Very much the place to grocery shop in Mid-America. Hands-down Hy-Vee is just perfect. I arrived at…read moretheir Lake Ozark store emotionally armored, oat-milk expectations calibrated to cities of 10 Million+. And yet, dear reader, I was humbled. First of all, this is not a grocery store; it's a lifestyle concept. The aisles are wide enough to fit my senses and a cart, the produce is shockingly photogenic, and the wine selection was trying to knock on greatness' door. I enjoyed a bottle of Bonanza Vinekeeper for the first time. Sidenote: I once taste-tested regular Bonanza beside Caymus and preferred the lesser bottle, it is now an easy go-to. The Vinekeeper was structured well but I couldn't denote a gulf between it and basic Bonanza. Anyway, back to Hy-Vee... everyone is resoundingly pleasant. Like, eye contact, smiling, "let me know if you need anything" pleasant. At first it was alarming, but then I leaned into it and accepted help finding artisanal cheese (okay, it was just Grana) I absolutely did not expect to exist in Lake Ozark. And yet there it was. Thriving. The beef cuts were a step above as well. My girlfriend was impressed with the cutesy spa section up front. Bath salts, body butter, a nice bubbling water tower sink to sample products and wash your hands in front of all the other customers. Nice. The store is clean, organized, and somehow manages to feel both efficient and indulgent. It beats pretty much just about all mainstream grocers in land-locked America. Safeway, I'm thinking of you. I came in for one thing and left with seventeen, including snacks I will now pretend I "discovered" while traveling. In conclusion: Hy-Vee Lake Ozark has no business being this good. Five stars for defying all expectations, gently, lovingly, and with excellent lighting. Also: I really loved Natasha at the front. She's a boss.

I asked the employee watching the checkouts, she was right next to the one I used, if scanning the same item multiple times was okay for multiple purchases. She told me that was fine. I could scan the same package of butter 4 times for 4 packages. I did so. I also did the same thing with a bottle of lemon lime soda. Scanned the same bottle 6 times for 6 bottles. I noticed this lunatic employee was standing off to the side of me, watching what I did. I thought nothing of it. I got to a bucket of lard I was purchasing and was preparing to scan it when BOOM! This lanky, rude kid pushes me aside and says, "Attempted fraud! We have to check this out!" Pathetic, ignorant, rude wretch proceeds to start punching keys, pushes me out of the way and then says, "It all checks out." I was infuriated beyond words!!! He grabs the bucket of lard, scans it, puts it down and says, "You're okay, we're done." I lost it. I said, "Junior, I da%n well don't need YOU to check out my items in self checkout! What the ***((( do you think I'm trying to do?!! STEAL A BUCKET OF LARD?!!!!!!" I hate this WalMart!!! I've observed them pulling similar stunts before on other folks.
