Henry is a master stylist and colorist. I have a favorite picture that keeps popping up on my Apple photos and it is from when he cut and colored my hair years ago. After many bad haircuts elsewhere I am finally going to pony up the money and go back to Henry and let him fix my horrible haircut. (I got desperate and did a walk-in haircut.) Ugh! read more

I've been a happy client of the wonderful and talented Henry since 2016. I have referred many friends over the years and everyone, like me, loves Henry's technique and his personality even more. Truly a kind and caring person. For this review, I will highlight the experiences of both myself and my family. First, with me. I have chemical sensitivities and was trying to find a hairdresser that could provide less toxic hair color. Henry was up to the task, and always open to trying different lines until we found just the right one. He was so patient with me, letting me borrow samples so I could take them to my doctor to get tested. We had a lot of fun over the years, with highlights/purple pop color, and always red. Finding a red that lasts isn't easy, but Henry has that dialed in, too, along with natural, non-toxic support products and in-salon conditioning treatments. I've included some pictures of my styles over the years. As of 2020, I'm about 40% gray, and the color still works great! Henry offers a non-toxic root touchup (picture a big eye shadow container with a brush) that I use in between appointments, and it works great! Henry is so caring, sensitive to my needs, a great listener and a very talented colorist. In 2017 my daughter wanted to donate her hair to cancer patients. As you can imagine, after growing her hair for 10 years, this was a little bit of a stressful event. Of course, Henry made it all fun and was very kind to her. In between the COVID shut downs I got my fiancé in to see Henry. Wow, we both agree it's the best haircut he's ever had in his life! Thank you Henry for taking care of me, my family, and my friends. We look forward to seeing you again at the next reopening! read more

Henry Calcagno Design Studios - Hair Salons Near Me - Walnut Creek, California

I made an appointment with Henry after researching curly hair specialists in Walnut Creek. I have been embracing my natural curls for a couple of years now, but had not found someone who was able to cut my hair the way I wanted, or could replicate pictures of hairstyles I provided. Henry's reviews were excellent so I decided to make an appointment, and I'm so happy I did.  He listened to what I said I wanted, and understood immediately because he had the same vision for my hair.   He cuts curly hair dry, doesn't cut straight lines, instead works with each curl to truly sculpt the structure of my hair.  I'm passing along his info to a couple of other curly girls I know who haven't had much success in finding someone who truly understands the art of cutting curls.  It IS an art.  And...as a bonus, he is a really nice and personable guy. I have an appointment next week for root color touch-up, and will update my review when that's done.  But as of today, I am one happy curly girl. read more

Made an appointment for my wife to see Henry and he took such great care of her that now my daughter see's him as well. I love it when the two most important women in my life are happy and Henry does just that. I highly recommend Henry to anyone. Thanks, Henry read more

I get asked often how I keep my curly hair looking so healthy. I do the work with proper diet and exercise but my busy lifestyle takes a toll on my hair. From the office to the gym to fit camps outside pretty much on a daily basis my hair is shocked so much by the atmosphere. Henry Calcagno has been taking care of my hair for almost a year now. He has amazing techniques to cut curly hair to make it healthy but still keep the length. I keep my hair really long because it is so curly. The time he spends on the hair shows you he really wants you to be pleased with the finished product and that he is proud of his work. The friendship however is the best thing that has come out of meeting Henry. He and his staff are always warm and inviting and happy to see you. Whether you have curly or straight, fine or course hair Henry can take care of your needs. Visit him and get an amazing experience! read more

Henry has been my hair stylist for over 25 years. I wouldn't think of seeing anyone else. Over the course of these many years, he has been at a few different locations in the Walnut Creek area, and I have followed him without hesitation. He's very good about keeping in touch with his clients with occasional mailings. Nothing obtrusive - just a simple postcard once or twice a year. He is an artist, an expert, an educator. He is a fantastic hair cutter. He always listens to me when I want to change my hair style and offers suggestions when necessary. He is also a wonderful colorist. I'm at "that age" when I need to cover up the grey, so of course Henry handles that for me. He uses this wonderful product that is so gentle on the hair and full of botanicals. He also does my highlights in an innovative and quick way that ends up looking great and yet completely natural. Thank you Henry for being the BEST hair stylist around! read more

Attention curly haired men and women! The answer to your frizzy, uncontrollable hair is Henry. I waited 30 years to find him. Don't wait any longer! I saw Henry about three weeks ago. I wanted to wait to write the review so I could see how my hair looked after some washes and life. He is amazing at what he does. I got my hair cut and colored by him and I couldn't be happier with my results. I used to drive over an hour to see a stylist in San Jose (who was also brilliant) but now I have found someone who is just as amazing and just ten minutes away! Also, Henry is funny, nice, professional and caring. I'm very impressed! read more

