Because someone hit my car, their insurance company State Farm suggested that using Hertz (their partner) while my car is being fixed and they'd cover it. I wanted to confirm that they would drive the rental to the body shop, but neither their e-mail nor their website confirms that. I would give a zero star if it was available. My State Farm Insurance made a reservation 5 days ago with Hertz at the Mountain View location based on the repair shop that I selected. My insurance approved, and Hertz texted me the approval plus instructions to call an hour ahead so that Hertz would drop off the rental car at that car repair shop nearby. I could not get through that morning started calling 1.5 hours ahead; nobody picked up the phone, so I left several messages. Eventually I texted to Hertz, and the response said that it was escalated to their management. No call or text. Repair shop called them on my behalf, which Hertz MV picked up and said the car was on its way. 30 minutes later, the repair shop called them again. Hertz MV said they had no car or a driver ready. Repair shop drove us to the Hertz MV. I had to wait behind a queue of 5 customers with one guy outside helping someone, although I could hear noises in the back, no one came out to check. Eventually, when someone got behind the desk, I told them about the reservation and no car. Hertz MV claimed that State Farm overbooked them. I said how can someone overbooked you if the reservation was accepted 5 days ago. They asked me to check with another Hertz location nearby, but they had no driver available to drive us there even if they could locate a car there. Thankfully, the driver from the repair shop waited for us, who told us that this happens frequently that he knew better than to abandon us at the Mountain View Hertz location. Another person with a reservation was seen also turned away as we pulled out of their tiny parking lot. I will never, ever, use that location, ever again!!! read more

This company got so crooked it is unconscionable! I reserved a car for a month. Got to the location an hour after the reserved time and it was not there and they would not give me another. Had to come back 2 hours later... When I got the contract the price was higher. The manager could not explain why even though it was the car I reserved. He told me to call customer service but they could not explain it either (???) They advised me that the price is an estimate and that any discrepancy would be sorted out after I returned the car. Well... customer service said that there was nothing wrong with the new price and pretended that the original reservation did not exist and said it was because the license fee differs from vehicle to vehicle... By $60 in a month for the car in the same category??? OK, that is a big fat lie, but wait, the base rate went up from $695 to $774 and they did not even comment on that! That cannot be justified! On the same day I returned the first car I had to rent another and guess what, the same story happened again! This is a scam they run on an ongoing basis! I returned the second car and while I was waiting the same manager was telling a nice European couple that they MUST buy "insurance" for the car to drive legally in US!!! An absolute lie, for it is optional and only an owner of the vehicle can purchase it! Those crooks should not call it insurance, for their contract says it is not! It is a waiver of charges in case of an accident which is covered by personal insurance and most credit cards. It is sold for a hefty $30/day rate for a regular car and the employees get incentives for pushing it! When I went on their FB I saw they had a lawsuit and had to return $168,000,000 to customers who they claimed did not return their cars when they did! If you're renting a car from Hertz, they'll let you return it to a different rental counter, unless of course you're using emergency rental via AAA premier. Then you have to return it to the same rental counter. Don't do that on a Saturday, because all but the airport rental counters close Sundays. So they will force you to rent it another day rather than return it to a rental counter that is open. Exclusively to screw you out of an additional days fees. Vandalize their cars, it's the only solution. It certainly made me feel better. read more

I would give a Zero star if it was available. Julian provides horrible service and at the time of pick up there is no cars available. Not even if there's a reservation made prior. At arrival he wants to charge you for a different car because he has no car to give you. He also mentions he will call you if someone brings back a car. He will charge you for NO-SHOW FEE when you cancel after they have no car to give you at time of pick up. read more

Waited an hour online. Was having trouble booking the reservation over the app or on the website when I tried to get help, the representative told me that they were understaffed and that he had to help the line first (which I was on) that most likely had "reservations" but they didn't. I feel like my time was wasted and did not care about helping me. read more

They were very kind and had our vehicle ready upon arrival. Picking up the car and dropping it off we're both quick, efficient processes.

