My friend selected Herschel's scratch kitchen because they make everything from scratch. We seated ourselves at a booth, ( please add more cushion to your seats please) they were a bit hard, lumpy and uncomfortable. Our waitress was prompt, but very busy. Our drinks were served right away and refilled when they got low. I ordered the Phili cheesesteak, which was ok. Cut from prime rib, very good. My friend ordered a Rubin, which she said was just ok. The bread was toasted a bit too much and cut her lip. Her sweet potato fries were excellent. My fries were perfectly made. They had a seasoning that gave them that extra umph. Crispy but not too crispy. Our waitress checked on us a few times. It was loud, that was ok. Outside seating was pretty full, empty tables had left over dishes from previous diners so we ate inside. As far as Herschel's scratch kitchen goes, I'd give it 5 stars. But, the parking is horrendous!!!! I had to park 3 blocks away and I'm disabled! The streets are very narrow too. Will I go back? Only if someone drove me. I do recommend you giving Herschel's scratch kitchen a try. Good food, a bit pricy. Good luck finding a parking spot. read more

traveling a lot for work gives me the opportunity to try a variety of different restaurants that aren't a chain, but off the chain. This one was a recommendation that did not disappoint in the heart of Newport Ritchie. It is easy to miss but hard to come by the shrimp and grits had a bunch of flavor and great consistency. This is one of those meals you have to have a Pepsi with even if it's 9 o'clock in the morning. There's outside inside seating. When asking about the wait, the waitress pulled such a face, and was very passive aggressive in her handling of things, she snottily replied " well it is a scratch kitchen." I would highly recommend anyone come here for their exceptionally delicious dishes. I did come on a weekday so it wasn't as busy as the weekends just be prepared on the weekends to have a little bit of a wait, but it is well worth it. The server was polite and efficient. I was never made to feel rushed and was given plenty of time to peruse the menu. They have both outside and inside seating. I sat outside since it was such a beautiful winter day here in Florida. The shrimp and grits are everything that you would expect. I honestly thought that they would garner at least a Michelin star. Headed to New Port Richey for a late lunch and found Herschel's has extended hours now! They were serving from a dinner menu and I ordered the Pork Chop with Marsala sauce. What a delicious meal! And my friend ordered a turkey wrap with the soup of the day - Corn Chowder. His eyes got really big looking up from his first taste of chowder and said "This is REALLY good!" We arrived at 1:30 and were seated right away. Was hoping for outdoors but the only available seats were in the direct sunlight and since I burn in the moonlight - we opted for inside. We ended up at a table in the middle of the restaurant, directly in the path of a very serious AC vent...so, I was freezing every few minutes. They were busy so I didn't bother asking to move. We ordered the fried green tomatoes as a starter and they were delicious! Hot, crispy, and the remoulade sauce was outstanding!! My only criticism was that they needed a little salt - but that was easily remedied. We ordered the Eugene's fried chicken sandwich and Hazel's grilled chicken sandwich. Both were hot and well presented. They also both benefited from a bit of salt tableside. My cousin and I live in New Port Richey, but had not dined at Herschel's Scratch Kitchen yet. Well, a couple of weeks ago, she was on the "hunt" for fried green tomatoes. We saw that item on the online menu and went there for a late lunch. She was not disappointed!! The tomatoes were tasty with a perfect crunch on the outside. Got up early and decided to go for breakfast. Looked on Yelp and saw this place was 5 miles away. It was not crowded first thing in the morning so I was able to get seated right away. Ordered water and coffee while I perused the menu. Since this was my first time I decided on the Corned Beef Hash breakfast and also ordered the biscuit and gravy. The wait staff seems nice and efficient. Getting my drink order quickly. The ambiance is quaint. The furniture was dated but clean. My order came as shown in the picture. What can I say about this meal? It was average. Nothing special just your average American breakfast which was filling. A local radio superstar spoke highly of this restaurant a few weeks ago, and I found myself in the area... Perfect chance to check out a local brunch spot. Did the restaurant live up to the hype?... No. Was it good?... Yes. So my first disappointment... This restaurant doesn't have pancakes. What kind of brunch spot doesn't have pancakes. They do have French toast, they do have Belgian waffles. But, no pancakes. I ordered the