Went here with the boy on a Saturday night before a gig. Got there at 8pm thinking we had ample time to eat before the show at 9:30.
Service was slow from the get go, only two people working the bar (which is where you have to order food from). The chick behind the bar was super apologetic though after we waited 15 mins.
We ordered the karage to share, I had a hankering for the beef and greens stir fry, and boyfriend ordered the salad. The karage took an age to come out, and when it did it was dry and rubbery. Portion size was fine, but the pieces were all different sizes which was odd. Some were tiny, others we had to break up just to fit them in our mouth. Maybe it's just me but I value consistency of product and would sort of expect stuff to be a uniform size (or maybe that's just my inner neurotic hospo training kicking in).
My main came out first. It was pretty average. The greens were tasty, but the beef was chewy and cut way too thick. It wasn't stir fried, tasted more like it had been boiled in the sauce for a while instead of being quickly fried as you'd expect a stir fry to be.
The waiter came over and apologized for the wait on my partner's salad, assuring us it was being plated up as we spoke. Maybe ten minutes later it finally came out. No complaints about the salad, it was tasty. I guess it was just a shame that we weren't able to eat our meals together.
The waiter shouted us both a free drink for being patient with them because apparently other customers had been rude and complaining about the wait time. In all honesty, the service was pretty good, it seemed like both the bar staff and the waiter guy were in total damage control when it came to the clearly overwhelmed kitchen.
It wasn't a busy night so I kind of stuggle to understand why the kitchen was so backed up, but whatever. We ended up having to scarf our food down at 9pm in order to make it to the gig on time. Kind of disappointing all round really. We could have just grabbed some food from China town mall for less money, wasted less time, and actually been satisfied with the food we ate.
Definitely won't eat at Heya again. I feel like the quality just isn't there. Having said that, the bar and wait staff are awesome. Would totally recommend this place for a couple of drinks (and maybe pool and pinball too!) but deffo skip the food. read more
