Barely any sauce. The ribs were decent - definitely not fall off the bone type, but okay tasting. I asked for sweet potato fries, even with an upgrade charge, but alas, the service wasn't the best. So I got the regular fries - which were probably my favorite part of the meal. They were the thinner kind so not the typical "chips" - which I like! The BBQ sauces - 5 choices - I didn't care for any of them. The tangy coleslaw also wasn't a hit with me. $20 or so for the ribs/wings meal & a large Pepsi max.

Luckily I had booked on a Friday night. As we were walked to our table we were informed that there was no jerky or draft beers (same 5 years ago!) Anyway I chose the luxurious salted caramel and choc shake with rum (£8) which was divine and pawed the menu. They had drastically changed this. There are now more veggie and fish choices. Apart from the starters I didn't find the mains that inspiring. Anyway we decided to share some bbq wings for starters and himself had the brisket burn ends for main while I had the pitmaster for £18. The wings arrived in a tasty sauce and were fairly large. When the mains arrived my heart sank. I had to double check mine..it had the ribs..cheese sausage..meaty beans..and another pot of beans but no pulled pork or crackling ..my boyfriend's was dry brisket on soggy bread with greens..the burnt ends were nice. Anyway he left most of his and to be fair they were really understanding and the manager sat down with us to discuss the food. In the end my boyfriends meal was taken off the bill ans mine halved in price.. the way it was handled didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth and would try it again in the far future.

As a rule, any restaurant that you walk into which has kitchen roll on the tables as standard, is…read morelikely to show you a good time. Smokies has two venues, one in Darwen and one in Chorley. As Chorley is nearer to me, we decided to try this one. I like that when you walk in, it already has a warm atmosphere, created by varying lighting, high ceilings, and lots of wood in the decor and furniture. In fact later in the evening, one of the owners would tell me that she loves upcycling, and the wood from the bar came from a Scottish distillery, and the tables throughout were made from old casks from the same distillery, simply sanded and oiled, and that what I thought was a table number on our table was in fact one of the original barrel numbers! I love a bit of provenance! I was surprised to find that the restaurant goes further back into another room, and even has another floor with even more seating for diners! As we entered we were welcomed warmly by who I assume is one of the owners (mentioned above). She checked for our booking and pointed us to our table. Another member of staff brought our menus and explained about the specials menu, and specials on the chalkboards throughout the restaurant. The menu is a vegan's nightmare and a carnivore's wet dream! Delicious meaty starters and mains, a section dedicated to meat from the smoker, and even a couple of sharing platters all described in a way to make your mouth water before you get chance to order. This is a proper southern States style bbq joint, their mantra is "real food, real smoke, real slow", and despite that very much being accurate given their quality offerings, the prices are incredibly decent. We decided on the "couples platter" which was beef brisket, pulled pork, half a rack of ribs, chicken wings, home-made sausage, fries, coleslaw and beans... and it was just £20! In fact including the starter and drinks, the whole bill came to less than £35! CRAZY! So before our platter main, we ordered some nachos as a starter. You know what nachos as a starter tends to look like if you go somewhere like Chiquito etc... about 6 doritos with a blob of melted coagulation-dried cheese and some jalapenos on top. We... weren't expecting what we got from Smokies! We got a huge tray full of nachos, covered in nacho cheese sauce, freshly made guacamole, pineapple salsa, (you also get jalapenos, but we asked for them without) with side pots of guacamole and sour cream. It made me swear when it arrived. They were miles beyond the usual doritos-nachos starter you usually get. They were fresh, with perfect crunch, the salsa was fruity and fresh, the cheese was excellent, and it was incredibly moreish. We found ourselves even mopping up the tiny bits at the end with our fingers... thank god for that kitchen roll and wet wipes! Our main platter arrives just after a side portion of fries each. I ordered plain with pitmaster's salt, and my partner ordered cheeseburger fries from the specials menu, which was the same fries but with bits of burger meat, cheese, and chipotle relish! They came with really lovely fresh coleslaw, and what he says as some of the best beans he's ever had... beans with brisket mixed in! HEAVEN! The fries themselves were hot, crisp, and perfectly seasoned. Absolutely perfect. Then just as they arrived, we were brought out our platter! The owner I mentioned earlier then came over to us and explained to us fully about our platter, what meats were what, how the meats were prepared, down to information about the pink smoke ring on the brisket. It's really nice to see that amount of passion and enthusiasm go into food! This platter was excellent. The sausage was flavourful with a spice which didn't get you at first, but which snuck up behind you and slapped you in the fact afterwards! The chicken wings were so tender that you could suck the meat off the bones. The pulled pork was absolutely perfect, and the brisket was so tender that I swear it literally melted in my mouth. This is the best brisket I've had! Even the pickled cucumber provided was pickled by them in brine using the flavours from the smoker, and was described as a 'palate cleanser' as it was fresh and tangy. Really good! I could imagine it on a burger quite easily! There were also their own blend of sauces on each table comprising of a sweet BBQ sauce, American style mustard, and Louisiana style hot sauce. I imagine they were lovely, but as the meat itself was so amazing as it was provided, I really didn't get chance to try them as they weren't needed! Maybe next time! At the point I was about to try the ribs when the chef/pit-master came into the dining area, and was even introduced to us. When we talked to him about the quality of our meal, his enthusiasm and passion for the real deal of southern BBQ was evident, from how he does it and his smokers, to the difference between competition cooking and regular cooking. It was genuinely fascinating to hear, and as I said, a real

