My dog was still ok ,the vet said to take her home I should have because she was still in good health I was worried that she was contacted because she did have a bowel movement for a few days but the vet said she wasn't. She was old and had some problems going in circles but she was still eating and drinking she was still very much alert and walking .I feel that I need more answers and information before I signed the papers to euthanasia my dog but they sent in the pushy receptionist that brought in the paper snd to get the money frist ,I ask the receptionist if I could get some medication for pain she came back and said the doctor said no the veterinary should have came and talked to me more .Now I am dealing with guilt and feel like I murder my dog .the pains is so heavy at times in my heart I feel like zi am going to have a heart attack can't sleep heart broken over the whole experience horrible when your fog is clingy to you and to given her over to like the gas chamber. Her ear were back her big brown eyes were so big and she was scared ,after 15 years of love and devotion this is what I did to my dog .I need answers and support. Praying for God to forgive me.trying to live with myself now is horrible. I believe life is precious .If she was weaker and more fragile I would understand .But the receptionist said what if something happens on the weekend and we're not opened. I should have thought it threw ,their always emergency vet opened 24 hours. The morning I bought her in she looks comfortable. read more

They have good hours, but the cost to spade is $600 right now. This is expensive and prohibitive for some people on lower income. I cannot qualify for low enough income at the Humane Society. The cost of living is driving up too high, and the population of dogs are too high as well. It hurts me significantly that I can't carry on the bloodline of my dog and the nature of controlling unwanted dogs, I will take my steps to help solve the problem. I shouldn't have to pay this much money to help Dog Care. I think the government of Alberta, and perhaps government of Canada should regulate the cost of this surgery to relieve the stress on the Humane Society. read more

I'm so glad someone else loves this place, too! My husband has been taking his animals here for 35 years and when I married into the family, I started bringing our pets here, too. They take the time to get to know you and your pet! We have 4 cats - 3 with special needs that are rescue cats that require special diets and medication. Dr. Romanafu and Dr. Purcell are phenomenal cat whisperers and have helped us through many problems when many others told us to give up! Last year we made the tough decision to put down one of our cats - and while the whole process of paying to have your cat put down was painful they really did some touching things in the months that followed to help! The place we had the ashes spread (advertised through the vet) is a farm just outside the city with acres and acres of trees and hills so you know your animal is resting in a place they would have loved to run through! After the passing of our cat, we received a card from all the staff and a packet of seeds to plant in memory of our pet. At Christmas we received a card signed from all the staff letting us know our pet wasn't forgotten and that a special ornament with our cat's name was put on the tree for all to see and that we could come and pick it up anytime or they could put it up year after year on their trees. It's these little things that really helped us through this difficult time. Now we live across the city and still make the 45 minute trek to visit Hermitage Vet! read more

I've had to use their services a few times for my dog. She had a lump on the side of her neck that was a fluid sack. It kept getting bigger and bigger each time we drained it. The veterinary hospital is wonderful my dog has severe anxiety going into the building. They always offer me medication for night before and day of if she has a visit I dropped my dog off this morning at eight for her surgery to get rid of the lump and being the first parent I am I called to see how she was doing and I was told that we could come get her because she wanted to recover at home, yes my girl has a massive scar on the side of her neck but the lump is gone and I can definitely see my dog living for an extra few years because of this the difference is staggering. I would recommend Dr. Ward to anyone she is kind and thorough, and extremely well rounded and knowledgable about her Profession I even got a call the next day to see how my dog was doing. You can't ask for a better service than that. I highly recommend going especially if you feel uncomfortable going to the vet yourself. I wish I could put a rating here of 10 read more

They had no appointments for sick cat but if I paid an extra $40 they could fit her in. Feels a bit like a ransom demand