chicken and waffles. The Belgian waffle was actually perfect. Not overdone, not underdone. Whatever maple syrup they have on the table is actually super good. So absolutely no complaints about the waffle. The fried chicken breast... Well, it was not as good as the waffle. The portion was actually huge. But, the chicken was void of any flavor. Publix chicken hands-down has better flavor than this chicken breast. So, all in all I have to give the chicken and waffles an "OK". I added an egg -- ordered it over hard -- it was cooked perfectly. My wife ordered some eggs Benedict dish with a side of grits. She was really excited about the grits. I think she generally liked her meal. She said the eggs Benedict sauce was a little "different" -- I sense a negative tone to this word... but it didn't seem to get in the way of her eating it. She really liked the grits. So all in all the food was good. Not great... But good. My biggest gripe was the service. Don't get me wrong... Everybody was really nice. But was this restaurant slow. I'm a patient guy... But, waiting 10 to 15 minutes to get my coffee after I order it and then having to ask for a refill 30 minutes later is a bit slow for me. Plus, after about 45 minutes to an hour of sitting and eating we had to ask for the check. It took 15 or so minutes for them to come with the check... and then 15 more minutes to pick up the check after we put a card in it. Just super slow service. Painfully slow. And the restaurant wasn't that busy... and I counted at least four servers. So, I'm not sure why it's such a slow restaurant. So, be warned, if you're in a hurry... Find a different lunch/brunch spot. read more

Decided to stop by Hershel's scratch kitchen for brunch with my wife and son. First impression of the place was small but cozy with plenty of seating outside and some seating inside for I'd guesstimate 40 folks. We looked over the menu and I compared pictures of the food before ordering online. Wife chose the world's famous chicken Benedict. The home fries were fantastic, larger than a lot of places but flavored very well. The chicken Benedict was outstanding. The chicken was paired with an absolutely phenomenal jalapeño cream sauce, as well as some perfectly poached eggs over a biscuit. Cheese appeared to be sprinkled over the top as well. Together this combination would make the angels sing in heaven it's that good. I ordered the chicken and waffle with a side of two over medium eggs. The eggs were made just right. The chicken was juicy and very flavorful. The waffle was perfectly made and paired very well together. I'd never had chicken and waffles before but can see why everyone loves this combination. I'm a local and live down the street and idk why it took me forever to break my breakfast tradition at another local spot and come here Came with my family on a busy Sunday and was sat within 20 minutes outdoors. They have an amazing variety of items. I got the Reuben which was to die for. My husband got the famous chicken Benedict and a sweet potato waffle. He loved both of them! My mom got an omelet and my dad got a burger. My dad didn't love his burger but it was only because we were over the moon with our choices and I think he felt left out haha. I haven't been this happy with a local eatery in a while and I'm going to be singing your praises to anyone who will listen. Herschel's you are a local 5 Star in my book. First time here, It was a "What's nearby," pick. So we parked (in a FREE parking lot! Don't find those very often and frankly I wish cities would offer it more to keep local downtown businesses going. So thank you NPR.). We entered and were seated immediately (our choice inside, outside was full). Literally 10 minutes later the place was full and there was a wait to be seated. Now, if you were not lucky enough to be seated right away, this place is worth the wait. We perused the lengthy breakfast and lunch menu and both of us had a difficult time deciding on what to pick because we wanted to try everything. We settled for lunch items, only because it was after 1pm, and we did have breakfast already. We picked two burgers: Bubba Burger and the Herschel's Burger add a Sunnyside Egg. Both came with sides of our choice. I picked fries and my daughter picked Mac n Cheese. Now the fries were delicious, but I ended up being jealous that my kid picked the bombshell Mac n Cheese Skillet as her side. I was able to get two tiny bites (well not exactly tiny, but she cut me off!). It was cheesy, creamy, perfection and I haven't had Mac n Cheese like this before, it was incredible! This comes from a woman who didn't grow up with Mac n Cheese and frankly, it's never been my preferred side or meal. Here at Herschel's I will be ordering it every time and as I write this my taste buds are craving a return. The Burgers were juicy and yummy as well and we had an absolutely lovely lunch at a reasonable price.
