I made my return to HeroesCon after a long absence. It's a great con and I had a great time. It's so much to see, do and buy so if a comics fan protect your pockets. It's pretty well organized and great fans attending. Never had any issues and people are friendly. There are various panels you can attend and listen to your favorite creators and ask them questions. My favorite comic convention to attend. It's well worth the 4 hour drive to visit every year. The price to attend is great: $15/day or $30/3 Day pass when bought in advance. There is always a great selection of writers and artists from the world of comics, films, novels, and even animation in attendance. There is a high level of geeky/nerdy fun to be had here. HeroesCon is different than many other cons out there because it still focuses mainly on the comic books and not the latest movie, tv series, or video game. All of the local stores come out so you get to see a lot of familiar faces at the booths. There are a plethora of artists and writers who get tables so you can watch them work and get to meet them. Looking for merch? This con has plenty of merch booths. My favorite parts of this con are the cosplay and discovering local independent businesses (Like HandmadeStuffs, HeroSquares, TeeMinus24, etc.). The attendees are a great variety of demographics. People are very amicable and have no trouble striking up conversations with strangers. Cosplayers are very gracious and willing to strike a pose or chat. I've been going to HeroesCon for well over 5 years now and it keeps getting better without losing the aesthetic that keeps packing people in. Tip: don't want a convention lunch? You're already in uptown so take a walk to any number of restaurants. Don't want to take a long break? Fuel Pizza has a location directly across from the main entrance. I love, love, love this comics convention! I love that there is tons of cosplay, signings and speakers. The artists are amazing and I almost always come out of there with something cool. There is tons of stuff to look at and explore! I love that the artists are almost always willing to draw you into their world and discuss their reasonings and rhymes of what they do even as they are working in front of you on something! They are very engaging and that is a great aspect to this convention. I think the convention center does a great job with the flow and keeping things neat and tidy. Heroes con is for pretty serious collectors but there's plenty for kids, anime fans, and Star Trek / Star Wars freaks too. Last year there were several Storm Troopers and others dressed in their favorite science fiction getup. They also have a lot of pretty famous comic book artists show up. I was amazed to see my favorite artist from when I was a kid sitting there signing autographs. It's a fun more geeky, less freaky weekend. read more

If you are a self proclaimed comic book junkie ( I am not). If you are into fantasy and SciFi ( I am not) and if you get off dressing up like your favorite comic book character (I do not) then this is the place for you. Please allow me to add a disclaimer, I have nothing against comics or their readers. It's more me, I'm embarrassed to say. I never learned how to read a comic book. You have text, pictures and speak bubbles all in a block layout. Dear God what do I read or look at first? It makes me dizzy so therefore I choose not to read them. Yesterday I lost my Comic Book Convention virginity thanks in part to my children who are Super Hero obsessed. I have to say, if you can look beyond the weirdness, is that even possible, then you will have a good/great time there. The vendors with their boxes and boxes and more boxes of comic books are a little overwhelming but most of them have the books in alphabetical order (thank you Jesus). All of the vendors I spoke to were very knowledgeable about their offerings and I think they found me amusing considering I was walking around asking for more "girlie girl" comics. You know, more wholesome books for my daughter who didn't need to see the ladies with the over sized boobies in a g string and fingernails as long as my arm. We settled for some Archie books for a buck ($). Success! My favorite part of the day, the ARTISTS that were on hand actually drawing on the spot these incredible images. OMG, they were AMAZING and mesmerizing to watch. It was an honor to be in the same room with some truly amazing talent. One of the guys we were with (who owns a comic book store in Fayetteville) told me that a lot of the artists there were unpublished. What? How can these people not be recognized for this work? This my friends is why next year you need to go to this convention. If for nothing else then to soak in the sights of the people doing what they do best and to recognize them and the talent they were blessed with. So go hang out in blocks 600,700 and 800. Heroescon is really cool albeit mainly for the access to the artists. From unpublished to published to vets and greenhorns, there is some serious talent amongst the ranks. The best part is most of them are really friendly and approachable even if some are big names. It definitely feels more art centric here. Last time I attended, they had the dealer's room and artist's alley within the same space. I think that's their norm though. I personally love that. I'm not much of a fan of the mentality where people will fling money at just the dealers then hit the alley and go "poop, if only I'd known you were here! I'd have bought that awesome commission or print" or what have you. Most people I know will prowl the whole room first memo-ing what they want or just what immediately strikes them. Needless to say, I like Heroes' set up. The dealers also weren't jacking up prices sky high which was refreshing. You'll still find those sky high prices but a majority of items were run on deals. Most people bring an inventory list of what they need for their collection anyway... It's a good idea since there is a likely chance you'll find at least some of it at a nice price. I've had an artist's alley table here & just attended. I enjoyed the attending more, mostly, as I was sharing a table with a few others, and it was kinda crowded. They supply 2 chairs but for extra you can get a third. Table prices were reasonable too. One particular thing I noticed was the con wasn't as cosplay heavy. At least when I last