We enjoyed the other flavors at our tasting, and never thought we'd do a carrot cake wedding cake, but... after tasting theirs, we had no choice, it was so incredible. And I know my carrot cake! We had so many compliments at the wedding and actually ran out... It was also incredibly beautiful, but that didn't last for long once people started tasting their cake and word spread how great it was!! They also decorated personalized cookies that we requested with perfect renditions of my daughter's two bunnies and my son in law's love for fishing... Overall my experience with Stevi was great. I tried getting my cake made by Stevi in July 2013 but booking her one month in advance is out of the question. Learning from my mistake, I gave Stevi a $50 deposit in Oct 2013 to guarantee my birthday cake for July 2014. Leading up to my birthday it was a bit difficult getting in contact with Stevi. She explained the summer months are busy with weddings. On June 25, 2014, Stevi called me to discuss design, colors, and flavors. I received a mock-up of how the cake would look and an invoice from Stevi on June 30, 2014. Once Stevi sent the mock-up, correspondences were responded to quickly and promptly. I would recommend having a very clear idea of how you want your cake to look as early as possible. The time between my first consultation call with Stevi (6/25) and my birthday (7/5), was only 10 days. There wasn't much time to change my mind on design or flavors. The cake itself was delicious! Very soft and moist which was surprising. To be honest, I only expected the cake to look good. The frosting was flavorful and rich but light at the same time. The layers of my cake were carrot, cinnamon bun (Stevi discontinued this flavor but fulfilled my request anyway) and banana walnut. I do not recommend banana walnut and carrot was my favorite. My only small complaint was there were a few places where you could see flaws in the cake decorations. These imperfections were only visible up close however, do not expect absolute perfection. After all, it is a cake. Lastly, I wasn't given a cake tasting. To be fair to Stevi, I didn't ask for one either. Had I completed a tasting I would have known I wasn't a fan of the banana walnut cake (which ended up being the bottom tier of the cake). Holy amazing cupcakes, Batman! My daughter's first birthday party will probably go down in history among our friends and family as "the one with the amazing cupcakes." From the moment I contacted Stevi at Hey There, Cupcake! with my idea for a Dia de los Muertos birthday fiesta for my little girl, I knew this would be an epic cupcake event. I told her to run with the theme and that I trusted her expertise. Stevi recommended we have 150 mini cupcakes rather than the full size cupcakes, because the minis are about two bites each and therefore guests could try more than one flavor if they wanted. She emailed and called a few times in the weeks before the party to ensure the flavors, colors and her general design ideas were on track with mine, then she teased me with a texted photo the night before the party with a tiny glimpse of the edge of the main cake that she called a "preview" -- I almost passed out because it was INCREDIBLE! She decided on bright Dia de los Muertos colors and three classic flavor combinations: red velvet with cream cheese frosting, chocolate with white chocolate buttercream and vanilla with fresh raspberry buttercream. My simple palate was beyond pleased with her choices... they were not too fancy, but clearly not "grocery store bakery combinations," either! The day of the party, Stevi arrived right on time and displayed her work without any direction from me. She had her own unique cake stands (including a riser that I thought worked really well on the banquet table) and I have to say, 150 mini cupcakes and one baby's first birthday smash cake have never looked so good! Each mini cupcake had a handmade (delicious!) fondant flower or disc with a "1" on it, or a fresh raspberry or swirl of sprinkles. They were breathtaking! And the smash cake? A to-scale sized sugar skull made of vanilla cake covered in fondant and hand painted and decorated with literally hundreds of tiny details -- the photos do not do it justice! It was an absolute work of art. Every guest at the party was wowed by the cupcake display and kids were begging for a mini cupcake from the moment they walked in. We said, "sure" and before we knew it, half of the table had been cleared by kids and adults licking frosting off their fingers and smiling. We had about fifty guests and not a single cupcake was left over... I would say that speaks for itself. They were SO GOOD! I have had Stevi's cupcakes several times at different events, but this one was just about the best thing ever in my book. The cake was the part I was most looking forward to while planning, and Stevi did not dissapoint! The first draft of the design that Stevi sent blew me away! I could not believe how well she captured what we had discussed at the tasting. I loved it so much, did not want to change a thing! When I saw the cake the day of, O.M.G. it was one of the most stunning things I had ever seen! We did a small 2 tier cutting cake and 75 mini cupcakes. The topper she created was made from sugar...SUGAR! And it looked like real flowers and branches. We went with the Faire Food option for the cutting cake. I wish I had more than one piece at my wedding. We are already planning to order a small cake or batch of cupcakes for our 1 year anniversary. Stevi told us at the tasting that this cake option is not the most popular (probably because it has no chocolate). I knew as soon as I read the description I was going to LOVE this cake. I am getting married later this year. We scheduled a tasting about a month ago, and paid promptly for it online. It was canceled the day of, apparently due to a power outage. Then we didn't hear from this place for weeks. Finally we rescheduled. Then again the day of our tasting, we were told the lady is out of the country the day of our wedding... Are you kidding? Why wasn't this confirmed beforehand?? You would think a professional would check the schedule before asking us to schlep up to Escondido from central San Diego during rush hour. They did refund our tasting fee promptly, though, which I appreciated. Whomever we ultimately choose should treat us with as much care as their cake. read more