I'm a Michigander but have been working in Walnut Creek for 6 months. I'm so tired of having to return to Detroit for my haircuts that I decided to try someone with great Yelp reviews. WOW! Henry is more than a hair stylist! He's dynamic and full of charisma. He treated my hair like a blank canvas and created a work of art! I received immediate complements from my male colleagues, which is not a common occurrence. I absolutely love the funky look he gave me to match my personality and physique. I can't imagine someone as good at their craft as Henry, who I learned is sought out as a speaker across the country for salon schools. What will I do when I return permanently to Michigan?!! read more

At the risk of sounding repetitive, I must sing Henry's praises. Having gone years with the typical gel/spiked short mens hairstyle, I was ready for a change. So I endured the awkward task of growing out my hair, and after 6 months was in dire need of a quality haircut. This is where I introduce Henry. Beyond his great yelp reviews, his years of experience, training and awards are second to none. I went to him with a picture of the hairstyle that I wanted and he spent 20 mins asking me questions and assessing my hair's condition. He shared with me his take and ideas and waited for my approval to start. He used techniques that I had never experienced on mens hair before, and he did with extreme ease. Additionally, he recommended the proper products to keep my hair healthy, as well as the best styling techniques to ensure I can emulate the style at home. All in all, I have the highest regards for Henry, his skills and his professionalism. I will continue to see him for my haircuts, and I suggest that you do the same. read more

I was referred to Henry for haircolor and cut. I was having difficulty with my color and wanted a change in my haircut, something creative and updated. I met Henry for my appointment and was immediately charmed by not only his personality and the atmosphere of the salon, the fun and soothing music (your choice), but also ease in parking, and handling of my appointment. BUT ... most of all, I was thrilled with my haircolor which was beautiful, soft blond with low lights and the haircut was so much fun - edgy and sassy. I receive many compliments! Henry is not just a stylist, but an artist and I highly recommend him. read more

My girlfriend has been a client for years, and she has always had GREAT hair. I knew I wanted to chop my long hair, and I wanted someone who knew what they were doing to create a totally new look for me. So, I asked her who her stylist was, and made an appointment with Henry. He fit me in within a few days, and was unfazed when I asked him to chop a minimum of 10 inches. He cut off 12 inches in one fell swoop, and another 2-3" in sculpting my "do". I gave him no direction, and absolutely love what he did. He's an artist. read more

Henry completely changed my look with his fantastic hair cut and color. I have curly, frizzy hair that used to take me hours to flat iron and I would still end up with big hair. No More!. Henry's cut is so good that most days I just style with the blow dryer and off I go. It stays in place and I get so many compliments. People tell me I even look younger. So definately see Henry if you want a great hairdo. read more

I found Henry here on Yelp. And I couldn't agree more with the reviews. Henry worked magic on my hair. I spent 4.5 hours at his salon, getting my color fixed - more like gotten rid of - and new color applied. I make it sound simple, but it was a huge process. He basically removed my old colors - lots of different brown shades - and turned my hair into different shades/tones of brown with beautiful highlights. This is probably the most nontechnical way to describe it. It's really beautiful. There isn't a single person I know who doesn't love what he did with my hair. Obviously, I won't be going anywhere else. Also, Henry makes you feel at home in his salon. He plays good music, is great company, and likes to dance a bit while working! What a personality! This is a fun place to go to get your hair done, for whatever reason. But it's really a must-go if you need help fixing your problematic hair, like mine was. And yes, it does cost more. But in my view, it's money well spent. Thanks, Henry. You rock! read more

This review is long over do. I had my first hair cut with Henry on February 1, 2019. I connected with Henry through church. It had been about two years since my last hair cut. Henry is very passionate about what he does and talkative which I don't mind because I am an introvert who doesn't really enjoy even going to hair salons, pampering, etc. Henry is great at explaining what he is doing and why. I got a dry hair cut from him which was actually really cool because you can see the look coming together. My hair had much more movement, didn't lose much length (which was my preference and he was respectful of that) and looked and felt lighter. I have recommended Henry to a friend of mine who has curly hair and gets her hair colored, and have mentioned him to other friends looking to get a hair cut. The dry cut is the way to go. Although I haven't been back for another cut just yet, I know I will return at some point. read more

Henry in AMAZING! I have curly hair and over the years my curls have flattened, became super dry and frizzy. In just one visit my curls are coming back to life. Henry doesn't just treat your hair, he also explains what he's doing and what you should do when you get home. He's very informative and friendly. I will definitely be back soon read more

