Hubbie and I spent a weekend here, after buying a Wowcher deal for 2 nights B&B with evening meal on the first night. I'd read the very mixed reviews on TripAdvisor but we accepted that for £99 it was never going to be the Ritz. The hotel used to be a private country house, set on 19acres of land, and looks very grand from the outside. The public areas are also grand and reek of history, with a winding staircase to the upper levels, complete with coat of armour and wall hangings. A roaring coal fire greet you in both the foyer and lounge area and the dining room is bright and airy. We were in room 27 which was in the attic, reached by ascending the lovely staircase then up a further steep flight of stairs. I have asthma so I was exhausted by the time we reached the top. As there is no lift, it is not ideal for anyone with mobility problems. Our room was basic but clean. Generally, it could have done with an upgrade but, for those who require a little bit more luxury, upgrades are available for between £20-£30 per night. Positives were the staff were very friendly and accommodating, both in reception and in the dining room, and there are some rooms where pets are accepted. Dinner was lovely. Although the choice is limited, it was good quality and very tasty. I had the salmon and hubbie had steak for a supplement. We spent the weekend walking around the area, spotting wildlife, and we visited the nearby garden centre which has some lovely buys for both the interior and exterior of the home. Overall, we would recommend Hetland Hall, if you can overlook the less than luxurious rooms. read more
