I flew to Kansas to visit relatives and rented a compact at Avis at the car rental at the Kansis…read moreCity International Airport and pre-paid for gas, but when I went to pick up the car they gave me an electric car - but didn't tell me that there are practically no places to charge it and no adaptor with the car so that it could be charged overnight at the house I was staying at. That severely impacted my ability to run around. I might as well have saved money and had someone pick me up since the rental car was literally useless without a way to charge it.

AVIS in downtown Kansas City and the Avis in the airport tried to scam me for pre-existing damage…read moreby sending a bill to me a month after my rental. Where to start? I reserved the car online and then rented the vehicle from "Chris" at the Kansas City downtown Avis. Chris said the car had a crack in the windshield but "you won't get charged for it," and laughed it off. After waiting over 30 minutes, I finally got keys to the car, but Chris didn't offer to do a walkthrough to review damage with me and moved on to other customers instead. I was in a rush, so I took pictures of all existing damage while still in the parking lot, as well as noting the mileage and dirty interior of the car (also, it smelled like someone tried to cover up smoke with air freshener). This was the WORST car condition for a rental I've ever seen--it was horrible. Had I known Avis and Budget in KC were linked, I wouldn't have rented from AVIS, because Budget in Kansas City ALSO pulled the same scam years ago. But in a rush to get to an appointment, I left with the photos in my phone and emailed them to myself. Later, seeing the contract, I noticed that the mileage was WAY off in the contract from actual mileage, and I called Chris to correct it. He fixed it--sort of, but not all the way and he didn't care about the details. The contract also said the car was given to me with a full tank, but it was only given to me with ¾ tank. Chris changed it for me, but to 7/8, which meant that I STILL had to fill it up because no one can get 7/8 perfectly, which is closer to full than the actual 3/4 that I had. I grudgingly filled up the tank. Upon return of the car rental at the MCI airport, the AVIS person came up and immediately noted that there was a crack in the windshield. I said "that was already there," and proceeded to show him photos taken the day I rented the car. He said "did you take these before you left the parking lot?" and I confirmed that yes, I had. I also told him that this was the worst car condition we'd ever seen in a rental car. He ignored me, then circled the crack with a big car marker and we left to get on our flight, hoping that was the end of it. A month later, AVIS sent me a letter and warned me that they're going to charge my card about $500 for a windshield crack that I didn't create. I immediately called them to report the scam, and amazingly, the representative suddenly found a document that says that the crack was present earlier than my rental. I asked him why the people sending me the bill didn't see this, and he said he didn't know. So they somehow didn't have this noted anywhere for the bill collectors at AVIS? Right. This was a clear scam, and I suspect that they charge every renter of the same car for the damage, and those who have documentation and then fight it don't get charged, while they keep trying to charge everyone for damage that they don't want to fix on their own dime. As I've said, Budget pulled the same scam with me in Kansas City years before, and I had documentation and wrote them a letter that put them to shame, so they removed the charges then as well. BEWARE! This is a shady company like Budget. This has ONLY happened to me in Kansas City, interestingly, so watch out when you rent any vehicle from any company there. Do not ever rent from this company!

I always rent my cars for work here and won't go anywhere else. The owner, Richard, always…read moreremembers me and what I prefer. Today, I was running behind and showed up late for my pickup. I didn't realize on Sundays they close at 2. My fault. But they still helped me out even though they were closed. My check in's/out's are always quick and the cars are always clean!

Avoid Avis if possible and rent from Turo or another rental agency like Hertz…read more The desk agents are content with allowing 21 customers in line to wait for over an hour while they played on their phone or browsed their computers and gossiped to each other. The one at the far end would ocassionally yell. "anyone in line a preffered customer?". When noone responded she continued to return text messages on her phone instead of helping waiting customers who were not "preferred". We were all delayed by more than an hour waiting on their agents and yet, when I returned the car 2 hours late due to traffic after a 20 hour drive for springbreak, they charged me a 50% fee (1 addt'l full day rental). They then advised me they would be waiving the $20 "late fee" as a courtesy. Ridiculous customer service and policies. They take the car and re-rent it the other 22 hours they had possession of the car early and then charge you for the full day usage. And, the off-shore, impossible to understand customer service line is worthless and simply recites the offial policy and then tells you that you understood the policy and they will not do anything to be reasonable in their approach to the situation. Terrible business operations.

Another successful rental from Avis, this time at the Kansas City Airport. I reserved my rental…read moremonths ahead from Avis' website. Being presidential club member, I received upgrade for the rental that was a newer SUV, less than 6,000 miles. The rental area is separate from the airport terminal, but free buses run every 4-5 minutes. The Avis is pretty nice that even has a good sitting area with couches. The car was ready for pickup, so I didn't have to go to the counter. The car was parked at the designated spot, perfectly cleaned, all features fully functional. I used the car for four days. We drove it for about 500 miles. There was no issues with the car at all. On the day of return, I filled the gas tank and took the car to the designated drop-off area. The return was processed in couple of days and I got the receipt in the email. Overall was really happy with Avis rental again.

If I could give less than one star I would. I will tell everyone I know and anyone I don't know…read morethat will listen to me, not to ever rent a car from these people. I rented a car after an accident and because of delays with insurance, I had to extend my rental. I extended my rental until 12/30/2025 and everything was fine. They took my money and charged a fee for adjusting the reservation, which is to be expected. On 12/28/2025, my situation changed and I was able to return the car. I called the reservation line and the guy I spoke to asked me what day and time I needed to return the car. I told him it would be back at lot by 4:30pm on 12/28 and he said, "ok, your reservation has been adjusted. I can't tell you how much your refund will be. They will tell you that when you return it." I believed him. I got the car back by the indicated time and when I walked to the counter, the lady asked if I was returning, I said yes, she said "did you leave the keys in it?" I said yes. She said "that's all we need." Avis has now charged me for having the car until 12/31/2025, which is a day past my original planned day to return. I have been in contact with them at least four times disputing the charges for three days I did not have the car, and they refuse to refund those days because I don't have a flight itinerary or ride share receipt to show them that I was there at 4:30 on the 28th. I don't have any of that because I live in Kansas City and rented the car locally because of my accident. The refuse to pull the call recording where the rep told me that he adjusted my reservation and they won't check security cameras to see me dropping the car off and standing at their counter on the day and time I was supposed to be there. Nobody should EVER rent from Avis if this is the way do business.

Avis - There's probably at least 50 people in line and it's not moving fast. Do I want insurance? Maybe because now I'm angry and tired