We shared a couple of the starters; the pretzels with dough balls and the brisket hash. Both were very good, preferred the pretzel dish over the brisket. The brisket is in more of a gravy than BBQ sauce, and has a slightly bitter, smokey taste to it. I would prefer a more sweeter sauce, like the pulled pork is in. The chicken wings are tossed in a hot sauce, though you can request BBQ. We tried an array of their meats, our favourite being the pulled pork. I was disappointed in the brisket as it's no longer sliced but pulled now and as stated the sauce needs working on. The platters are huge and best suited for sharing. Their desserts are really good too, and again ideal for sharing. I had the brownie stack which was amazing. We really enjoyed our meal, however it is on the expensive side. Starters and desserts are £7+, mains start from around £13, £20+ for platters. We ended up taking some of our meat to go. They also have a coke freestyle machine so drinks are unlimited!! They have a selection of steaks I'd like to try next time I'm there. Enjoyable meal. Our server was very friendly but service is a little on the slow side.

We shared the Wings and Rings which were supposed to come with some dip but didn't, luckily they were very good and we didn't bother asking for any as we ate them too fast. I chose the Bluegrass Crispy Chicken sandwich, which was the nicest fried chicken I've had in the UK so far. And I am slightly obsessed with fried chicken so that's saying something. The only nitpick there is that there is no reason for this to be a sandwich, the bun adds nothing to the experience and the chicken breast shape makes it awkward. They should just make it a plate and add a biscuit or some mashed potatoes or something instead. It was nice to see they had iced tea on the drinks menu since that is bafflingly rare in the UK, but for some reason the only option had apple juice and mint in it. It was fine, but a bit on the sweet side and not really what I wanted. But that's on me, ultimately. The beer selection is fine but unexceptional. It was a Saturday night and the place was super busy but we did get seated reasonably fast. Service at the table was reasonably good. Service at the bar was nonexistent (bartender was busy but not crazily so, still managed to avoid serving us or making eye contact for ten minutes until we were whisked away to our table). All in all a bit of a mix but solid on the food front, I look forward to trying the rest of the menu.

This establishment markets itself as an American type BBQ eatery, but the food is no where near. The ribs were the worst I've ever had. They were the consistency of jerky with no where near the flavor. They needed to be off the grill about an hour or two sooner, assuming they were cooked here rather than arrived frozen and pre-cooked in the first place. The beef brisket was drowned in sauce so there really wasn't any beef flavor to be found. The pork (as marketed in their logo) was overcooked as well. The fries were good and the beer was cold, which helped in washing it all down. One should/would not expect American quality meat in Europe, but it should be better than this.

