The hostel is comprised of 4 different cottages- male only, female only, and co-ed. The buildings are adorable, each has ~6 beds, a reasonable bathroom, and nice windows (with screens). There is a shared kitchen that is small but functional, a picnic area and grills that are available for use. I stayed in a co-ed cabin for a couple nights with a some friends. We took the ferry to P-town in order to roll onto our bikes early in the morning and pedal all day. When we rolled back into the hostel-zone, we found tea/cocoa on the stove in kitchen, some obligatory guitar playing, and all of our stuff where we had left it. For the minimal cost and killer location, it's hard / impossible to say no. I'd go back!

It was 2pm checking time so the young woman assigned me another room which she said was a Harbor view room. That room turned out to be even worse. A view of a pool fence a small glimpse of a harbor view. The room had no screen in the bathroom window which allowed pests to fly into the room and dead bugs in the tub. The toilet area so small you have to remove the toilet paper roll from the wall holder to sit on the seat. The closet doors were broken and couldn't close. The room was generally clean but my plan on staying a extra night there was out of the question.

Upon checkout, we told the front desk receptionist that we were looking forward to our return trip. In response, he presented us with a $30 coupon to be redeemed at check-in in 2026. In August 2026, we returned to AWOL. After experiencing questionable billing practices upon checkout and exceptionally poor customer service in response to those billing practices, we will NEVER return! We booked our return trip to AWOL in January 2026 and paid 50% of the outstanding balance for our stay. Upon arrival in August, husband paid the remaining 50% balance and redeemed the $30 off coupon that we received the previous summer. At the conclusion of our stay, my husband went to the office to return our room key. In front of other guests, the front desk receptionist told him that his credit card had been declined and that he owed an additional $754 for our stay. Embarrassed by this exchange, my husband paid the disputed balance allegedly due and owing and we left. Once we arrived home, my husband confirmed that our balance had been paid in full upon our arrival and that he had been overcharged by $754. When he contacted AWOL to reverse the charge, he received a response that our bill was "fully settled" and that there was no additional charge for $754. When my husband's credit card statement finally arrived, he confirmed that he had, in fact, been overcharged by $754. To make matters even worse, AWOL reversed the $30 coupon and added a $30 charge to my husband's card! My husband emailed the credit card statement to AWOL and received no response. Ultimately, my husband was forced to initiate a payment dispute with his credit card company. The $754 overcharge and $30 coupon reversal were addressed. However, on my husband's most recent credit card statement, he noticed that AWOL has re-charged him for the $30 coupon reversal. Unbelievable! Not sure if this is AWOL being petty or another billing snafu. Needless to say, we will be spending our money elsewhere in 2027.

I make last minute decisions regularly, including hotel reservations. Classically the first time I really looked into making reservations was August 7th, for the weekend of August 10th. As it turns out, if you're trying to stay in CC in the literal prime of summer on the weekend every last place (essentially) is going to be booked up unless you have your shit together and figure it out in advance. Your last option is to stay in a complete dump for about $400 a night. Anyways, Moffett House Inn was for some reason available for a somewhat reasonable price 3 days in advance. There would have to be gold rimmed toilet seats with automatic wiping for me to shell out the kind of cash I mentioned above. Without much research, but not much expectation, we arrived to MHI. We had trouble finding it actually as it is in a corridor off the main street. There is no parking but a few lots around. The place itself is in a really great location, probably 2 min walk from that main street and all of the good shit in ptown. It's probably another 5 min to the beach from the street. Our room was on top of an extremely narrow and steep staircase that scared the shit out of me (stairs scare me in general for some reason, maybe related to heights). Good luck traversing that shit in a drunken stupor. We shared the floor (and unfortunately the bathroom) with 3 other rooms. There wasn't much of an issue showering when we wanted to and nobody took a stinky doody thankfully. The staff were nice and available when we arrived to take us to the room. Overall this is a good option if you're strapped for cash and want a central location. I might be a bit bougie next time if surrounding hotel availability permits.
