The station opened in 1840 on the Northern and Eastern Railway Company's line from Stratford to Broxbourne, slightly to the north of the present location. Originally incorporated in 1836 to build a line from London to Cambridge, and thence to York via Lincoln, by 1843 the company had only reached Bishop's Stortford and they were taken over by the Eastern Counties Railway. The station was moved to the present site in 1885. The station was rebuilt in the 1970s and now consists of a rather grim utilitarian brick building on the west (Hertford) platform, with small shelters on both platforms. The station has a self-service ticket machine for use when the ticket office is closed. There is a small cycle rack, a taxi office adjacent to the station, and buses between Waltham Cross and Waltham Abbey stop on the bridge above the station. There is level access to the down (Hertford direction) platform only. The service is provided by National Express East Anglia, providing a basic half-hourly service off-peak from Hertford East to Liverpool Street station Mondays to Saturdays, and hourly on Sunday. Peak hour services Monday to Saturday are roughly every 15 minutes.

Then again, it is a suburban station, and one of the newer ones as well. However, I do notice that the trains don't run nearly as often as they do in the city, but then again this is pretty much the pen-ultimate station on the line, so yeah, I get that. Has a taxi rank just in front of the barriers and during the day a little kiosk that's sells papers and sweets and also tops up you oyster card if there is a que for the machine as the ticket office is closed again. It is the 2nd station from the start of the Piccadilly line, so you normally get a seat at rush hour and a nice fresh paper. Okay, I've had friends who have said that they catch the Piccadilly Line from Heathrow simply because the train terminates here. Honestly, don't expect all that much, there isn't even a pub near by, and the station does remind me of that architectural style known as brutalism. Anyway, it is not only a terminus station, but it feels as if it is one of those newer housing developments, but not hugely knew. Anyway, there are better places to end up than Cockfosters.

This is one of my local tube stations so I use it very frequently to get in and out of town…read more The first thing you should know is that the display on the platform that indicates when the next train will arrive is always being changed in the mornings. What I mean is that if it says 1 minute for a bank train and 3 minutes for a charing x train, and you decide to wait they will often change it at the last minute. Usually if it says 1 minute it is unlikely to change but any thing else is subject to a destination change and this is always happening. If you are in a hurry, get on the first available train and change at Camden Town. This is otherwise a nice and always very clean station. They have toilets on the platform which is unusual for the underground. The men's is on the Barnet platform and the woman's is on the London platform (you can simply walk across if you need to go). The ticket office is not always open but you can usually find an attendant wondering around.

We specifically came here because we purchased a Eurostar train ticket to Paris. From arriving, to checking in, going through customs, it was very organized and people paid attention. It wasn't chaos as it tends to get in the US. The whole process to getting on and off the train was a piece of cake-definitely not stressful at all. If you are trying to get to Paris, Amsterdam, or any outer cities near London, this is the place to be when needing to take a train. I highly recommend Eurostar since it is a high speed train and will get you to your next destination fairly quick. If you are not planning to leave the city, I still recommend checking it out since it is a beauty and I heard, Harry Potter was filmed here.

But I suspect that I have given my reason for that as well. It looks like the Overground has basically repurposed old tracks and turned them into a suburban railway. In the mornings on the commute the upside is that there is an excellent Nisa by the entrance…read morebarriers and coffee shop so that's a plus. However, when there are train delays as there so often are you can find yourself running up and over the platforms as they keep changing the platforms and the staff don't really know what is going on. You see lots of staff milling about but they aren't that helpful. The ticket desk can take ages which can be problematic if you are in a rush. It's well lit inside the train station so that's good at night and there is a 24/7 waiting room open for when it is blowing a hooly outside. They also have vending machines on the platform so no matter what time it is you can get a drink or crisps or something. It's kept really clean.