I've been taking my pets to Hermitage since I was a kid, but it is definitely time to move on. Yesterday I brought my dog in for his annual shots. $650 later, I left with a bunch of prescriptions and in hindsight, really unnecessary bloodwork. For the last year or so we have been dealing with his arthritis. Last year I brought him in when it started. He had lost weight and seemed to be in terrible pain. I did not receive much more than prescriptions and more bloodwork from Dr. Bilsborrow, and her assumption that he had cancer, which she wanted to do even more bloodwork for. After a second opinion from another vet, which confirmed that he is just aging and arthritic, I began to take him to the wonderful physiotherapist at Crestwood Vet and between her treatment and changes in his diet, he has improved vastly and is his happy self once again. Yesterday during the appointment, Dr. Bilsborrow showed a bit of lack of progressive thought, as well as a condescending attitude, but again really only offering more prescriptions. I can get those from any vet, really. I have no doubt that with more experience and more curiosity to explore methods outside of what she already knows she could become a wonderful vet, but I don't think I'll be waiting that out. I thought I would give Hermitage one more try, as it's convenient and I have been going there for so long, but I left yesterday feeling that I did not receive value for the money I paid. I'll be looking for a vet with more experience, less ego, and a more progressive mindset. On the upside, the staff that brought my dog in and out of the building for his appointment were really fantastic! read more

I have been taking my cat into Hermitage Vet for almost 2 years and they always provide the best service. They are very accommodating and try to get my cat in as soon as possible. The staff are very friendly and have answered many of my questions over the phone when I have them. Each vet takes good care of my pet when they have him and I am never worried about leaving him with them. read more

Historically, I was a big fan and avid supporter of the Hermitage Vet Hospital, so it is unfortunate that from the time Dr. Purcell retired, the hospital has determined that it no longer wants to do any of the pet nails work that we had performed simultaneous to regularly obtaining our 130.00 dog food pack. Not one test I paid for was for this lungs or why he might not be breathing well. $500 later, I got no answer and then had to pay emergency fees at another vet when I had to take him back in the following day when it got worse. This vet may be "nice" but that doesn't mean shit when your pet is sick and they over charge for tests you didn't even need. go to literally any other vet in Alberta, this vet clinic only cares about money- not your pet. read more

I love this vet. They have an awesome weight management program which is totally free. They also have some amazing vets. I take my to big dogs with there own special sets of problems and they did everything to help them. They are now healthy happy and my one is managing her hip dysplasia beautifully. read more

While the staff and Vet were great with my dog they refused to fax the medication prescription to my online pet pharmacy https://www.petsdrugmart.ca and it was a toll free fax number. If they filled it is was going to cost me 218.00 and online it was 175.00. Going to a vet is expensive enough and I need to save money where I can. I am disappointed in there lack of help. Nothing but the best. I can't say enough good things about this veterinary hospital! Growing up, we always took our family dogs here, so it was just a natural course of action that when I had a dog of my own, this was the place; I had no idea that compared to other Edmonton vets, this place EXCELS so much. Dr. Purcell has so much care and knowledge Dr. Mann is a young go-getter, new (that I'm aware of?) to this Vet; he is respectful of your knowledge base as an owner and asks for your insight. But, Kerry (the nutritionist) is the main reason we keep coming back. She is one of the most down-to-earth and call-it-like-she-sees it people I have ever met. She has great suggestions for weight management, training options, and general dog-related information. Every time we go in, everyone we encounter remembers our dog by name... my own family doctor can't even do that for me... This Vet also is also building its own community though a dog-walking club (which may sound awkward, but is actually a total hoot!) YAY HERMITAGE VET! read more

Dr. Bodington is amazing. She truly loves animals and we always feel they are safe in her care.

It is painful enough to have to lose a pet, without having services offered like paw prints for momentos, only to lose them in the mail. Why offer these services then? It's giving hope to a sad situation and ripping it away. I was looking forward to giving that paw print to my daughter for Christmas, who has been distraught thoughout this death. You could have called. We would have been more than happy to pick up the paw print the way we had to with the remains. Good to know that you don't really keep things on file, I guess.. read more

Our Jack Russell has been struggling with allergies and the symptoms associated with that for a few months. A hot spot on his tail, an ear infection and the like. Our previous vet just kept treating each as an individual ailment, not telling us it was probably allergies. Now with both of his ears infected again and his skin so itchy he was rubbing his eyes raw, we decided to switch vet clinics. Well, we have no regrets! They got us in on a Saturday, last minute. All the girls behind the counter were so delightful and Dr. Boddington was the sweetest Vet I've ever met! She confirmed its likely allergies, but recommended against doing the allergy test because it's expensive and almost always comes back that they're allergic to grass. I appreciated the honesty (because as a worried dog owner, I would pay anything to make him feel better!) My friend came with me for the appointment and even she agreed that she would travel across the city for the service we got yesterday! Will be going here for the foreseeable future! read more