Why do I drive far (50 miles one way) every two months to get a haircut from Henry? The answer is simple. His haircut is so good that it makes me feel beautiful, confident, and happy. And I'm not the only one that drives that far. Three generations of family members, including my mom, daughter, sister, and spouses get their hair cut by him. We all have different haircuts, and they all look great! I first met Henry when he was styling my sister's hair for her upcoming wedding. My sister suggested I get my hair and my teenage daughter's hair styled. We've never been to a master stylist before, and we were used to OK haircuts from haircut places. When Henry cut our hair, it was a total transformation! We both started getting compliments - lots of compliments! Henry considered my bone structure, lifestyle, and wishes, and he created a gorgeous hairstyle. The hairstyle is feminine; lightweight; not too short or long; and easy to care for. It doesn't drag or elongate my face. In fact, it frames and highlights it. As I am a working professional, the hairstyle is perfect. As for my teenage daughter, she has long, silky, beautiful hair, and he cut it to a perfect length and feathered it. She looks good, and she knows it. My sister got a beautiful updo for her wedding, and my mom got her hair cut short and very stylish. Suffice it to say, we all looked the best we've ever looked at her wedding. The photos don't lie. To make a long story short, Henry is so good at what he does that we cannot get the same thing from anywhere else. So every two months, for years now, three generations from different cities converge at Henry's hair salon for our haircuts. We book the whole morning, and we get in line to get haircuts. Because my haircut always makes me feel spectacular and beautiful, I smile a lot. We all do. And I've come to the conclusion that life is short, and I'm worth it. So if you really want to get a haircut that's right for you and will make you feel special, go see Henry. He's worth it. read more

Henry's talent is just insane, he is so good at what he does! Every few months, my coworkers and I get together for a fun hair day at Henry's salon in Walnut Creek -- which is bit of a drive from Davis -- but worth every minute! The cuts are always beautiful and the atmosphere is so relaxed. He works his magic on my heavy long hair, and I cannot be happier with the results, every time! I can't wait to go back to Henry's as he knows exactly what my hair needs, without me having to ask. A veritable artist! read more

I have lauded Henri Calcagno before based on a multiplicity of ladies' comments I had heard concerning the quality of his Hair Designs. I have now witnessed it myself, together with 20 of my colleagues, with the transformation of an attractive young lady's long blond hairdo into a masterpiece of hair design that only a top hair-stylist craftsman can accomplish away from his own work place. Her beautiful blond straight hair was transformed into a graceful, sculptured work of art that enhanced the attractiveness of her pretty face. It rates best in my books! read more

Henry is a FABULOUS stylist and the best colorist you will ever find! He is professional and really understands and listens to how you want your hair styled and will offer suggestions. I walked out of the salon feeling terrific. By the way, If you are lucky to have Henry wash your hair, it is like having the best head massage ever! The staff at the salon are friendly and attentive. The salon is clean with a modern chic decor. If you love your hair and care about your hair, this is the place to go to! Henry never disappoints. Definitely recommend. read more

Henry can cut and Henry can color....better than most. I've been going to him for 15 years from about 1985 to 2000 when I moved out of state. I came back a few years ago and didn't want to drive 'down south' for a hair cut. So I tried a few other people- who just could not cut curly hair. I had enough 'not so good' cuts that I decided to make the drive south to see him. When I went to make an appointment I found out he had moved back to Walnut Creek - lucky me. Henry does more than cut your hair; he gives you a hair style that complements your face. The studio has easy access and parking. It is in a fun area. You can get your hair done, go have coffe or lunch and do a bit of shopping. I'm a happy girl. Thanks Henry. read more

When I read on yelp that this guy really knows how to cut hair, I was a bit skeptical. But even months after my haircut, I can't believe how cute my hair looks. (I don't use any styling products.) I am definitely going back to him when I'm ready for another cut. Great work! read more

I get my hair done my Hillary at Henry's salon. Hillary is the BEST!!! Everytime I go I come out feeling that my hair is so much more healthy and beautiful. She really listens to what you want and will always let you know what will work for your hair type. I don't go as often as I should to keep my hair color fresh but Hillary never makes me feel bad for waiting so long. The salon is always clean and fun to be in and they always use the best products out there. If you want a good cut, color or style go see Hillary. read more

I'm new to the area and found Henry's studio through Yelp -- after my initial experience, I can only agree 100% with the positive reviews and add my own 5-star rating. I had my hair cut/styled by Holly, who works side-by-side, and has trained with, Harry; I couldn't say enough good things about how well I was treated, how meticulously Holly worked and how pleased I was with the results (along with my wife, who isn't shy about expressing her opinion). Holly, like Henry, is an artist -- and whether you're getting a "regular" cut or need something more, the care and expertise Holly applies to your hair ensures you'll walk out of their studio a happy camper! Holly has earned my regular business -- I'll be back ... thanks H & H! read more

Best haircut I have ever had. I have Felicity curly hair. And Henry took one look at it and said "I want to play with this." And play he did. I kept all the length and body, yet somehow had a HUGE pile of hair on the floor. Washing my hair at home, I felt like I had a fraction of the amount of hair to deal with now. And folks NOTICED. "Wow, your hair looks great". From EVERYONE. It DOES look great! It has bounce and body and shine and OMG BEST HAIRCUT IN THE WORLD!!!!! So good that a friend visiting from out of town insisted on getting an appointment with Henry while she stayed with me. My cousin insisted on a haircut when she visited. I mean, really. Henry is a great guy and I always look forward to the magic performed at his salon. read more
