I believe the staff here truly cares about animals and helping within the community. I have seen their facility and it is clean. The animals have appropriate accommodations and I recently was interested in adopting a cat or two and was able to meet several. Wish I could take them all. They also work with the Lawrence Humane Society which is another great place. I encourage the public to consider making online donations to help this place as they run on public funding. As a former volunteer and having worked in the animal care field for over 17 years, these jobs are hard work. Being able to provide vet care, food, bedding, etc for many animals in need isn't easy. I contacted the intake department to see if they had chihuahua's for adoption and of course they had a couple available. Not only do I have an application online pre filled with them but I also have one I filled out in person prior this phone call. The intake department basically lied... they have plenty of loud pit bulls or very large mixed breeds but no chihuahuas. Do not waste your time because more than likely the animal you are interested in is held for a friend or family member. read more

I went to their Health Center. The staff were kind and professional. My cats have never come back afraid after vaccines or surgery. In fact, after being neutered, they seemed happier than when I originally brought them. All instructions are very clear and their staff will answer your questions easily. We went in for their $15 Microchip Special which is going until 7/3. You do need to call and make an appointment, I called on Monday left a voice message and received a call back later that night. I am not sure if the lady who took my information wrote my name down wrong but they did not have me down. The lady at the desk was nice and went ahead and got us in to get Hershel microchipped. You fill in your information and then they register your pet for you while you're there. Another lady came out and got Hershel, took him back which did not take long. Breadstick - 134131, a kitten does not have a home tonight. Not because I did not want her, rather I asked a wrong question regarding declawing because our current cat had no front claws when we took her in. Then I was told making a decision on what was on their website - picture and the shelters comments regarding the animal was not allowed! I asked to see Breadstick, and I was denied. I was denied any cats, the rep turned away and would no longer talk to me, she said, "We're done!" So the public can be reassured, I followed up with the person in charge. After explaining what happened, I was assured the person I was talking too would have a talk with the employee that was so rude! Anyone reading this I hope you will check Breadstick out and find she is a good addition to your family. This organization is Nationwide. The work they do for our Country is vital. We have adopted several dogs over the past years. Helping Hands is always helpful, screens adopters, and has an in-house medical center to treat all animals and spays or neuters every animal before allowing them to adopt out. They have a wonderful facility endorsed by several professional animal affiliated organizations. Well let me start off by saying that I am an animal lover and have been one every since I was a small child. My first pet ever in life was a small kitten that we named peaches and she literally grew up with me and my brother. This sparked a love for animals that I've always had. I was on work related business regarding my presence in this facility therefore I cannot speak on what the event was or pretty much anything else I'll just speak about how I was treated while I was there. I did walk to the area where it was a play room for cats. I was looking in the window and saw a cat that was just watching my every move. I wanted to go in and investigate more and play with this cat when the guy who told me that I would have to fill out an application to adopt just to be able to go in. I found this kind of strange considering first of all I was there for an event that had absolutely nothing to do with actual pet adoption. Second I hadn't expressed that I was interested in adopting but that I wanted to test the waters with a certain cat in case I was thinking about it. But to be stopped at the gate before I could even get in and told to fill out the paper for adoption before I could even go in, it kind of put me off a little bit. What's worse is when I looked at the adoption paper it was almost like I was buying a home due to all of the personal information that they wanted about me. I felt that the information needed for someone to bring a loving pet into their home was a little too intrusive. You do not need to know my credit history my financial background in order for me to be a good parent to a fur baby. I already have a fur baby, so I was looking for friend possibly through the cat I saw but due to the intrusive nature of looking for adoptees I kind of lost interest. Some may even say that the paper is customary for businesses such as this, but I cannot concur. The event however went nice and if you're looking for adopting a pet and you don't mind your business being all on paper to do so then by all means this place is for you. Also the many different people who were volunteers and brought their pets in were very nice and accommodating to us visitors. I actually saw a hairless guinea pig for the first time. my husband and I adopted a dog from here and the dog is great so after my daughter seen our dog she wanted to go and look to see if she possibly wanted either a cat or dog. After filling out the app and looking at both the cat and dogs and even had one picked out they told her because she already has a cat and lives in Meadowood that they could not adopt to her because they have a one pet policy. when I first moved in there I had 2 cats and a dog. and several other people have more than one animal. so she tried calling and they were closed so now if she wants a cat she has to pay full price instead of the 10 price . will not adopt from them again read more

After today I will no longer support the HHHS in Topeka. When you have an emergent situation you should not have to choose between having a place to live or having your dog euthanized. When the animal shelter requires that you plan two weeks in advance for emergencies they really don't have the compassion they claim to have. read more