The spread that Stevi helped me and my wedding planners at Amorology create for my big day was outrageously good. From someone who detests sweets, I went into our cupcake consultation as a side-car to my (now) husband, thinking that I would nibble a crumb or two. After one good whiff of the cupcakes sitting in front of me, I just had to try. We had coconut cake with coconut buttercream, almond cake with almond buttercream, and chocolate cake with salted carmel buttercream. I have literally never been so obsessed with a dessert in my life - I actually crave Stevi's cupcakes now! These treats are very light and aren't like those store-bought, ultra-sugary, pasty frostings/cakes. The flavors are just the right kind of intense, and they have the absolute best aroma. Stevi created three kinds of cupcakes, a two-tier cake, and a faux three-tier cake for our dessert table, all with the coolest designs. She literally used the PDF files of the patterns on our invitations to wrap our cake with edible matching patterns - chevron, ikat, and gold buffalos! We used tumbleweeds as a running theme throughout our reception decor, and Stevi created spun sugar tumbleweeds for the salted carmel and chocolate cupcakes. I love Stevi's attention to detail and creativity. The cakes are so delicious, my guests raved about them and they are even yummy the next day. Ordered 2 dozen customized cupcakes for a 25th birthday. I sent Stevi some day of the dead images and asked her to incorporate them into the cupcakes...and she did these awesome hand painted skulls (literally sugar skulls!) on some of the cupcakes, and decorated the rest beautifully. The faire food flavor was definitely my favorite, the chunks of apple were soooo yummy! The black and tan was also a really good flavor. My least favorite was the vanilla bean, it was just too plain for my taste, but a lot of other people liked the simpleness of this flavor. The only thing I would suggest if you live in southern San Diego is to go with the delivery option. I figured I would save a little money by picking up the cupcakes myself, but the bakery is definitely farrrrrrr up in Escondido. read more

Where do I begin? I imagine if I had the chance to take a peek inside Stevi's bakery it would be similar to that scene in Sleeping Beauty where the fairy godmothers keep changing the color's of the princess' dress as she's dancing with the prince - just magic wands and pixie dust flying around everywhere, only this time it's Stevi and her team with their magical whisks because yes, her cakes are THAT magical. I know what you're thinking, "now but do they taste as good as they look?" -- my answer HELL yes. Before we met with Stevi I remember looking through the pictures on her website and thinking to myself "wow, no two cakes look alike, how the heck does she do it". And then we met with her and I understood why. Stevi is a kind and gentle soul who's extremely modest about her talent. When you sit and talk with her there's a sincerity to her, she really wants you to enjoy what she's creating for you and wants to be sure your cake is everything you could possibly imagine and more. Rather than ask for a couple pics of things you've seen online, Stevi wants to learn about you and your general likes and dislikes. She considers patterns and different color palettes that you'd never even think of when you're dreaming up your cake (uh hello, like the magic she works with black fondant - and don't even get me started about how great her fondant tastes, there's no scraping this stuff off). And her flowers..........swoon......people gawked at our cake and were trying to figure out if her magical paper wafer flowers were real or fake. I don't know she does it, oh wait yes I do she has magic in her fingers tips. Business wise Stevi is very responsive, understanding, and goes above and beyond when working with you to get that unique design. Our family is still talking about our cake. It had the magic to pull them off the dance floor to eat it - and if you've been to weddings you know that's no small feat. She kept emailing me (via phone would have been much easier than a million emails back and forth) asking to reschedule. I finally gave up on the tasting and went with Sumi's Oven. My husband hates cake. Really hates cake. So, for our wedding this past July we decided to do lots and lots of brownies for our guests. Our wedding coordinator suggested we do a tasting at Hey There Cupcake and we are so glad that we did. The brownies Stevi made for the tasting were spectacular and they were as wonderful on the day of our wedding. She made three different types of brownies for us: peppermint patty, dark chocolate fudge, and salted caramel. Holy mother. They were the best brownies we've ever had and we were so proud to share them with our guests! The guests were dying from chocolate happiness. Stevi also crafted a mini cake made out of even more brownies for us to cut and decorated it with a beautiful sugar succulent that looked real. Their cupcakes made our wedding very special. They were beautiful and tasted amazing. They were just sweet enough and not overly sweet like most cupcakes. They made a beautiful and delicious cutting cake that was actually pretty big. We saved half for our 1 year and the rest was snacked on through the night even after all the cupcakes were sucked up by the guests. They also provided carrying boxes for the guests to take leftovers home.