Our dog has had repeated ear infections for years and numerous bumps all over her body. Saw Dr. Megan Clark and she diagnosed her as having allergies, started her on non-allergenic food and the right shampoo. Bumps have almost all disappeared and ear infections decreased in frequency, much happier dog and owners. read more

I've been visiting Hermitage Veterinary for 11 years now, and I can't express my sincerest appreciation for Dr. Howard, and staff, enough! I wholeheartedly trust Dr. Howard and her professional service, advice, and opinions; she has NEVER steered me wrong. She offers the utmost compassion to our pets, to me, and to our family members. We recently said goodbye to one of our dogs, and Dr. Howard, and staff, was there every step of the way! I visited the hospital again recently with another pet for a routine exam and vaccinations, and, again, left feeling fully taken care of and was positively assured we are doing a great job with our pets! This type of service is very much appreciated and I don't know what I would do without it! read more

Horrible service. Money hungry vets. I was a client for years which was ok for a regular check up. Still more than other clinics but close to my home. When something went wrong with my dog kept bringing him back trying different meds charging me along the way. That's ok. I'm fine with that. But when things worsen they refused to help him in a timely matter. For some of us our pets are our life. Our children. When we are left out to dry and told to come in to pay for another checkup because our vet isn't in, leaves us feeling used. They lead you to think they care. My experience is the opposite. If I could award fewer than one star to this hospital, I would. However that is apparently not an option. First of, this review is not a negative review of the doctors and other specialists who work at this hospital. In particular, we have over the years seen Dr. Heather Lam, and she is a wonderful, patient practitioner who puts our anxious pet at ease. My issue is with the support staff at this hospital. They are all entirely incompetent. They are continuously incapable of making appointments (apparently, they don't have access to their doctor's schedules, which is absolutely ridiculous). And, once you do make an appointment, they apparently believe it is acceptable to call one hour before the appointment time to let you know there was a "mix up" and that the doctor is not actually available at that time. If this were a one time issue, I wouldn't be taking an effort to write this review. Quite frankly, this lack of professionalism is troubling. The lack of respect for the other party's time and schedule is insulting and should not be tolerated. I will never recommend this hospital to my friends and I certainly hope that the owners wake up to the reality they are facing. If they do not, they will go out of business. This is Alberta - replace your useless support staff with competent, compassionate people, who understand what it is means to work at a veterinary hospital. read more

Sending your pet here is a death sentence. This is the second time a cat of mine has become critically ill due to the neglect of the staff. The first cat had to be put down and the second is in critical condition at the emergency pet hospital right now. If the vet wouldn't have told me that my cat wasn't sick when I took her in when I was suspicious of her weight loss then she will be this ill right now. She has liver failure and I'm not sure how the staff didn't see it because she has yellowing of her ears and mouth. Due to their neglect, I am now paying thousands of dollars to the emergency clinic to try to keep my cat alive, and there is no guarantee she will make it. Do yourselves and your pets a favour and don't send them here otherwise it may end in a irreconcilable way. read more

I have been taking my dog here for as long as I can remember but when I called today to get a minor cut on my dogs ear checked out by a vet the receptionist claimed that they didn't handle that sort of thing and that I had to take him to and emergency clinic that ended up costing me over $500.00. I looked on their website and it said that they perform surgeries in house but they can't handle a cut? This place is great for check ups but isn't there when you really need them. read more

This place should close their doors. They are a bunch of crooks, and it does make me sad because I, as well as friends and family members of mine had trusted them with our animals care. A friend brought her sick, dying dog in to be euthanized and the vet assistant who put the needle the arm didn't put it in a vein, but just simply under the skin. When they injected the dog it caused her to roll around in pain, crying and did not put her to sleep! They asked her traumatized owner to hold the dog down while they put a new needle in the arm. After the procedure was finally done, they still made the woman pay for the bill! I'm disgusted at their work ethic, or lack there of. I could go on for days about multiple other stories from friends and family members who also had horrible experiences here, but that one alone should turn anyone away from this place. read more