HUMANE?! I think not. Unless you want your animal to be euthanized, don't take them here, don't donate, don't give them money, nothing. Don't adopt. Go somewhere else where 1. It won't cost an arm and a leg 2. They don't kill animals and 3. They're not rude when you talk to them. Not only were they EXTREMELY unhelpful but they were EXTREMELY rude and unruly. Went in there with the great intention of giving a dog a new home with a new opportunity at life with someone who can take care of them. I have already taken on dog in and felt it was time to help another so as I went through the process this time I was told a lot of different things about laws and how to take care of a dog and who can and can not have a dog. The problem is no of this is actual fact but all opinions. I have always had a great appreciation for the work shelters try to do and try to help with adoption but the last two days something has changed at this location. The team I dealt with seemed more into helping be judgmental and full of untruths than the job at hand which is trying to place animals with people that can and want to make a difference for these animals. It was shameful to see the way they acted very unprofessional and very disrespectful. Wichita and the surrounding communities to the south have very professional personnel and love to try to help adopt pets to responsible adults. This whole group from Michelle down need to be retrained and possibly dismissed. Seems the goal is to navigate some hidden agenda than to place animals in caring, loving homes. read more

I volunteer here and it's a great atmosphere in a working manner. The animals are well taken care of and looked after by staff. However, on the adoption side of this, the adoption counselors are not well trained in handling the animals. The kennel techs, vet techs, and even volunteers are well trained before we can even touch the animals at this shelter. The adoption counselors seem like they never received this. I have seen many things, including them doing a cat test with the dogs to see if they're compatible where they chose an upset cat that they upset. They dumped the cat out of the carrier making it even more upset. The cat ended up hitting the dog and hurting her before they had trouble getting the cat back in a carrier. Overall, this is a great work environment, but not necessarily somewhere that I would like to adopt from. read more

November my husband and I went to The Topeka Humane Society. We met with a counselor. The cat Zoey had been there for awhile and would be a great match. Zoey, is an 7 month old Tabby and weighs 6.8 pounds. In the meet and greet room. Zoey was brought in to meet us. Her skin was so thin all we could see is bones. I picked her up and had set her back down immediately in fear she was going to break. I think she has worms. Her stomach was sunk in. We have 4 cats at home and cannot take a chance of getting them sick. I had to leave Zoey there. I was crushed. Horrified and heartbroken. Didn't anyone care? I called the counselor to tell them about Zoey and how sad it was for Zoey to suffer. I was told they don't have the funding to run proper test Just a couple of days later I got Covid. After quarantine I noticed Zoey was still up for adoption. I could not let Zoey be ignored. We adopted her. At our vet She 5.5 pounds and running a fever. It's been a week since Antibiotic a deworming shot, quarantine, plenty of water and food our Zoey is so much better! I left a message at the shelter to tell them that Zoey was contagious and other cats have been exposed. Only response we got was "ok". No concern was addressed at all. All the animals are well kept we got a dog named Sophie the 3 year ago and when we moved she had to be regimes because she kept running away. Doing her bisness in the house and she kept getting on the furniture we had trained her and had taken her to a professional and she still did everything so we found her a new home I was as but we couldn't take care of her she lived out side before we got her so that's probably why . I feel like they could do a better job at training the animals. Helping Hands Humane Society is such a great asset to the area and, more importantly, to the many animals who find themselves homeless. I've adopted both a dog and a cat from them, and have volunteered for the shelter for many years. The staff is dedicated and is really passionate about the care, health and happiness of each animal. They work hard to make sure the animal and adopter is going to be a good match. In addition, HHHS offers benefits to the community with their many educational programs. They even do volunteer visiting pet therapy to local care facilities, have regular and agility training programs available to the public and their dogs, and have a barn cat program for kitties who aren't socialized to humans. provide periodic special low-cost access to rabies shots, microchipping, etc. HHHS Is an open admission shelter and has the animal control contract for the city and county. While they are not (yet, anyway) a no-kill shelter, it is my understanding that they only euthanize for severe health reasons (the animal has no acceptable quality of life and no real hope of improvement) or extreme behavioral issues with, again, no hope of improvement. My family and I adopted a cat from Helping Hands about five years ago and he has been the most wonderful addition to our family. We recently decided our 10-month old husky mix puppy needed a playmate sibling, so we went back to Helping Hands to find a pup. The staff were really wonderful for the whole process. I found a dog (husky/shepherd mix) on on their website that sounded wonderful and called to see that he was available. We completed an application, came in to met him and fell in love. The adoption counselor gave us time to play with him but was also close by in case there were any issues. She explained a "cat test," where they bring a cat in a pet taxi in the room to see how the dog responds. It keeps the cat safe but allows us to see how the dog might behave with our cat at home. She explained everything before she did it. We were able to put a hold on our pup until the next day when we could bring in our dog from home so they could meet. The next day when they opened, my husband and I brought in our pup to meet the new dog. THREE staff ladies helped with this. As busy as they were on a Saturday right when they opened, three staff helped to make sure the dogs were safe, that we were comfortable, and to ensure it was a good match. They had the dogs start in a small space, smell each other, on leashes, then gradually allowed them more space until eventually they could run and play together. They talked with us about what to expect when we went home, how to get them used to each other, how to handle jealousy issues, etc. We have had our new dog, Jake, for almost three weeks and he is wonderful addition to our family. I felt very supported for the whole adoption process and I was very impressed with the knowledge and professionalism of the adoption counselors. They took their time to ensure our whole family felt safe and comfortable with adding Jake to our family and to be sure he was the right fit for us. I would recommend Helping Hands to anyone looking for a family dog, especially if you have young kids. Not all dogs are a good fit for young kids for sure, but the staff are very knowledgeable of dogs that would be and can point you in the right direction to find the perfect furry family member! read more

