitate to sign kids up for classes and even tutoring again though. read more

Small classes, so good teacher to student communication. Lessons are well planned with great additional support should students require this. The only draw back is some of the parents. As they pay for their child's education they feel this gives them a right to get any result they wish. The school is great at accommodating these parents but in some cases the school does so at the detriment of other students in the class. read more

Only used them for summer school for my boys. They have the summer school market in the bag for this area. There are very few places to take high school courses. Small class size and engaged teachers are a plus. Its pretty expensive, so be prepared to pay ALOT. read more

HBA is an AMAZING place to learn! Everyone is fantastic... not only the wonderful teaching staff, but the office staff and director, Jill Duoto, too! We could not give this school a higher recommendation... we are truly grateful to have found High Bluff Academy! read more

Torrey Pines has a great reputation. It just wasn't great for my child. My child's true potential was not being fulfilled at TP. We started with a math tutor at High Bluff because my son drifted off and got lost in a sea of students in his huge TP math class. He was always playing catch up and felt uncomfortable asking questions during class. Our child enjoyed, respected and liked his math teacher at High Bluff, and we choose to finish the class and take the credit from High Bluff. We were able to easily switch out of his TP class and work the class into High Bluff because they have the same bell schedule. HBA's classes coordinate with TPHS and CCA's. Our child actually ended up liking math. We then signed him up for Chemistry after school because he was falling behind again at TP and not getting enough teacher time despite coming in each lunch period. After we saw what was possible at High Bluff Academy, we enrolled our child in there full time spring 2011. He is now in his second semester in HBA's Full Time High School. My child, who is NOT a morning person, starts his classes at 10am which has eliminated most morning fights. He stays late two times a week and because he is taking group plus 1-on-1 classes is able to take and handle 7 courses (1 1/2 semesters of Math, English, History, AP Psyche, Science, PE, Marketing). He works faster one-on-one and can accomplish so much more in less time. My child has an amazing relationship with each one of his teachers. They know him well personally, he's not just a number to them, and they can come to him about assignments as easily as he can reach them when homework questions arise. He is fully accountable for all his actions and can't get away with hiding in the back of a classroom anymore. Jill Duoto, and Staff are intelligent, capable, caring, firm, and fair. Jill is accommodating with each individual student's learning needs and truly cares about each student and their family. School no longer seems like a harrowing experience to our child. He enjoys participating in class discussions, has gained confidence, and is realizing his true potential. We love what High Bluff has given to not only our child, but to our family. We are very confident that colleges will get to see our child's true potential. High Bluff has provided us with this confidence with their individual attention, guidance and accommodation of learning style. Our child's good friend switched to Full Time at High Bluff Academy this fall 2011 after hearing us speak so highly of the school and they are equally as grateful to Jill, Nancy and the rest of the staff at HBA as we are! read more

High Bluff Academy is a terrific school. The teachers are wonderful, caring, and motivated. The kids have the opportunity to learn in a small class size or a one-one setting. The tutoring and classes are both fantastic. High Bluff is able to accomodate each child's individual needs which is what makes each child that goes there successful. When our kids are successful their self-esteem is high which in turn creates a happy child, happy parents, and a passion for education with unlimited dreams. We are so lucky to have such an incredible option for education in Carmel Valley. read more

My daughters experience at High Bluff Academy has been amazing. The teachers are fantastic and offer a level of support that is rare to find. The teachers truly want the students to succeed and make learning interesting and fun, not stressful and overwhelming. Jill has created an environment where all students are supported and nurtured to be the best that they can be. They work around the kids schedules at Torrey Pines which makes it possible for a seamless schedule thus further reducing stress. We are truly grateful to Jill and the entire staff at High Bluff for providing a true gift to students. read more

High Bluff Academy has been a God send to our family and son. The one on one attention and assistance could not be beat. How refreshing to have teachers who actually care about your child and have the extra time to help them succeed. We were particularly impressed with "George" the chem teacher. Not only was he brilliant, but he understood teenagers and was a great communicator. We have referred High Bluff to several friends and they are grateful. read more

We have had a very positive experience here. My son still goes back to visit his chem and physics teacher. This is a great alternative to hardcore science classes at some of our local high schools, but the curriculum is definitely not as challenging. If your child needs a more high school level science class (and a better grade) this is a happier medium. read more
