Everything about this place from beginning to end exceeded expectations. We arrived at 16:00 thinking we'd just have a whiskey or two, but decided to have dinner and were not disappointed. We arrived with our bags because we were headed to the ferry after dinner. The owner gave us a menu and told us to look first because he didn't want us to be surprised by the prices (we looked like we had just wandered in off the street but I actually had planned to go there).
The owner was very friendly and kind. He offered to help with the menu which is only in Dutch and German. He also gave us information on the ferry to make sure we didn't miss the last one back to the mainland. I tried "the living cask" whiskey and my husband had a scotch which were both excellent. They have lots of great whiskey and other options on their menu. We ordered two local lamb dishes and shared them. The owner's wife cooked the meal which smelled delicious while cooking. The taste did not disappoint, but I was most impressed with the service. The elements of the dish were presented and served individual with an explanation. Most importantly, everything was VERY tasty.
After the meal, we tried to pay by credit card. The restaurant does not accept credit cards and the owner was very apologetic about it. He even told us we could take the check with us and pay later by bank transfer! We were able to pay by cash but I thought that was very funny. The owner then told us he would drive us to the ferry (6 minutes away by car). I told him it wasn't necessary but he insisted. So he personally took us to the ferry and told us about all the other restaurants he has owned on Texel.
Overall, it was a unique experience and I would definitely recommend this place! read more