The decor is straight out of the opening credits for Fresh Prince of Bell Air - photos of celebrities line the walls and are covered in bright colored tags of fun phrases like "YOLO". There is plenty of seating, perfect for a pair or large groups. I wasn't very hungry, so I ordered the appetizer salad with pulled pork BBQ on top and shared a side of fried pickles. I was a little disappointed in the pulled pork. Being from North Carolina (home of pulled pork BBQ in the states) and eating at a place with smoke in the name, I was expecting smoked BBQ. The pork is just roasted like what you'd expect to come on a bap and lacks the tenderness that comes with slow smoking. The BBQ sauce at the table has a nice smoke flavoring added, so I was able to drown my salad in that for an approximation of the smoky flavor I craved. The salad portion is very generous and uses fresh veg. The fried pickles need a little tempura batter mixed in with the corn meal and maybe a little more time in the fryer for a better texture.

First of all, this restaurant is HUGE. Incredibly big and spacious, with an assortment of booths and tables and a huge bar. The decor of the place is awesome-- fun pieces of americana all over the place and funky graffiti all over the walls. But the highlight of every place is the food, and well, the food was just OK. I opted for a pulled pork sandwich, and a side salad instead of fries. The pork was good (mostly because they have a fantastic BBQ sauce) but definitely didn't taste slow-cooked. The salad was served without any dressing which was a bit weird, since it was huge and mostly lettuce. By the way, portions here- GIGANTIC. Come with an empty stomach! Neat selection of American beers. I don't know. I wasn't incredibly impressed, but my meal was satisfying, and the BBQ sauce is tasty. I'll have to try a few more things on the menu...

I'm so impressed. I polished off the edamame, simple but yum, wasn't a huge fan of the weird seaweed garden salad thing - it had a creamy sauce on it and a bunch of other things that weren't seaweed. I didn't realize it's like, literally a garden salad you'd get as a side, with seaweed on it plus some creamy sauce. I picked all the seaweed out to nom on, and the fresh avocado, didn't want the rest. On to the next on on to the next... Korean Bibimbap Seafood Udon. YUM. Big fat slurpable noodles - check. Tangy kimchi - check. Mixed seafood including mussels, prawns, fish cake - check. Aforementioned perfect fried egg dotted with seaweed - check. Veggies like carrots, courgette, mushrooms - check. Meal in a bowl! Filling, wonderful, and I have to say slurpable again because it was the slurpablest ever. Aside from the kimchi, the broth tasted like nice broth, but not like "omg this is so Korean and unusual," and it wasn't super spicy, however it was an incredibly well-assembled dish, everything fresh and perfectly texture. Totally addicting, I kept eating it even after I was full because I would leave no noodle untouched. Can't speak for what the restaurant is like, but delivery was super fast on a Tuesday night, and I can't even believe how hot and fresh the food arrived. This udon soup is the perfect cure for a rainy winter night, you should go get some right now.

We walk by BBQ Village ALL THE TIME when exiting New Street toward South Side and finally made up our minds to give it a go. I'm so glad we did. The restaurant is decorated so nicely. The outside doesn't give a proper impression of just how pretty the restaurant is inside, with beautiful wallpaper, pottery koi, and beautiful paintings on the walls. We were seated at a hotpot table, which has a steam plate in the middle for sharing a big bowl of hotpot and heating pads at each seat for keeping your hotpot warm once served out. Next time, I am ordering hotpot because that seems to be the specialty of BBQ Village. I ordered Sichuan chicken and dim sum soup with chicken broth. The Sichuan sauce was properly spicy. SO good! It was practically swimming in chilis, but also balanced with vegetable oil and vinegar - just the way I like it. The soup was so flavorsome. I could swim in it. The seasoning was absolutely perfect. This will be a soup I crave and would imagine it would be the perfect remedy to a cold. I highly recommend the green tea, which is accented with the perfect floral notes. No sugar is needed for such a delicious tea. We shared a pot and it held plenty of tea to drink all throughout our meal. My goal for the next visit is to ask for the Mandarin menu, which in reading the Birmingham Mail, I understand has more menu items.
