Last Friday my son and I were invited for a birthday party. Upon arrival, our group was seated, and we began settling in for the celebration. Shortly afterward, the host approached us and informed us that we would need to leave. While her tone was apologetic, she repeatedly stated, "you have to leave,". The host explained that the restaurant was overbooked due to a paid event and stated that because those guests "pay more," they were given preference. As a result, our party--including children gathered for a birthday celebration--was asked to leave the restaurant entirely. I was appalled by the lack of professionalism and customer care shown in this situation. Asking a family to leave after seating them--especially for a child's birthday. She didn't offer any alternative options besides to leave and come back a different date. What a nice way to ruin a birthday party. At the end after we told her we were not happy she said she spoke with manager and I could stay. What I don't understand is - why wait until we were seated to tell us to leave? Had a dual birthday celebration with a group of friends, and we had a great time at Hex & Co. We had a prepaid reservation ($15 per person) for our larger group, which made it easy to get started right away. The space was bright, and the walls were lined with a plethora of games. We selected Betrayal: House on the Hill, which was a fun team-based game set in a haunted mansion, perfect for the upcoming spooky season. Food and drinks (alc, mocktails, soft drinks, and coffee) can be ordered and paid for at the front. It's a pretty basic menu but decent enough if you want a shareable snack or beverage while you're playing games. The staff were friendly, and the hostess was very kind and explained how the establishment worked to all the newcomers, which was appreciated. They even provided candles, utensils, and small plates for the bday cake we brought, which was a nice touch. We were limited to a 4 person table despite having a large boardgame, so at times it was tight, it would have been nice to move to a larger table for our gaming. Hex and Co is a great way to spend a few hours with friends or family. You basically "rent" a table and you can pick from tons of different board games or role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. They have big and small tables to accommodate any sized group. You can always bring your own games as well. They serve snacks and drinks as well and it's table service so they will bring it out to you. When I heard about this "board game cafe," I was intrigued by this idea! Finally got a chance to check out Hex & Co with a party of 10 and had a fun time!! You can reserve a table in advance or walk-in. Unfortunately our giant party was late so they gave our reservation away. However, staff were really nice and able to put together some tables in the back to accomodate us. They have a whole wall of board games for you to choose from. Its first come, first serve. I believe you can also bring your games but still would have to pay the flat fee to enjoy their space. They also have another section by the cashier where you can buy new board games. Drinks/snacks wise - you have savory and sweet options between larger meals and snacks. They have tea, coffee, sodas, and alcohol (ranging from beer to cocktails). I got myself a boozy tea which I would recommend if you like tea/kombucha vibes. My friends enjoyed their beers/IPAs. The whole facility was clean with several gender neutral bathrooms. I also appreciate that they open late until 12am and can accomodate a variety of group sizes. Only wish that the games were organized in some way so its easier to navigate/search. wanted to write and let you know about the experience I had at Hex and Co, UES location on Friday, January 16. I had made a reservation for my son and 5 of his friends to go there and play games, eat dinner, and have fun for my son's birthday. We have done this for the past 4 years and never had a problem. We have also had other parties there and have gone to this location other times to play games. Anyway, as soon as we arrived, the person at the front apologized because an event that was booked ended up having double the people show up. She said that they would still accommodate the kids and immediately set up a table for us. However, soon after we sat down, the manager came over and said that we had to leave immediately. We asked her why, and she said that she needed to accommodate the overbooked people rather than serve our children. The people that showed up were playing Magic the Gathering. They appeared to be all adults. They booked their reservation for 30 people and 58 people showed up. What were we expected to do with a group of kids that were looking forward to a Friday night of playing games and eating dinner there. We told the manager that we weren't going to leave. She should deal with the overbooked people rather than kick out a group of children. She told us that they were paying more money to be there so she had to let them stay. That should not have been a factor. We did everything we were supposed to do. We made a reservation like everyone else. We stayed for 2 hours and let the boys play games. However, we made a dinner reservation somewhere else. The manager never came over to apologize, ask us if we would like anything, or make our evening better in any way. Instead she hid out in the front and served these adults who were playing board games, not ordering anything to eat or drink, and making a mess. I really felt like the situation could have been handled so much better. This manager does not know anything about customer service or how to deal with situations under pressure. She could have called us 30 minutes before we showed up and explained the situation. She could have told us she transferred our reservation to the UWS location and paid for transportation. She didn't even ask us to leave, she told us we had to leave. These kids don't all live locally. I also made the reservation for that evening and had planned accordingly. I didn't think I needed a back up plan for a birthday party. It is unbelievable to me that the company would rather accommodate an over flow of grown ups that could clearly make other plans for the evening than help a group of children celebrate a birthday. This has been a most disappointing experience, and I am appalled at the customer service and the way this situation was treated. So much so that I never want to go back. read more