attended, roughly a year ago, it might have been in the last go around since cosplay's popularity spike, but I was surprised not to at least see more western comic or comic cosplays as one might encounter at Dragoncon. But I guess, since Heroes isn't a heavy party con, it'd not attract them which is fine. Don't get me wrong though, there are still cosplayers killing it in their awesome costumes. You'll see enough on a Saturday at least. Just not everyone and their grandma in costume as it is at some cons. At nights they also have drink & draws. I'm not much a drinker, but it's a really cool way to socialize with other artists and the comic book industry people. Heroes is probably the most chill conwith an older, mature attendance. Very family-oriented too and near 7th Street Market so huge wins all around. If you're an aspiring comic artist, I'd definitely make my way there to check it out. HeroesCon is what San Diego Comic-Con use to be. It is by far my favorite comic-con on the East Coast. They pride themselves on being family friendly, fun and not selling out to Hollywood. Their comic guests include AAA talent like Ryan Stegman (Spider-Man, Wolverine), Art Adams (All-New X-Men, Longshot), Kevin Eastman (TMNT co-creator), Mark Said (writer for Marvel & DC), Ryan Ottley (Invincible) and many more. A few years ago, a friend and I drove up to Baltimore Comic-Con, and yeah, it was awesome. The next year we decided to try out HeroesCon, and yeah, it was better. At Heroes, there's definitely an emphasis on writers and artists. Sure, it's a great place to pick up awesome deals on trade paperbacks and back issues. HeroesCon is a wonderful con for whether you are looking to meet comic creators, shop for back-issues or rare gems, purchase collectibles, or cosplay. It has quite a few open areas where folks can congregate and socialize and lots of fun events and panels. If you've never been to a show before this is a great one and while it definitely focuses on comics above all else (which is a great thing) there is definitely something for everyone. My wife and I have attended every year for the past 7 or so years and we always have a blast. My only criticism is that you do need to be aware that the prices on any new or recent collectibles tend to be heavily inflated by vendors. Shop around and know the going rates because the mighty Scalp-or, evil master of scalping, tends to reign supreme here. For buying older collectibles, hand-made items, indie comic books, and comics in general you won't find a better place! read more

DO NOT PURCHASE THE VIP!!!! We paid around $300 each (three of us) and were put in he back of the line with people who only purchased the one ticket for either autograph or photo. VIP means absolutely nothing!!!!! I had NUMEROUS individuals way ahead of me who just purchased the minimal ticket and no three day pass. The show staff (white shirts) were about the most rude people I've come across at a convention (been to countless Cons) and were of zero help when it came to help. They didn't know what was going on, couldn't answer questions and didn't even pretend to care about what was being asked or helping. It was all about herding people and being rude when it came to stopping the lines. The bald black guy even tried to start fights with people. It was the most unorganised thing I've witnessed in a while. STAN LEE was a very nice guy but his staff were pretty rude. They were even rushing stan along when he tried to talk to fans. It was not a memorable experience. Next I'll explain the lines: there was the autograph line (took me 2 hours WITH my useless VIP max pass), then I had to go to the back of the line again and wait another 2 hours for my photo, then I had to wait about 1.5 hours to get in line to pick up my photo. All of the people in the line were mixed together. No differentiation between VIP, single ticket purchases, 3 day passes, nothing. Also the VIP REQUIRED a 3 day pass purchase (so I had both). Then we went to ask about another autograph, hey wanted another $100 each. That's ridiculous. I know it's stan lee but his autograph isn't worth $100 (do research, he's signed MILLIONS of times over the years). It was a big fat money grab and you didn't even get treated with decency. Waste of time. Also: I got out of line to go walk around a little bit (I didn't pay all that money to stand in line all day and not enjoy the show) and left my fiancée in line so I could come back to the same spot. We were going to take turns waiting in line. NOPE!!!! They made it absolutely clear that wasn't going to happen. I came back and the guy wouldn't let me back in line. I explained "that is my fiancée right there!! He said "sorry you have to get in the back of the line" he acted like I was lying to him. He didn't even want to listen to what I had to say. Completely un accommodating. Finally I got sick of the nonsense and pushed passed him and just gave my fiancée my stan lee autograph tickets and just had her get the autograph for me. I didn't even get to see him until the photo. So I paid the $ but didn't even get to stand there and talk to him or watch him autograph my Spiderman comic from the 60s. I wasn't going to wait another 2 hours just to get my autograph when we already had a spot in line waiting like everyone else. The guy started talking crap to me as I walked past him and I told him to shove it. Unprofessional nonsense!!! They acted like I was breaking into Fort Knox. Complete jerks. Outside of the Stan lee experience I found people and artist to be generally very nice. Had a great time on the floor looking at comics. Some incredibly over priced (as with most cons) and some pretty decently priced (which was nice). One good thing I'll say they did do was have coca cola people walk around with free cold shots of coke. Those people were very nice. All in all I'd say it was likened to a small convention not well organised and somewhat rushed together. But he event staff were jerks. When I went to advanced ticket pickup there were lines everywhere and nine of the staff knew where they were going or why the people were lined up, turns out 3/4s of them were in the wrong line. Then we got our badges and got onto the floor and found out we didn't have all the stuff for our VIP tickets, had to go back upstairs and get the cards for the autograph and photo because the guy didn't give them to us.
