At 28 High Street, Langholm, Dumfries & Galloway, DG13 0JH, United Kingdom - We booked on Expedia. Right across the street from Border House, was Buck Hotel pub where we watched boxing Saturday night. Norman the owner let us bring in our Fish and chips from next door takeout Loon Chen Chinese. The next morning, Easter Sunday, Moira made us a beautiful breakfast with a stunning view of the river and church. We walked out our back door along the river, over the bridge, to the historic church. Was the most memorable Easter yet for us. Moira's cake: She had this wonderful traditional cake plated and sliced with fine china, in our spacious and lovely guest room. She graciously gave us the recipe: weigh eggs, then same weight of: flour, sugar, butter Bake at 180 (c) / 355 (f) till done

Just a very short write up... this used to be my home until 1997! Starter was Confit of duck and ham hock & mustard seed served with toasted brioche - this was a huge portion although nowhere near the size of the Duck Wraps opposite me (where 4 were received and 1 would have been more than enough for a starter). Taste wise I preferred the ham hock as the mustard complimented it well - the confit of duck was lacking in seasoning (and I preferred the duck wrap) 7/10 Main course was one of the daily specials - a simple sounding dish of Cod with crayfish. This was another large portion with about 50 crayfish. This was fish cooked and season well with a butter sauce although I'd have liked the skin to have been crispy. The side portion of chips (shared between us) deserve a special mention as well (very good crunch)

There, I said it…read more Dumfries is probably the uggliest town in Scotland (sorry Dummies) and this pub/hotel would win the uggliest pub/hotel contest easily. But we slept there and the bartenders were very cool, both when we arrived and with breakfast when we left. Crappy rooms, in need of an update, everything smelling like American motels, you know that awful spray air refreshment odor, yikes. But the beds were not too bad and like I said, we needed a place to sleep for a reasonble price. We got that there. The wifi didn't have any reception in the room, the parking lot (huge) is a mine field of sink holes, but hey, it has a free parking place! Don't stay here longer than one night. Enjoy the breakfast.

Rooms are the usual good standard that you expect from Travelodge; a very comfy king size bed and minimal room facilities. But clean, and with a good shower. Breakfast is limited either to a pre-ordered pack of cereal and juice, or you can go to the Starbucks next door. The options there are not much better but at least they have drinkable coffee. If you are prepared to walk 5 minutes and negotiate the busy roundabout, there is a Table Table restaurant next to the Premier Inn across the road that offers a more extensive (and expensive) pub grub-style menu. Other than that, you need to be prepared to drive into town for a decent meal. There's also a Shell garage with a wee shop that you have to drive through to get out so don't forget to fuel up!

It has won some very good awards over the years but it is my favourite site as it has not slipped down the money making, big commercial route so many have. The prices charged are very reasonable to camp and the pub prices are also good. The restaurant cooks homemade food and again the prices are great.