On a trip to NYC we decided to stop by Hex & Company for some gaming fun. ***LOCATION*** On 1st Ave and E 76th st. We came to this Upper East Side board game cafe after a nice walk through Central Park. ***EXPERIENCE*** We came on a weekend and it was packed! Thankfully there were a few seats open, we were just told that a few tables were reserved for the evening so if we sat at them we needed to move at those times. They had drinks and food, but we just came for the board games. The games were all along the walls. I wish some tables weren't as close to the games because it made for awkward reaches over other guests or having to ask other customers to grab games for you. I like how they set up the games in sections like two-player or staff picks. We ended up playing a couple rounds of Patchwork. I loved that we came here because we had just bought another two player game the day before and it was between the one we bought (Jaipur) and Patchwork. They had all the fan favorite games, highly rated games, and more! Hex & Company has a great selection of games to choose from. The inside is very spacious, they serve tasty comfort food with a good drink selection, and they have an unbeatable $8 student charge for unlimited time. These selling points are the reason I keep coming back, instead of making the trek down to the super cramped, expensive, and very limited Uncommons over by NYU (that doesn't even serve food). However, when it comes to the actual games they offer, this Hex and Co's selection is pretty beat up. Many board games are dirty and missing pieces, and there isn't really a good system of organizing them on the shelves. Also, apparently entire board games go missing...? My friend and I wanted to play Azul, but couldn't find it and were informed by the staff that it had been lost, and they didn't know when they'd be opening a new one. The staff in general don't seem to know what they're doing, and when we asked them if they knew how to play a game (that was missing instructions) they just shrugged and told us to look up a video tutorial. The tater tots were perfect for group board game dates. They were fresh and hot, straight out of the fryer and the sweet sauce paired off really well with the salty tots. The staff were nice enough to fulfill our request for 3 cinnamon and 3 sugared mini donuts. I liked the tater tots more than the donuts. Seems to be better known as a game bar at night ($10 fee per person to play games, $8 for students). However, I went in the afternoon to do work, and it was the perfect place. Since it's a bar, they do have snacks/food like chicken tenders and tater tots, but I just got an iced hazelnut latte, which was reasonably priced. Wifi was free and strong, never disconnected like some other cafes that I've done work in, although I stayed long enough that I had to log in again. Because it's primarily for board games, there's a lot of seating and the tables are spacious. There are a decent amount of outlets as well. Again, since their prime time seems to be at night, it really wasn't crowded at all. The decor and ambiance overall is really nice, there's a complimentary water stand, and several (!) gender neutral (!!!!) bathrooms. This UES location was totally bumpin', with lots of grad students and D&D groups alike sipping on craft beers, eating bites off their surprisingly impressive gastropub menu, and playing all sorts of board games. I threw back a couple of spiked seltzers and perused the two player games. Yes, they have a whole two player game section, so this could definitely be a nice date spot. My friends and I love to play Settlers of Catan and were able to join a friendly group seated next to us that just started a round. The atmosphere encourages friendly interaction and I think we'll be back to meet fellow Catan players. The place does get pretty busy though, so if you're coming with a larger group I'd advise making a reservation. read more

This place is incredible! Tucked on a corner of 76th and 1st avenue, I constantly walk by Hex & Co. along the way to work. When I saw that this new hidden gem was opened, I immediately called a group of colleagues to spend a night after work relaxing and playing a few games there. In comparison to the more well known, OG spot of the Uncommons right by Washington Square Park, Hex & Co. was by far a far better experience there! Came here on a Monday night at 7pm with a group of four. Place wasn't too packed, and we were able to find a table to play ~3 hours of games here. PROS: Hex & Co. is interesting in a sense that its part coffee shop, part restaurant, and sells drinks, whilst at the same time it is a board game cafe. It definitely juggles a lot of different hats at once, and it does each really well. You pay $10 ($5 if you're a student) for unlimited amount of play time here, and you get to choose from a HUGE selection of board games to play with your friends. I love how the staff classified each games based on the play style, eg. heavy strategy, medium strategy, party games etc. makes it easy to find what kind of genre of games you want to play. Any well known title they will have, along with a handful of lesser known titles here too (They say they have at least a thousand board games here, correct me if I am wrong). Definitely the best bang for your buck for the $10 spent here, because there really is no time limit and you get to select whatever game you want to play! Food here was pretty good for party/social settings. We got the chicken tenders and tater tots (~$6 to $8 respectively). Tots were fried nicely and weren't too greasy, and pairs well with their Hex sauce which is a smokey version of a thousand island sauce. Chicken tenders were also moist, seasoned well, and nice and crispy on the outside. They also serve different types of coffees and milkshakes too if that is more your liking. Also served include cheeses, pizza, sandwiches. Alcohol is also served here, and they are decently priced. You can select from a selection of beers (draft and bottle), red and white wines, and they have three cocktails each costing $13 which is pretty cheap for NY cocktail prices! Staff was incredibly helpful in terms of helping us ordering food, and giving our group a history of the space and also providing great recommendations for games to play based on our own preferences and liking. Comparing Hex&Co to the Uncommons? Hex & Co is farrrr better! Why: 1. Far better and lenient pricing policy, with $10 ($5 for students) allowing you to stay as long as your hearts desire. Uncommons charges $10 for 3 hours and $5 for 1 hour, what a ripoff. 2. Drinks and food were far better made, and staff was better suited to handling our questions at Hex & Co. 3. Games were in far better condition at Hex & Co, and the same board games in Uncommons were battered and mangly and in dire need of replacement (Check out your set of Settlers of Catan). OVERALL: I will come by here more often, now that I know this hidden gem is only a five minutes away from home! read more

I asked about the empty tables and the girl at the counter replied that I could sit there for now, but if bigger group came, I would have to leave..... I've been to the upper west side location before. But was pleasantly surprised to see that they opened a location closer downtown. When I first walked in, I noticed that they have a decent amount of tables/space and a decent amount of games on display. I paid $10 for unlimited board game access (too bad, no $5 student discount on weekends). I was surprised to find that they had most of the games that I knew how to play. They have more selections to choose from than the other location and less limitations in terms of games included in the unlimited access vs games being sold. In general, I love that you can just spend hours playing games with friends in one sitting. Time goes by so fast when you are having fun. I love board games, so this is always a good option for me (whether it's raining out or not). read more
