Hey Kitchen - Special Teppan Pepper Pasta with Smoked Chicken in Cream Sauce
    Mike H.

Hey Kitchen, glad to find you in Ottawa Chinatown! This restaurant offers a happy medium between hot plates, noodles & omurice. It's more interesting than typical Chinese food fare without venturing too far from the cuisine. Chicken Cutlet Omurice with Spicy Curry Sauce came was topped by a heap of fried chicken cutlet strips in Asian seasoning. The soft omurice was wrapped in a thin layer of fried egg. The strong curry sauce was spicy as advertised, which made for a nice complement to the light egg & rice combination. Special Teppan Pepper Pasta was on the menu with a wide variety of options. We ordered it with Smoked Chicken in a Cream Sauce similar to carbonara. Chicken pieces with skin were tender & flavourful in the heavy sauce. A side of okra in garlic & vinegar sauce was a helpful contrast for this hot plate pasta. Hey Kitchen is conveniently close to the Chinatown gate along Somerset St. It was surprisingly empty for weekend dining. Staff knew we had come from away, but were helpful & friendly which made us feel quite at home.

Wandered into Ottowa Chinatown cuz the tourist in me has to visit every Chinatown in every city I'm in that has one. Admittedly Chinatown looked a bit empty for a Sunday evening but we wandered around anyways. Yelped and found this place cuz I wanted to try the omurice since I remembered it vaguely on a youtube food clip, but I should have reviewed the clip before ordering cuz it was nothing like the clip! The youtube omurice is like a soft wet omelette that when you slice, covers up the rice beautifully. Oh well! My bad! Basically we ordered an omelette rice with chicken katsu on top. I'd give it a 3/5. We also ordered the beef tongue black pepper sauce with spaghetti on a sizzling plate. The beef tongue was a bit chewy and gamey. It would have been better if they boiled it to soften the tongue and then add it to the plat. The presentation with the wrapper around skillet was a nice touch so you don't have to hold a napkin up to your chest and worry about getting splatters. I'd give it a 3.5/4. Lastly we had the pork belly with noodle. The pork belly was melt in your mouth deliciousness and the recommended noodle soaked up the broth nicely. The broth was also deep in flavor and wasn't greasy. You even get more free noodles if you want after you finish your noodles! Not more broth but noodles. This I would give a 4/5. So why the 4 overall? Our waitperson Julianna was a star! She was attentive, gave recommendations, and also gave us tips on where to go in Ottowa. She was a bright star to begin our trip. If I lived in the area I would come back for the noodles and the sizzling plate. Yum yum!

I had lunch at Hey Kitchen and overall it was good. I got the Chicken Cutlet Omurice ($12.99). It's essentially a thin omelette wrapped around mushroom rice, topped with breaded and deep fried boneless chicken (dark meat) with some curry sauce poured over. It was actually very tasty. The omelette was smooth, silky and really thin. I don't know how they did it so it didn't fall apart. The rice was well seasoned and a good texture. Slightly sticky but not mushy. The curry sauce was described as spicy, but it wasn't spicy, maybe like a 3/10 spicy, IMO. However, it was flavourful and I enjoyed it. The chicken was crispy and tasted good, but I would have preferred leaner breast meat. They sprinkled some corn kernels on top, which I did not eat. Service was good. As soon as I walked in I was greeted and advised to sit anywhere. I was immediately given either really weak hot tea or it might have been just plain hot water, I'm not really sure which it was, lol. I did ask for some cold water later in my meal and they brought me a carafe of lemon water (it wasn't that cold, but still acceptable). When you're done, you pay at the cash register. Hey Kitchen is where The Owl of Minerva used to be (which I never visited). Before that it was Honey Town, which I did visit. The layout is similar to when it was Honey Town, but the decor is much less "50's diner meets 80's subway car." They still have some of the red padded benches, but the chrome bar stools are gone, replaced by white plastic chairs. Lots of new spots opening up in Chinatown, and this one serves up some different food from other restaurants nearby, so worth a try if you're looking for something different. Street parking only.

I had dinner at Hey Kitchen and it was not bad at all. You get a mixture of Taiwanese, Japanese, and Chinese food to choose from. For the omurice, the price and portions are reasonable. The steak was tasty and not over cooked! For the soup noodle dishes, I would stay away from the fatty pork belly version because it was all fat! They offer unlimited noodle refills.

Great food, came out fast. Loved the omurice. Its simple, but the egg, rice, and mushrooms are so good, buttery and flavor filled. The noodle soup was great. Wish I had a place like this near where I live back home. Price was great for the amount of food you get. Definitely will come here again next time I am in town visiting family.

So excited for an asian cafe to open up in Ottawa! I miss the food in Markham and this was the perfect fix. I came in around 3PM on Saturday and the restaurant was half full even though it was an odd time. We got the takoyaki and omurice. The takoyaki was good but not amazing. I think the texture was a little different from a real takoyaki (it was more dense and looked deep fried) but it was still tasty. The chicken katsu curry omurice was so yummy. The chicken was nice and crispy, the Japanese curry was flavourful, and the egg and rice were well seasoned. They don't just put white rice inside the egg, but instead rice with mushrooms and black pepper. That really added to the flavour so it wasn't too bland even though there was a lot of rice! However, I wouldn't say this is a real omurice.. not the kinds that cut open into raw-ish egg. Nonetheless, it was yummy and satisfied my cravings. I was a little disappointed that the menu wasn't really Hong Kong cafe food (like the baked saucy rice dishes) but it was still nice. The menu is primarily noodles (similar to like deer garden in markham where you chose the broth, meats, veg, and noodles), teppan (hot plates with meat, rice and veggies) and omurice. Definitely things I usually eat in Markham. I will be back to try the other dishes for sure!

Honestly a really cute, really tasty restaurant. We enjoyed our meal, especially the omurice. Would recommend!

    Eel with fettuccini

My wife and I were visiting the Dominican University College in Chinatown part of the doors open ottawa, then decided to have lunch at Hey Kitchen on Somerset W. I think the food was ok not sure it is Japanese or Korean but definitely not Chinese. But they use fettuccini so I am really confused. Anyway the taste of the food is not bad and the eel was nicely grilled. The price of the food is reasonable so for anyone have never tried b4, should give it a try.

If anyone's reading this and hasn't tried cafe orient before, what are you doing? I'll try to be as…read moreunbiased as possible since this has been my og go-to place with my family + the previous owner has basically watched me grow up at this point. But truly, the food here tastes as authentic as it can get in Ottawa and very comparable to the AMAZING food you'd find in Toronto/markham. It brings memories back from HK cha cha tengs (ifykyk). We usually come for lunch, but the photo attached is from their set dinner menu. If you come for lunch our go-to is usually the baked porkchop rice (classic), wonton soup, satay beef noodles, hot and sour soup, pad thai, and ofc their milk tea. The previous owner still works here from time-to-time helping out and the new owner that took over is also just as great. Just make sure to plan your trip here accordingly, as during rush hours, you may need to wait for an open table - but so worth it.

Round 2. Another quick meal at Cafe Orient. This time for breakfast!…read more Preserved duck egg and shredded pork congee - Congee was flavoured well and had a watery thick consistency. Lots of duck eggs in the congee, but lacked shredded pork. Decent size, can get to share for 2 people. Would get the congee again, but with other toppings. Steamed sticky rice in lotus leaf - Undercooked, rice was not soft. filling was bland and lacked texture. Would not recommend. Seems like this place is a hit or miss with their items.