Our experience was very good. We were assisted by Richard who was VERY professional, courteous and helpful. He acknowledged our presence while he was helping someone ahead of us. He went above and beyond to help a customer who needed help with drying off the windows of her freshly washed rental. He provided us with clear info regarding our own rental. I rented a car for $105 for 2 days. I took a taxi to the Hertz pick up location and was told they did not have any cars in the category I had booked 30 minutes earlier and that I could pay more for an upgrade. I did not want an upgrade but as I was now in Hertz office nowhere near where I needed to be I did not have any choice but to agree to pay $217. Then the guy told me it was an electric vehicle but it would be fully charged and able to go 260 miles without charging. When he brought the car round it was only charged 60% so I will now have to spend some of my 2 days looking for somewhere to charge the car and figuring out how to do that as I have never done it before. After reading multiple reviews it seems like Hertz pulls this scam of confirming your reservation at one price and then claiming that they don't have the car you booked when you go to pickup. Then they offer to "help" by renting you an upgrade for twice as much! It seems Hertz is now in the extortion business as well as car rentals. read more

I booked my car a week in advance and it wasn't ready when I arrived. The guy kept asking me when I booked my car even though I told him numerous times. He tried upsell me on more stuff. Since my car wasn't ready, I ended up renting a car that was more expensive than I had originally booked. The guy also kept telling me the keys were the car when they ended being in his pants pocket.....While dealing with me, he was also on the phone with his family. I was in need of a rental car due to a rear-end accident. Apparently the person (READ: The person had just gotten her license 14 days ago and was driving her Dad's Mercedes) was looking at her phone and didn't notice that none of the cars in front of her were moving.... PLEASE TO TEXT AND DRIVE - Your "Public Service Announce" for the day... OK, back to the review. As I was looking for a rental car I had a number of questions that I needed to get answered before I entertained setting up a rental car online. The Hertz Mountain View location was convenient (close to where I was having my car repaired) so I decided to call them. I was greeted on the phone by Julian. Julian was so very patient with me and made sure that I was satisfied with the answers to my questions. He had a lot of great advice so it was only right I rent through Hertz. When it came time to pick up my car it was clean and ready to rent. Now this was no ordinary rental as multiple times I had to contact Julian and ask for an extension as my car was still at the body shop. Julian always assured me I'd have a car to use, AND he also made sure I was aware of the expenses for the extension. Throughout the entire experience Julian provided me great customer service and this is WHY I would rent with Hertz again in the future. Thank you, Julian! read more

Bad service!!! After making a reservation, we arrived to pick up our car at this location and they simply said" oh sorry we don't have a car for you" unbelievably irresponsible and unprofessional! The lady who helped us was super helpful and efficient. We needed to get a new rental car before we drop off the already rented car at Hertz (a different location). The man at airpot Hertz says we have to pay about $50 if we were to drop off at a different location than the airport. But this angel(lady) saved us the trip and let us rented the same car which we were supposed to return to 16 mi away airport. So she saved 30 mi journey. Terrible customer service. I booked online and had all my confirmation. I didn't receive any phone call or text from them except the confirmation, and I even called them to ask for a pickup but no one was answering my call (someone seemed to pick up but I didn't hear any sound for like over 1 min, then I called again and someone hanged it up). I took uber to come 15 mins early and there was one guy only at the counter (around 11am on July 11th). He then told me that they did not have the car I booked, and that it was my fault for not calling ahead of time to check and verify availability?!!! I said it wasn't my fault for not knowing that (why do I even need to book online then?), and the guy didn't offer any apology except telling me to take another car that I absolutely don't like and aint sure about the price. It was absolutely wrong in their part, but the worst thing is the attitude of the agent. He was blaming it on me and even seemed to laugh at me for showing up, then gave me a flyer with Hertz customer relation number and told me to call myself to cancel the booking and complain about anything. It's just disgusting and irresponsible. They also don't have chair to wait inside at this location, so at a hot mid-day I had to go outside and called to cancel and told them about the sh!tty attitude of the agent. They apologized and canceled and that's it, but I had to walk a bit to find a cafe then called other rental place then called another uber to go there. So I went to palo also hertz location and the asian girl there was somewhat nicer and apologized about what happened to me and helped me with getting a car I was more satisfied with. However, when I returned the car to this location today, I met another girl who tried to lecture me about calling before coming in the future. Hertz really needs to fix their listing and booking system but most importantly their employees' attitude. It's like they just show up to get salary and don't really take any responsibility for the quality of their jobs and the company image. Again, it's purely disgusting. read more

I'm always afraid of writing a "great" review of a rental car company because it just feels like tempting fate since so many are so bad... but I just had a really good experience here. I should still qualify it though. I rented here "through" State Farm because I needed a rental while my car was being repaired on a State Farm claim... which means I got a pretty solid discounted rate: $20.99 per day for a Chevy Cruze with lots of options including XM and leather. (The friendly staff strongly recommended paying a couple bucks more per day for the Cruze and I'm glad they did.) Had I just rented through the Hertz website the rate might have been more like $31. They also picked me up and dropped me off from the auto repair place that was like a mile or so away. (Free of charge!) Because they'd worked with State Farm before, they billed them directly for their portion of the rental so I was never out of pocket for anything more than my deductible, which was pretty cool. They also didn't give me a very hard time on the insurance upsells, probably because I am an informed consumer who realizes it's better to just use my own existing insurance and save the 200% price increase that insurance adds. :) Definitely would recommend using them again. read more

