I have never experienced customer service this poor in my life, and I feel obligated to share this experience so other families do not find themselves in the same situation.
Our family had been planning a vacation to Sunriver, Oregon for more than six months. Family members were traveling from different parts of the country, accommodations had been reserved, and we had invested thousands of dollars into the trip. Because we were traveling with children and bringing kayaks, paddle boards, fishing gear, luggage, and vacation supplies, I reserved a full-size truck through Hertz months in advance.
A few days before our trip, on June 2, I called the Folsom Hertz location to do my due diligence. I wanted to confirm the reservation, verify driver requirements, and make sure everything was set for pickup.
During that call, a Hertz employee named Kristen informed me that an additional driver would need to appear in person to be added to the reservation. Because of scheduling conflicts, Kristen offered to move our pickup from Friday to Saturday morning. She explained that the location would be open Saturday because of a high volume of reservations, even though the reservation system showed the office as closed. She assured me that everything was taken care of and that no additional action was needed.
As a Hertz Gold Member, I relied on the information provided directly by Hertz staff.
The following day, I never received any email, phone call, or confirmation regarding the change. Because something felt off, I decided to stop by the Folsom location on Friday afternoon while running last-minute errands before our trip. I was not there to pick up the truck. I was there a day early simply to make sure everything was on track.
When I arrived, I noticed a handwritten sign on the door regarding modified operating hours, which appeared to confirm what Kristen had told me.
However, when I walked inside and gave the manager my reservation information, everything went downhill.
The manager, Sean Garcia, immediately informed me that my truck was no longer available and stated, "YOU ARE LATE."
I was completely confused. I attempted to explain the conversation I had with Kristen and the pickup change she had arranged. Instead of listening, he repeatedly interrupted me and refused to hear what I was trying to explain.
He then stated that Hertz was not required to notify customers of reservation changes. He claimed someone attempted to call me but that only a AAA phone number was listed, so they simply hung up rather than finding another way to contact me.
When I asked what had happened and requested assistance locating another truck, his response was, "GOOD LUCK LADY, WE'RE BOOKED."
I was stunned.
I wasn't yelling. I wasn't demanding anything. I was simply trying to understand what had happened to a reservation I had confirmed days earlier and find a solution.
The interaction became so hostile and uncomfortable that my young daughter, who was standing with me, started crying.
What upset me most was not just losing the truck. Mistakes happen. Reservations get mixed up. What upset me was the way I was treated while trying to understand the situation.
I felt publicly embarrassed, dismissed, belittled, and blamed for a problem I did not create. Rather than helping a customer, the manager seemed more interested in telling me why the situation was my fault.
The impact on our family trip was catastrophic. The truck was essential for transporting our family and equipment. We spent the rest of the day desperately calling Hertz reservations, visiting another Hertz location, and contacting multiple rental companies trying to find a replacement. There were no trucks available anywhere on such short notice.
The best comparison I can make is this: imagine flying to Hawaii for a family vacation that has been planned for months, arriving at your resort with your family and luggage, and being told your room was given away and there is nowhere for you to stay. That is exactly how this experience felt.
After filing a formal complaint, Hertz Corporate responded and acknowledged there had been a breakdown in communication regarding my reservation. They also acknowledged that the customer service experience I described did not meet Hertz standards.
In other words, the issue was not caused by me.
No customer should ever be treated with the level of disrespect, hostility, and lack of professionalism that I experienced during this interaction.
I strongly recommend that anyone renting from this location get every reservation change in writing, save all communications, and independently verify any modifications before their travel date.
I would never rent from this location again.
There are always two sides to every story. If anyone would like to hear the other side, the location manager Samuel (Sean) Garcia
