ALWAYS packed. No ranger to push pace of play. Turn public down every Wednesday for a private league. Tee boxes rarely change.

Quick take on this morning's round at The Bear…read more The setup is here is beyond easy. Head to the below link, change the date to whatever you want and book it. Payment is due at the time of check in and they will send you auto emails when you book about your tee time and a reminder the day prior. golfback.com/course/14afc4b9-df6d-4548-9065-a9f0d379ab26/date/2026-09-02 Admittedly, the pricing here is a little higher than some of the other Pocono area courses. Weekday pricing seems to be in the upper 50s, don't ask about weekends as it's not worth it - 100ish, which compared to Pocono Club or a deal on a Golf Now course, is higher, but the conditions here are far nicer. One more thing about the pricing. When checking in today, the guy at the pro shop mentioned that they just aerated the greens yesterday and to "compensate" people for that, they were giving out cards good for a free round that expires at the end of the '27 season. BOGO? Sweet! The conditions overall were great. The threat of rain scared people away big time. While it was drizzling and misting, it was fine. Door to door in a little over three hours with not a care in the world. It's golf the way the Lord intended it to be. As for the aerated greens...some were a little choppy and sandy, but nothing was crazy and on most you couldn't even tell anything had been done. Overall, they were in great shape just like 99% of the course. There is one critique that this course falls short on in comparison to pretty much every other course on planet earth at this point in time. There are no yardage markers/sticks/no GPS in the cart giving you any sense of distance. On some holes it looks like they got out the office label maker and attached at random 241 to a sprinkler head, but that's only on some holes and even on the holes that have it, it's placed so random as to be irrelevant. Fwiw, this is not a course where water comes into the mix. There's a bit of a pond your play over on #10 but unless you duff the hell out of your drive, that's not a factor. The two big factors would be like every other Pocono course are the narrow fairways/trees and damn, does Jack love his sand. It's near everywhere on every hole and in multiple places on most of the holes. Maybe I'm a bit biased with today's BOGO round factor but either way, I've played enough places in this area to know that maybe this course isn't the best of the best, but if not, it's way up there and close. No problem coming back for free or paying. A+ (The below link has a superb set of slides detailing the entire course.) homepage.villanova.edu/joseph.bausch/images/albums/GreatBear/pages/page_1.html?

Played a few days recently while staying at the resort on a family trip…read more The course layout through the hills can be a bit maddening with two par-5's that require layups with long-irons off the tee. It seemed like most of the holes went to left so righties who like to draw the ball and lefties who like to fade it (and don't mind having the ball below their feet) will love this course. Others could get frustrated. They won't put out the markers for the tips to keep play moving (There's a lot of slow play here) so the longest course you can play is about 6100 yards. This will be disappointing for some, especially those excited to try to carry the 220 yard gorge in the signature hole, #14 which requires either a layup right or a second shot that's completely blind over pine trees (no sane guest would ever take that on). Otherwise, one of the par 5's is reachable in 2 and many of the par 4's require an easy poke 200 yards into wide fairways for a wedge into a green. Par 3's were forgettable. The real challenge comes into play close to the hole with fast, undulating greens, most of which have multiple tiers. Play your approach to the wrong area and you're looking at 3 putts. During the week, the course is a steal, particularly if you book on GolfNow or similar app where there are plenty of discounted tee times. As an early riser, I was disappointed that the earliest you could play, even in June, was 7AM. Everyone who works here is extremely friendly. Food in the grill was also quite good. Practice area was also impressive with grass tees and chipping area, but wasn't kept as well as the rest of the facility. The putting green is back toward the clubhouse.