The worst experience i've had anywhere in my entire life. There's a woman who works there named Melissa who is downright crazy. In addition to NOT going over any part of the rental contract or telling me what the charges would be--until i asked her, she REFUSED to look at some scratches on car before i took the car!!!! When i told her i wanted to speak with her manager she started to YELL at me! WTF?!!!!!!!! Then threatened to call the police. I have never experiences anything like this my entire life. Of all the places I've ever rented cars, this is my favorite. The employees are so friendly, kind, and welcoming. Whenever I have had questions or didn't understand something, they patiently explained things to me. They are also wonderfully and refreshingly honest. For instance, they helped me pick additional insurance that fit my needs and didn't try to outrageously upsell things to me. My experiences with this location were so wonderful that I would choose them even when there were less expensive options at other businesses. To be honest, I'm a little sad that I have moved so far away that I can no longer rent from them. read more

Quite possibly the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Melissa the manager is out of her mind. She started screaming and saying that she isn't stupid when I asked her a simple question. I made a reservation, showed her the confirmation number but she wouldn't give me a car. Said she didn't have any, but there were 20 cars sitting in the parking lot? She became belligerent and threatened to call the police? She was yelling at me, not the other way around. After this ridiculous exchange I decided to take my business elsewhere. I recommend by Katy, she the owner of the Foreign Auto, she is super sweet and know how to give the outstanding customer service:) Meanwhile, register with Hertz this place is horrible customer service! Julian was helping me to register, he did explain what i need to know regarding rent. I agreed what to add $17 plus rent $25 with total on my receipt $45.85. After i left i got charged on my card $246.! Then i called spoke with julian why? Because i was not aware with $200? He said for the deposited?! But appreciated if he let me know? And i did not authorized for that! No apologize or nothing! The next day, input $10 for gas in the car and i dropped the rent car at Katy's shop ( katy recommend to drop at her shop) since i need to pick up my own car then back to work. The next day, my deposited is back to my card but Herz charged me $54.68 ? Then i called again spoke with girl name Mellisa, she was so rude and telling me thats is for all estimate cost?!!! And hang up on me Hahhhh....wow!!! Its great service here ! No wonder !! These employee need to learn be honest to the customer and learn how to be professional and be kind! I am never going to rent from Hertz again. I would give this company negative stars if possible. Their website indicated that there is a pickup point at [insert my company here] for employees only. Intrigued, I called them and asked how does this work. I actually called this office since that was the number the website gave. The guy explained to me that the actual pickup office is at 1901 W. El Camino Real. Hertz would be able to pick me up from the pickup point and then shuttle me over to the pickup location. I specifically asked if I needed to make an appointment for this service, and the guy told me NO I did not need to make an appointment for the pickup service. A few days later, I go to the pickup point around the time I reserved the car, and I called Hertz again to ask where I should meet the pickup person. They proceeded to tell me that I needed to have made a pickup appointment. Flabbergasted, I told them what the agent told me the other day and they told me SOL, I needed to make an appointment. REALLY NOW. Long story short, they attempted to send a pickup about 45 minutes past the original pickup point. At this point, I said forget it and then cancelled the appointment. read more

Hertz does not accept responsibility for their car rear-ending me. This review goes to the location that the car was returned. I was rear-ended by one of their cars at the end of November. The person that hit me was not the driver that rented the car. I collected all the information needed but after everything they denied the responsibility of fixing my car. Their excuse was that because it wasn't the person that rented the car than they aren't responsible. They admit it was their car but NO help at all. They won't even cover the deductible of $1000 for my insurance to cover the rest. Watch out when renting from Hertz because they will think of a loophole to not cover you and if you get hit by them don't expect any help. I called this location several weeks prior to needing a rental car while my car was in the shop. I specifically requested a 7:30 AM pick up from the shop, and reserved a large sized SUV. Insurance was paying for this rental. I went through everything with Hertz and they said everything would be fine. The day came to get the rental. I was not picked up at 7:30 as planned. They had no large size SUV available and gave me something much smaller. They then told me that if I wanted the large size SUV it was at another location and I would have to pay for it, despite the fact that insurance was covering everything. I was the first one to show up at this location, and I was there for a half hour. It was like a zoo. They couldn't print forms and couldn't find the keys to the vehicle. They even accused me of having them. I ended up being late for work because of all of this, and spent the entire morning on the phone with my insurance and with Hertz trying to get this all straightened out. read more