Hermitage Veterinary Hispital wasn't my usual vet, but their hours are great, so when a crisis arose with one of my cats, my previous vet told me to try there. I was more than happy with how they took care of my Klaus and even followed up to see how things were going. They are now my first choice and will be going there for all future vet visits. Please do not take your animal there when they are unwell. The physicians do not obviously know the signs and symptoms of renal disease. My companion was taken to numerous appointments within a four week period. They focused primarily on the diagnosis of pancreatitis instead my dog was in renal failure. My dog was getting progressively worse during the four week period. When he was sent to a specialist, he was in stage 4 renal failure. Unfortunately he suffered dearly read more

Professional but so caring. They take the time to listen, to understand and to help and teach me. They may give good care to animals as some have stated but their prices are outrageous. My vet is form outside Edmonton and not open Saturday or Sunday. As a consequence I phoned asking for prices for euthanasia as my cat is suffering. I can't watch him suffer until Monday when I can get him to his normal vet. Hermitage wants $93.50 for an exam, $145.42 for euthanasia and $80.00 for a communal burial. I guess they really don't care if an animal is suffering. read more

I have been using this vet hospital for the past 2.5 yrs. We love all the staff here and all the staff truly love their patients.

The vet, Dr Maan seemed very hyper and rushed when I brought my cat in to be checked. He definitely did not have a calming presence for my already terrified cat. Turns out my cat is diabetic and I was sold a tiny vial of insulin (2.5 mL) for $68. I later searched online for the same insulin and found it sold by a Canadian pet pharmacy for $27 and $3 shipping for a 10 mL vial. That is a total rip off what this clinic is charging for it! They also recommended purina D/M cat food. That cat food may be ok, but it still has grains in it which diabetic cats shouldn't have. There are better foods out there similar in cost that have a slightly higher level of protein and are grain free and potato free so the level of carbs is minimal which is better for a cat with diabetes- they are not meant to eat grains and even in small amounts it is unnecessary. I am unimpressed as the vets should have this knowledge already but maybe it pays for them to prescribe cat foods with grains to ensure your pet remains on their expensive insulin shots forever? Either it seems that is the case or they need to do a little research since their last lessons in vet school and update their knowledge. In addition to that I had charges that they added on to my bill which I paid at the clinic then sent me another bill in the mail for the same charges I already paid. The bill indicated "amount owing" for something I paid for the last time I was at the clinic. Not cool. It's really unfortunate there are clinics or vets like this because it seems they may become vets because they love animals but then allow the almighty dollar to take over and charge people ridiculous prices, allowing the animal's well-being to take a back seat to that. And to think there are some people who end up giving up (or putting down) their pets because the treatment is too expensive and unaffordable for them...but it doesn't always need to be. I recommend anyone paying for medications for their pets to check out pet pharmacies online before paying exorbitant prices for medications at the vet clinic. On a positive note, the receptionists are great and the vet tech was also very helpful, but I won't be coming back. read more

We found Hermitage vet hospital by accident and are very glad that we did. Both my dog and I are always greeted extremely warmly by everyone that works there. It's as if they are happy to see us! I always have a million questions (some that I ask more than once) and I always get an answer. Everyone there is extremely knowledgeable. When my dog was neutered, the vet (Dr. Boddington) took the time out of her day to call me directly and reassure me that my dog was ok and answer any questions that I had at the time. I also never feel like I am being "sold" treatment that my dog doesn't need. My dog has always had good care and I never worry about him when he is there or when we come home! We recently experianced how AMAZING Hermitage Vet is. We had a cat who fell ill on a SUNDAY. after an hour of waiting in a WARM room at the EMERG. PET CLINIC in downtown Edmonton, we were quoted with a 1900 dollar bill, JUST TO RUN TESTS!!!. We decided to wait till monday morning, to take our precious Cat to HERMITAGE. Not only we were treated VERY well, but so was our baby. We definetly thought she was going to die. she is not even 3 years old, my heart was breaking. for the next day and a bit we were constantly worried. The doctor (Dr. Miller) kept us informed on how our kitty was doing. we Finally got to pick her up on Tuesday evening. They did advise she STILL wasnt eating, but we would have to force feed her. However when we got home, our baby was eating and playing and rolling all over the place. We know there are obsticles to come but our Jasper has done a complete 180, from the way she was on sunday. I thank these wonderful doctors from the bottom of my heart for saving her!!! read more

