Hi Do is a much needed local bakery in an area where local bakeries are lacking... on the Westbank. Don't go in here expecting to find cupcakes and petit fours. Croissants are the star of the show in this little gem located in the heart of Terrytown. You can get them stuffed with fruit or cream cheese (my favorite). They are made fresh, are absolutely delicious and at $2, the price can't be beat. They also have bear claws and turnovers. Another thing that is unique about Hi Do is the fact that you can order one of their specialty king cakes all year long, even during the "off" season. That could make a great treat if you need something to hold you over until parade season comes around again. My only complaint: they are cash and check only. No credit cards accepted. Every time during Mardi Gras season, I always crave for king cake, and the best place to satisfy that craving is here. There king cakes aren't over sweeten like many, many other king cakes. So if you're big fan of pounds and pounds of sugar on your king cake, this place is not for you. Hi-Do Bakery is a Westbank gem. Greatly known for their amazing king cakes, don't overlook their showcase of pastries and sweets! The king cakes are clearly self explanatory as most reviews will tell you their unique fillings are pretty exquisite! What makes Hi-Do king cakes so unique though, is the different shapes! There's the King Crown, Crawfish, Crab and my personal favorite, the Fleur De Lis. I do recommend calling ahead for these special shape/fillings orders. Now, onto more important things. The Croissants!! For the price ($2.29), you can't beat a better breakfast that's both savory and fulfilling. My sister and I routinely come into Hi-Do for our ham and cheese croissant fix in the morning on our way to work. The sweet ladies working in the front always heat them up for us if they're not fresh out of the oven. We come too often that they know we like it warm and fresh. I love that. To top it off, we both get one oatmeal raisin cookie that is so generous in size! Check the picture I posted for proof! Though I normally take off a star for places that accept cash only, Hi-Do actually has an ATM inside for the convenience of those who tend to forget that. Since Hi-Do is a place that does accept cash, I normally don't ask for change. They don't take tips, but do accept donations for help those in need. Double thumbs up! It's sad when it takes living in another state to appreciate little gems like this. Somehow in the land of FB, I saw an article posted about the history of how Hi-Do came to be and it sparked my interest. Not to mention, it made me a bit teary (Google From Vietnam to New Orleans, Hi-Do). Anyways I made sure to bookmark for our trip home and we made sure that our last stop before departing the City was here. It's the most humble little spot off Terry Parkway in Terrytown. Everything is made fresh every day and prices are low. That has much to do with the fact that they take cash only. Funny thing is that it hasn't stopped the steady stream of customers that stopped by while we were there. They have a very loyal following and rightly so. The sweet woman who owns the shop helped us with our order and we even met her husband and their granddaughter. It's a family affair here! We decided to go with a ham and cheese croissant (my husband's fave of the 4), cinnamon roll, almond croissant and an apple turnover. The almond croissant was flaky and butter and definitely fresh. Soo good! The cinnamon roll was massive and messy (when driving) but I would only skip next time because of the raisins. lol. They are well known for their king cakes but that's for another time! Also, they have a little self serve coffee station with PJ's coffee but nothing fancy here. Just powdered creamer and sugar packets. And of course, a cooler with cold drinks. If you're a bargain hunter, check out the wire shelf of discounted bread, pastries, etc. The stale bread would be awesome if you're an expert at making bread pudding. Phenomenal cream cheese king cake. I got it fresh when it was coming out of the oven, and it was divine. So far my favorite king cake that I've had. THEY ARE CASH ONLY. They do have an ATM but why pay that fee if you can avoid it. Also, the parking lot is not the big so consolidate cars and carpool, and save yourself the headache of finding parking. I was able to find a spot right away but why take the chance that you might not be able to. They can also make king cakes in different shapes for a slightly more expensive price. We drive from Houston every year and grab us a cream cheese King Cake (or two ). Of course the traditional New Orleans King Cakes are good but I'm not not a fan of the frosting (it's too sweet) and overdose on cinnamon. That's just me, though. I like a place with a story. This one is of hardship overcome and the American Dream fulfilled. I read that the owner gives a lot to the local Catholic church, so I didn't mind spending money here...though I'm told that the prices are quite reasonable. I tried the King Cake, and though I know nothing about it, our group of 8 really enjoyed the cream cheese filled one, which is the most popular. Bready exterior was sweet and moist and the filling was not too sweet. They come in small, medium, and large. The medium was enough for our group. $22. Other flavors included cream cheese, bavarian cream, blueberry, strawberry, and