Thanks to a upsetting experience with the manager of the Hertz location in Mountain View, I'm taking my business (and my company's business) to the folks at Avis. I also wish I'd checked Yelp first before renting from this location. We rented a minivan and I picked it up a day late because they had closed by the time I could get there. The van still hadn't been cleaned, so we had to wait while they cleaned it. The fun began when I had to install the car seats when we got home, and in the process, encountered some sticky remnants of the previous renters. They had spilled food (ice-cream? chocolate milk?) over the back seats, and left other liquid food remnants in one of the cup holders. I discovered that it was pretty fresh when I accidently stuck my hand into the gunk while searching for the car seat anchors! Not surprisingly, I was quite disgusted. Furthermore, the idea of driving my guests around in a car in this state for a week wasn't very appealing. Not to fear, I thought, this is Hertz, the company with fabulous service. What could go wrong? Plenty it seems. The fun continued when my wife called the Hertz Mountain View location and spoke to the manager (Greg...who looked similar to the "John Dario" described in Federico's review) His position, "You're lucky you even have a minivan because you came to pick it up late. The best we can do is for you to come back and wait while we clean it. No, we won't compensate you for your inconvenience. No, we don't have another minivan for you" (which turned out to be inaccurate as Kayak was showing that they did have another minivan, and I spotted a minivan in their lot when we went back.) After speaking with the lovely manager, convinced it was all a misunderstanding and that Hertz, a fine company and an exemplar of customer service, would take care of it, we decided to go back to the location, return the minivan and get another vehicle. This is when things got super-fun. We met the manager in the store. Seemed like a jovial chap. Someone I'd grab a drink with at the bar. Boy was I mistaken. He repeated his "oh, you should consider yourselves lucky you have a minivan" line, looked at the gunk and suggested that that was the best their cleaning staff could do (another blatant lie since it was fairly obvious that they missed several spots...wish I'd taken photos), and said there was nothing he would do. At this point, the fun ended for me, and I was pretty upset. Shocked that he wouldn't acknowledge the state the minivan was in, and upset that he was treating my wife and I so poorly. And then it got even worse. I asked to cancel the reservation and get a full refund (we had picked it up and 10:30, and were back an hour and a half later). The manager point-blank refused to do that, and instead charged us $138!!! When I said i would dispute it with Amex, he laughed it off and said go right ahead. And when my wife said we would review this experience on Yelp, he laughed at us, saying "oh, look at me, I'm shaking in fear. You're going to write a Yelp review"...turns over to his colleague, and continues to mock us...his colleague joins in and starts laughing at us too! (My wife reports that he was actually visibly shaking, go figure). We walked out shell-shocked and deeply embarrassed. Not only did he refuse to acknowledge why we were upset with the minivan, refused to rectify it (or even offer to), he actually rudely laughed at us in front of his colleagues and other customers in the store! read more

If there was a worse rating these guys would get it. I reserved a car well I advance, checked back 3 times to be sure and when we went to pick it up they told us they didn't have the car! I'd even agreed to pay more for it. And to top it off when I told them they need to fix this the manager of the store told me to leave!!!!!! Unbelievable. And when I left he flipped me off!!' Unfriendly staff, long wait. In addition: turn signal and rear light was burnrd out, that was fairly obvious right at the beginning, car should not have been in circulation. Also watch out what they put in the contract: fuel lever was actually lower than claimed, mileage was higher. I guess they check the car in and then use it to pay for pick ups and drop offs. BEWARE, these guys add additional coverages without even informing you first !!! There are better car rentals nearby - Enterprise, Avis and Budget !!! I rented a car here over the Thanksgiving weekend. I had to wait close to 30 minutes before I got to the counter. A representative by the name Thomas was the guy who helped me out. I was given a Mazda 3 which had scratches all over the car. Thomas mentioned that since the car had scratches all over, I'm not liable for any additional scratches I make. I drove off with the car. Only when I returned it I noticed there was an additional charge for $45 ($9 x 5 days) for LDW. Usually if I'm offered LDW or if LDW is added as part of a contract I should be informed, but Thomas quietly sneaked it into my contract. Yes I made a mistake by fully not reading what I'm signing for (yes after waiting in the line for 30 minutes you just are so frustrated to get a car and leave), but just sneaking additional items into the contract without even informing a word about it to the customer seems to what Hertz does. All it says on the sheet is "LDW accepted". If I'm a first time renter who has never rented any cars before how would I even know what in the world was LDW ?? Did Thomas ever mention it to me, nope. Did he even ask me if I needed any coverage ? nope. Did I ask for any additional coverage ? nope. You know what I'm getting at, a perfect SCAM in the making. I call this office, and they say I need to come in person to get the LDW charge off. I go there the next day morning (taking an hour off from work), and Thomas says, the rental car office cannot do anything about it, and I need to contact the billing department. The worst part is Thomas claimed that he mentioned about LDW to me before I signed the contract. Hats off to Thomas, his manager and the whole Hertz company for pulling off such a wonderful scam on customers! This is the first time I rented with Hertz, and definitely the last time I ever will. I would have gladly given even $450, i.e. 10 times that amount for a good cause, but not a penny to such scammers. I think Hertz should feel disgusted for treating customers this way. Again people, stay off this rental office and most likely the whole Hertz company unless you want to be scammed. UPDATE: I sent Laura@Hertz the details of my rental, but did not hear back anything after that. Also contacted Hertz through Twitter, was just told "Tough luck buddy, you signed the contract". The front desk was really nice but it wasn't until I left the lot that I had a terrible experience with hertz. I left in a Kia Soul 10 minutes later I get pulled over for expired tags. I call the Mountain View hertz and I was told to go to the Palo Alto hertz where I could either get the tag or switch the car. Now that I switch the car a day later and the low air pressure warning sign comes on. I call Mountain View since this is where my initial rental came from and Joe was absolutely no help. I understand things happen to cars but I also didn't come to rent a car to have this kind of inconvenience hence the whole reason of renting a car. Never had this problem when I rented from enterprise. Makes sense why you guys only have only 2.5 stars I'm not the only one who's had a bad experience. read more