Dr. Purcell and Dr. Armstrong were nothing short of amazing in helping me when my little fur baby got sick. Sadly she was really ill and needed to be put down a few days ago. Not only was the vet tech Kacey an absolute god send, she and Dr. Armstrong were super supportive when I broke down after my beloved dog had been put down. Thank you for all the care and time you have given me and my late Muffy. When I decide to expand my family again, I will be sure to visit here again! read more

This place is so so amazing, nothing but the best. Every single person there adores your animals. My dogs love this place and all the workers there. I would recommend this clinic to anyone, have always gone here. Had two traumatic incidents and they were amazing in both. Vets are a very personal decision, that being said I always recommend Hermitage Vet Hospital they have been my vet for 4 years now and I am always so glad that they are. Reception staff is friendly and caring and they always take the time to come and give my dogs cookies as we wait and say "hello" at events like Pets in the Park when they see us around town. I usually see Dr. Howard, she is compassionate, insightful and experienced and friendly with both my dogs. We have also seen Dr. Miller and she is also wonderful (don't let her young age fool you she has plenty of great knowledge). They have always been respectful of my choices in regards to foods/medications/testing etc and never push tests or treatments without trying an easier option first. I highly recommend this clinic for everyone. Especially because they have so many doctors working with vastly different backgrounds/experience that if your normal vet doesn't know they can get a consult from another vet in-clinic. read more

I would give this place no stars if I could!! I have been bringing my dogs to Hermitage since 2007; I have never had any serious health problems with any of my three dogs up until just recently when I got a new puppy. Every appointment that I have ever had to make was just for routine check-ups and shots. We decided to get a new puppy and took him in for his deworming shots and a check up a week after we got him. While I was in there the vet had asked me if I would like to do a 30 day trial for pet insurance. I jumped at the idea knowing that with puppies they are more likely to either get hurt or sick then older dogs. She informed me that she had signed me up for the program and that was it. Now clearly I am not a vet or work in a veterinary facility so I am completely unaware as to how things work with pet insurance. To my understanding everything was done while I was in the office so as you could imagine I was completely shocked when my dog just out of the blue started seizing and I had to rush him to the emergency. I was asked by the emergency vet if I had pet insurance and I explained to him that yes I am on a 30 day trial with Trupanion that Hermitage vet set me up with. He told me that, that is awesome news because they had no idea what was causing the seizures and they needed to run a bunch of tests which could end up costing a lot. They tried to do direct billing but much to my surprise I was not actually set up for the 30 day trial.. like I was told I was. When I called Hermitage to see what was going on I kept on getting the run around.. transferred to several different people until finally they said that they would call me back.. I never got the call back.. and when I called back I was told that I didn't sign up for it via email. THEY NEVER SENT ME THE EMAIL! and they just blamed it on human error.. well their "human error" ended up costing me $3000. Following that horrific weekend I signed up for Trupanion on my own online. We needed to continue getting blood every two weeks as well as refills on his medication. The first time he was taken into Hermitage for his blood work after he had been on the medication for two weeks was a nightmare. I have told the staff at reception as well as the vet taking care of our puppy that we have pet insurance through Trupanion and that we needed all of his information to be sent to the insurance company so that they could start direct billing them, again I was told no problem it will get done. I had to pay for the first visit but that they would direct bill every time after that. The second visit comes and again I asked them if they had sent all my paperwork to the insurance company and again they asked for all of the information because they had no record of them on my file.. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! how many times do these people have to be told?? I don't get it if this is the company that you are suggesting to your guest's you would think that they would get the work done properly and know how to do it. Third time I called to set up the appt for my dog to go in for more blood work. I asked them if they could make 100% sure that they are sending the information to the insurance company to direct bill, once again I am told that they are unable to send all of the information to direct bill because the file is not complete. The receptionist called me back and informed me that I can bring in the claim form and she can have one of the vets fill it out and the insurance company can send me a chq in the mail once the blood work is done however I do need to pay upfront. I said wow I find it a little hard to believe that it takes 2 and a half months for the file to get completed and that the information was obviously just sent to the insurance company that day to complete the file. The receptionist on the other end was extremely rude and said "is that all?" and then hung up on me. This place is only about making that extra buck they don't actually care about you the customer or your animal as long as they are getting paid.
