If you want a great Chinese meal in Amsterdam but don't want to fight the crowds in the "Chinatown"…read morecentrum, Kam Wah is exactly where you should go. Tucked away on a quiet, charming street in the heart of the Jordaan, this place is a true neighborhood staple. For those using Yelp in Europe, this is a traditional Chinese restaurant that offers both a sit-down experience and a very popular takeout service. It's small, intimate, and feels like a well-kept local secret. The Atmosphere: It is incredibly gezellig. It's the kind of place that feels "made with love." It's unpretentious and cozy--perfect for a rainy Amsterdam evening. The Service: The highlight is the hostess (a wonderful Chinese lady) who makes everyone feel like a regular. Her warm, personal approach is what really sets this place apart from the more commercial spots in the city. The Food: While the menu is "classic/basic" in the best way, everything is delicious, fresh, and consistently good. The Location: Being in the Jordaan makes it so convenient if you live in the west or just want to avoid the busy tourist center. Pro Tip: It's a smaller space, so it fills up fast. If you're in a hurry, their takeout (afhaal) is super efficient and just as high-quality as eating in. If you're looking for a "full-service" Chinese dining experience that treats you like family, definitely give Kam Wah a visit. It's one of those spots that earns your loyalty after just one visit.

While walking…read moredown the narrow but lively streets of Amsterdam, I noticed this restaurant where other asian people would eat too. So this got me curious. I decided to come back next day to give it a try. Their menu is fairly simple, and broken down by what kind of meat you want. I opted for a plate of shrimp with an extra for fried rice. I have to admit that the lady taking my order spoke to me in Mandarin and I struggled to reply to her. Was able to understand 70% of it before giving up, but that's beyond the point here. The food itself: portion was good enough to satisfy your hunger until the next meal. Taste-wise, it tasted just like what you would expect from a family-run restaurant - a feels-like home taste (which is a positive thing). There are a few tables inside and outside the restaurant where you can sit down do eat. Overall, a nice place to eat good chinese food, in the heart of Amsterdam.

Authentic Dim Sum in the Heart of Amsterdam If you are looking for authentic Chinese flavors near…read morethe Red Light District/Chinatown, Oriental City is the place to go. It's a multi-level restaurant that stays packed during prime hours, which is always a good sign for the food quality. They serve Dim Sum all day, which is a huge plus. The flavors are very traditional. While the Dim Sum was solid across the board, the Beef Chow Fun was the absolute standout--perfectly prepared with that signature "wok hei" (breath of the wok). The staff isn't necessarily warm and fuzzy, but they are efficient. Don't expect a long chat, but you'll get your food quickly. Be prepared for a bit of a climb; the restaurant spans several floors and it appears to be stairs-only. It gets very crowded, so timing your visit is key. A must-visit for Chinese food fans in Amsterdam. Just be ready for a lively, busy environment!

Their menu is impressively large and the dining room is small but inviting. Prices are quite high, but you are in a tourist area. We ordered a Kung pao chicken and a chicken fried rice to share. We both had a very weird 'chemical' taste that would occasionally occur with the Kung pao but neither of us could figure out what it was. The chicken fried rice was fine but contained very little chicken. My house white wine at 4.5 was fine as well as hubby had a Heineken. The biggest issue was the many Gnats that just descended on us once our wine arrived. If you zoom in on the picture, there were quite a few just hanging out after our plate we removed. We have been to many restaurants since we arrived here and this is the first with this issue. It got even worse once our food arrived. Very irritating. Service was just ok. We were here at a weird time because we are very jet lagged and trying to get on the time zone (needed dinner early). The staff were having their dinner so we felt a bit of a nuisance. Bill was about 50 euro.

Just a heads up that the entire menu is in Dutch, so you kind of need to know what you want before you go here if you don't speak Dutch. Unlike the other reviewer, I actually found the food to be reasonably priced, and the woman who helped me spoke great English. I got the sweet and sour chicken and vegetable fried rice, and I found it to be pretty good. Not great, but good. The portion size was HUGE. I'm a pretty big eater and I only ate half of my dish. What I liked about the chicken was that it wasn't fried; it was sautéed with the sweet and sour sauce. This was a far (and welcome) cry from many American Chinese food restaurants that fry everything. In short, this place isn't worth going out of your way for, but if you're craving cheap Chinese food where everything isn't fried, this is a solid go-to.