I reserved a rental car through the online app for same day rental. That car wasn't there when I went to pick it up. Staff (Peter) was very helpful in figuring out what cars were available. Even called to see if other car pickups might not show such that I could get their car. Peter determined which cars I could take quickly for my short, two day business trip. He is quick and realized I needed a business type vehicle. He got me the large car and I got on the road. No significant time loss for me. I recommend this Hertz agency if you want good service. It's not a large lot but has a lot offer. Thanks again Peter. read more

Not the most professional Hertz office. I have witnessed agents/customer service fighting, eating while serving you, service is super slow even as a Hertz Gold Member. The cars supplied can have cosmetic damage and are not serviced well. There is one guy there (Asian) who understands service. Luckily I am moving so won't use this office much longer. read more

The issue is not the staff ( they were very polite,friendly and helpful) but the operations. It really needs some operational transformation Tips - 1) Try not to go on a weekend ( Took me 1.5 hour to get to my car) 2) Check the car thoroughly for issues ( Mine had a check oil light on and the staff member just brushed it off saying it is normal for that car) 3) Use the gas station right behind their office while returning 4) Offer to take a dirty car if you are in a hurry ( They agreed for a ~$10 refund) Some pros- - Staff is very friendly - The prices are super cheap compared to SF area Recommendation for the staff- - Don't over book - Have more people to turn around cars faster ( there was 1 poor guy trying to clean and get the vehicle ready for 15 standing customers) read more

I'm super impressed. Seriously. Earlier this week, I was in a car accident. No worries, everyone but my car and my pride are OK. Thankfully I have AAA insurance though. I was worried about renting a car because I had attempted to rent one recently in order to save my (poor deceased) car hundreds of miles. The lady at the Budget counter at the SJ Airport (review forthcoming) was a real witch with a capital B. Believe me, I know - takes one to know one. When I called, a gentleman answered the phone (I believe his name was Logan) and asked me a few questions about what I needed, whether my policy was covering the car, and when I could be there. I told him I would need to be picked up, and he said sure - we can send someone over right now! I got my things together and sure enough, within 10 minutes (I live local to this shop) I got a call from the transport driver saying he was waiting outside. I open the door and ask him if he's the driver and the first thing he does is show me his Hertz ID so I know who he is - big plus for a single female being picked up by a male driver! His name was Kian, I believe. Super sweet guy, great conversationalist, fantastic careful driver. We get to the storefront and Kian drops me off. I go talk to Logan, who asks for ID and my AAA card. I was kinda rambling (blame it on post-accident brain) and before I knew it, he was handing me keys. Seriously? After the hassle over credit cards and other BS I got from Budget the week before? Just that easy? Yep. THAT easy. Helps that I bought the $9 a day extra coverage - I am NOT jinxing myself that soon after a crash. Because of that coverage, Logan and Kian simply walked me out to the car (a very shiny and nice-smelling Mazda sedan) and handed me keys. Total time on the ride = maybe 5 minutes.