various combinations of those. We also tried the ham and cheese croissant (too salty), almond croissant (nothing special) and the chocolate (too much chocolate topping). The bread just was not flaky. Skip the croissant, go for the king cake. As far as I know, this place is one of the few bakeries to make king cake in December. A lot of Yelpers have mentioned their cream cheese king cake but I especially love Hi Do's Bavarian cream king cake, which not a lot of other places offer. In my opinion, they have the freshest, softest king cake in the city. Service is very fast and super friendly. I normally call a few hours ahead to place an order even though they usually have all kinds of king cakes in stock during carnival season. Loved this bakery when we lived in Gretna and just popped in on a return visit to the area--it's gotten bigger and better! Amazing French bread; super flaky croissants--try the chocolate now with a drizzle of white chocolate on top, and they seemed bigger than I remember. Adore this little Vietnamese bakery, and am very glad to have been introduced to it, since it's hidden not only in a strip mall but is also located on the westbank. My knowledge of their baked goods is somewhat limited, due to the fact that I always get the same few things when I'm there -- specifically, croissants, the cream cheese ones are unfreakingbelieveable -- and thus can't speak to how good their bread is, for example. However, my native New Orleanian ex-boyfriend swears they have THE best King Cakes in the city. I've had them, they're great, but since I've only lived here 10 years (And didn't even try king cake for the first 6. No, I do not know WTF was wrong with me.) I hesitate to weigh in on the best king cake debate. However, they DO have king cakes shaped like crawfish and lobsters and stuff, which I've always wanted to get, but they're kind of expensive. Around $30 maybe? Ordinarily, I would give a place 4 stars for being cash only (and on the Westbank, no less!) but once when I happened to be across the river and remembered to stop by Hi-Do, I bought a bunch of stuff and forgot they were cash only. The total was $12 something and I only had about $10. The lady behind the counter totally gave me the whole box anyway, which I thought was a particularly kind gesture. Frankly, I don't care if penguins and squirrels are making this stuff as long as it keeps tasting so darn delicious. I start most of my mornings like a lot of surgeons, eaaaaaaarly morning hospital rounds. I work on the Westbank sometimes and I've eaten Hi-Do's products many times while I've only stopped in the actual store a few times. The location in a strip mall really doesn't inspire confidence that you will be experiencing anything special. On entry you will quickly surmise that this is a Vietnamese bakery that offers a selection of pastries, breads, cookies, cakes and other treats. This bakery is well known in the area for their king cakes which have a different texture than most others and they will produce them in non-traditional shapes like crawfish and fleur de lis. They also make some good French bread that many restaurants use for their po boys. Its a really big hassle that they're cash or check only and they could really use a website to make ordering easier. If your on the West Bank this will be one of your few bakery options and worthy of a visit. read more

I'm just going to say it, and I realize these may indeed be fighting words, Hi-Do has The Best Kingcakes! They are similar to McKenzie's kingcakes, the closest I've ever found at least. Friday morning, at 7am on the dot, when the doors open, already I am the eighth person in line. The best kept secret on the Westbank is not a secret at all it seems. My kingcake was so fresh that it was still warm. French bread with a hint of cinnamon and just purple, green, and gold sugar on top. The croissants are awesome too! Pick up a couple. Might as well as grab some small French breads while you're there, gives you an excuse to whip up some gumbo or red beans when you get home. This bakery is cash only. Even if you can't make it there for the kingcakes, it is worth going out of your way for some baked goods any other time. Bet you could special order a kingcake too, even if it's no longer Carnival time! read more

I adore this little bakery... you'd never know they were something special just looking at the location in a little strip mall on Terry Parkway, but mmm.... inside there are loaves of yummy French bread and wonderful croissants. The chocolate croissant is a wonderful indulgence and the ham and cheese croissants are delish as a quick breakfast or mid-day snack. But the best thing here is the king cakes... they are seriously amazing. Unlike the cinnamon-rolls-passed-off-as-king-cakes that you find elsewhere, these are more like the old-style brioche king cakes (similar to McKenzies, but -dare I say it- even better, especially when fresh and warm)...not overloaded with cinnamon or that icky white icing that other places insist on putting on top. Croissants... so good! I think I have tried them all now, except for the cream cheese because I'm not a fan of anything baked with cream cheese. The chocolate is divine, if you like a LOT of chocolate. I usually opt for plain or ham and cheese. On the most recent visit, the kind lady behind the counter gave my kid a free cookie, too :) I'll admit, I ate a bite or two.
