Galeries Lafayette Paris is absolutely breathtaking!…read more The gorgeous glass dome and ceilings are a showstopper all by themselves. Almost every designer you can think of is here, making this a must-see and a must-shop when visiting Paris. And it doesn't stop inside Galeries Lafayette--the entire surrounding area has stores for days! Lights, glitz, glamour, luxury, and fashion everywhere you turn. It reminded me of an upscale New York City 42nd Street, but with that beautiful Parisian elegance. Even if you're not planning to shop, go for the experience. There's so much to see, you could spend hours just walking around and taking it all in. Definitely one of my Paris must-visits!

While malls die all over America, retail still thrives in Paris. Exhibit A: Galeries Lafayette Haussmann. I've been to this department store a number of times over the years, and I both enjoy it and fear how completely it can suck up precious vacation hours. It's a fantastic place to shop, with a ton of well curated inventory spread out across multiple floors in multiple buildings. The main building features that beautiful domed ceiling, which manages to catch me by surprise every time I walk in. I haven't had the opportunity to shop for my own clothes here in a long time, but I've gotten some really great stuff on the children's floor, and discovered the souvenir section on my last visit, where I picked up some cool Paris Metro toy trains and magnets. We did somehow get stuck at Galeries Lafayette for over two hours and ended up skipping Notre-Dame, which might have been a better place to spend our last afternoon in Paris. But it was sale season, and my kids look super cute in their heavily discounted Petit Bateau. Galeries Lafayette is busy and sometimes overwhelming, but it's a wonderful department store. I wish we had something like it back home. I'd much rather shop there than fall for targeted ads on Instagram.

One of my friends wanted to go in to buy a plain black cardigan, which she was correct in thinking she would find, and we ended up spending like an hour shopping and browsing. The store was huge and well stocked, with tons of clothing and accessories, as well as an enormous pharmacy and cosmetics area. I thought about picking up some Caudalie and La Roche-Posay products, which were very cheap, but decided against it to avoid checking my bag going home. Joke was one me when I had to check it anyway, and barely made my flight because I hadn't accounted for that extra chunk of time. Buying a bunch of French skincare would've saved me a little bit of stress. I did get a French nasal spray on the recommendation of my friend who lives in Paris. I bought it for my perpetually congested husband, who was home watching the kids. It was the only souvenir I brought him from my trip (though I did get a Diptyque candle for the house), and I actually used it first when I caught a cold last month. I can at least attest that it worked quite well. The Monoprix was bustling, but check-out was easy and quick. I left with my nasal spray, and my friend did get her black cardigan. If you're looking to score some well priced French products, this place is definitely worth checking out. And if you're on the fence about that Caudalie Beauty Elixir, just go ahead and treat yourself.

Maybe it is the American in me, but this did not feel like any food court I have seen back home. There are only four stalls in total. Joe and The Juice, Pierre Marcolini, Yi The, and one more I did not catch. My son ordered the L'Amore (strawberry, raspberry blueberry tea) from Yi The. The juice was decent and I was very pleased to see they used fresh ingredients, but not every drink works with boba. This was one of those times where it just did not. My husband also bought a bottle of coke, which cost 3.50 euro, which is very expensive for any food Court standards Next door, we got our first macarons of the trip from Pierre Marcolini. We tried the Dubai macaron, the signature one, the Noisette, and the most delicious of them all, the Framboise. They were all delicious and not too sweet, which I really appreciated. I loved every bite, but my favorites were the raspberry macaron with dark chocolate filling and the hazelnut one called Noisette. It was definitely worth the stop.

I was little disappointed once inside as it wasn't quite as magical as expected, but it's a shopping area, so what do you expect. The biggest disappointment is that you have to pay to use the restrooms here. Ridiculous! I didn't have any cash and wasn't sure if I'd be able to use a card, so I had to leave. There was a long line of people trying to use the bathrooms, so they must make a nice chunk of change from this. But quite stressful when you would expect a restroom especially for how large this place is.

Jamie W and I made it a priority to visit Galeries Lafayette because of the famous Art Nouveau dome, which was indeed fabulous (review: https://yelp.to/XRXnKANd7b). We decided to visit Printemps as part of our rainy day itinerary because we figured it would be a good chunk of time where we could stay dry indoors. We were right, and the store was less crowded and easier to navigate than its direct competitor. We found ourselves at the charming Cafe Perche on the 7th floor, where we relaxed over rich 6,50€ Chocolate Chauds and delicious butter cookies (Photo 8). Afterward, we found ourselves on two different rooftop terraces, the first was a more contained space that provided immediate views of the area as well as the architectural detail. The second space was actually an entryway to a nice-looking restaurant (Le Picnic) but still provided glorious panoramic views for freeloaders like us. One floor down was an upscale food hall. Printemos has its own Art Deco-style dome, but it doesn't have the grandeur of Galeries Lafayette (Photo 5). However, if you are a serious shopper of luxury goods, I'd come here first to avoid the tourist stampede down the boulevard. RELATED - Exploring Paris? The iron-and-glass atrium is beautiful, the scale feels wonderfully manageable, and the selection of fashion, design, and home brands carries a point of view that could only come from Paris. Harrods occasionally comes to mind as a comparison, although the resemblance ends quickly: Le Bon Marché is quieter, smaller, and far more Left Bank in its sensibility. Upstairs and throughout the store, browsing is genuinely fun, and I still remember visiting when there was a Williamsburg, Brooklyn-themed activation that offered an unexpectedly charming French interpretation of the neighborhood and its culture. La Grande Épicerie, however, may be the masterpiece: an astonishing food hall where the presentation, abundance, and sheer discernment make grocery shopping feel almost museum-worthy. At a moment when e-commerce has hollowed out so many great department stores, Le Bon Marché feels increasingly special, proof that physical retail can still justify the trip simply through taste, atmosphere, and discovery.