We absolutely love HHHS. They are so knowledge and helpful and they truly care for their animals. We have found a lot of places do not do nearly the amount of work to make finding the perfect animal for your family. We love that you can walk in and meet a pet after filling out the application. They don't pressure you to make a decision like some places. They give you time with the pet and as much information as possible. They truly take the time to work with each animal to get to know them and do different temperament tests which I have found almost no other shelters do. We have adopted 3 dogs from HHHS all of which we still have in our care. They are absolutely the best dogs ever. We have looked at other shelters to find a 4th dog because we are being picky because 4 dogs is definitely are max so we want to make sure we pick the right dog. We've been all over the state looking for the right dog and no shelter is as clean, organized and as friendly as HHHS. read more

Went in today to talk to someone about a stray cat we have been having around our house and our neighbors. Ask about bringing it in since neither the neighbors or myself wanted the cat(theirs for a health reason and ours for allergy reasons), but didn't want it left out in the cold since it's getting below freezing at night. She said animal control wouldn't come out this time of year so she sent an animal carrier home with me so I could bring the cat back. She asked a few questions and then I left. After a while of trying to get the cat in the crate was finally able to get it in their and go back out the shelter. The second trip out there, there was a different lady working. This one was very rude. Told her I had been in earlier and talked to someone about bringing in a stray and that she had giving me a crate to use and the girl kept telling me it wasn't one of theirs (it was) and that she had never seen it before. She then went on to ask my name and looked it up. (Yes I had got a kitten from there a few years ago and had to return it because of an allergy.i didn't release into the wild i returned it so they could rehome it) and when she had my info on screen she made a rude ooh sound. And then started getting a lot ruder towards me. She asked where I found the cat and I gave her my address and said no I need cross streets. I gave them and then she asked me to turn to crate around so she could see the cat, and continued to say that the crate wasn't theirs. Once again I told her it was and it was what I was given when I was here a few hours before. At this point I was almost ready to be rude back because I don't like being called a liar or being made to feel like one. Anyways long story short if there would have been another option of where to take the cat I would have. This one worker was extremely rude and I feel sorry for anybody else trying to do the right thing in helping an animal that has to deal with her. But no one deserves to be made to feel like a liar when they're just trying to help an animal. read more

One of our 2 cats came from Helping Hands. The adoption process was quick and staff was excellent. My only gripe was instead of letting us walk out with the cat after paying the adoption fee, we were charged $5 to put the cat in a cardboard box to carry him out. Was not told that there would be an extra charge. Personally, it's a silly, and slightly pointless fee. If your animal is all over the place and wanting to scurry around, it makes sense. Unfortunately, a heads up that there is a $5 fee would have been nice. It's also a waste since the box was used to about 15 seconds until we got to the car and tossed it in the recycling when we got home. Don't nickel and dime people that are adopting cause it may push them away or even motivate them to buy from a breeder instead! read more

We have been searching for another fur-buddy to join our family. Happened to stumble upon a perfectly, sweet looking young guy. We called several times to make sure he was still available (as it's first come first serve with the animals). We made it to HHHS and he was PERFECT! We brought our entire family to meet with him and it was love at first sight. The entire staff from the time we entered the facility until we left were super helpful and friendly. They have a very affordable gift shop and their adoption fees are extremely cheap -- which means they likely need a lot of donations to help care for all their animals. Visited today to get 2 kittens. Filled out application and stated kittens would join our 4 other cats in our barn. We found a couple of kittens that were 2 months old, then after 2+ hours of waiting we were able to discuss with HS representative. She proceeded to talk down to us, took form to others, pointed to us and after a lot of whispering etc. the rep came back and said we were denied because barn cats need to be at least 4 months old. I think HS's policy should be stated at the front end of the process. Furthermore, it's humiliating to be treated like trash. read more

They first loaned us a crate to bring back a stray in and when we got back, the second girl kept saying it wasn't one of their crates. Don't like being told I was lying. Went in to visit and give some love to abandoned dogs and cats. The woman at the front desk was rude and not of help. It seemed like she had an attitude with us because we just wanted to play with the animals and not adopt. I don't have enough money or time for a new addition to the family right now and I figured that they would let us give some love to animals in need, boy was I wrong. In my opinion shouldn't an establishment such as this promote love a friendship to animals? Seems backwards to me. read more

This place sucks. I went here with my friend to turn in a stray dog we found and the entire time the workers were extremely rude to us, talked down to us, and straight up glared at us. It really sucks that we cared more about the poor little animal than the workers themselves. read more
