My family and I have been seeing Dr. Mark Helmus off and on (depending on insurance) probably for about 2 decades. We are so glad to be back with them for the past few years. We would give him and his staff the highest recommendation possible. We are so impressed with the eye exams, as it seems as if the latest equipment is used, which makes eye exams so quick and easy, but most importantly, trustworthy. This office is very professional and values their patients business. They are friendly and they go out of their way to help you. At my last appointment I decided to get new lenses for my glasses and not contacts. They did not therefore fit me for contacts. But after the appointment when I was doing the paperwork for ordering lenses I realized i would have to turn my glasses over and did not have a pair of contacts with me (oops!) They gave me a pair of contacts so I could see to drive home. I have seen Julie helmus and Alex baker and both were excellent. read more

Finding Lisa, one of the opticians at Helmus, was a tremendous good luck that just keeps giving. My wife is a very picky customer. She was dragging me to optical shops trying to find the right frame for over a year. Lisa, with her patience, charm, easygoing personality, and, most importantly, her amazing knowledge of everything related to eyeglasses and eye care finally settled my wife with the glasses she needs and likes. And, even though I got my glasses from her a year or so ago, I still return to her to readjust my glasses so they sit on my face as perfectly as when I got them first. I love this place. The doctors are so good and friendly. They know how to deal with kids. My son got a prescription for glasses by a different place but I was not convinced. While I would agree with the reviews that the reception is friendly, their customer service and follow through is horrid! I requested that they call me when the new line and catalogue of a specific brand arrived. They never called. When I called and left a message with a receptionist to see if they had come in, I didn't receive a call back. I finally stopped in to see if the catalogue and new frames had arrived, they had. I picked a pair of frames to be ordered (at a $10 charge - not a problem) to look at the color I selected. I paid the $10 but the frames were not ordered and I of course was never called. After going to the office, they finally ordered the frames. When the frames finally arrived, the other frame that I had wanted to compare them to had been sold. Okay, understandable, but one would have thought they would have given me a heads up that the other frame would likely not be there. I just gave up an ordered the lenses for the frame, clearly I should have given up earlier. When the frames weren't ready on time, and they failed to call me to let me know - I finally canceled the order. At this point I figured I'd rather build a relationship with place and it wasn't going to be Helmus. read more

I've been here three times and while the staff is mostly very friendly and helpful I have had bad experiences with Dr. Joann Helmus. While she was very friendly and talkative on my second visit, both the first and third were very unpleasant. On both occasion she has walked into the room in a noticeably bad mood and then taken it out in the patient. Today I had a 9:30 appointment and didn't even get taken into the office until 9:55. There was no apology for the nearly 30 min wait. I was coming in because my new glasses were giving me trouble. She was obviously annoyed and made it seem as though I had done something wrong. Although I had come in on 2 separate occasions and talked to the staff about the issue, on the last visit the staff member had taken my glasses. Dr. Helmus seemed mad at me that her staff took the glasses. "Why? Why would they take your glasses?" She asked. How should I know, it's her staff. I was told to give them my glasses and to setup an appointment with her. I did exactly as her staff asked. I finally said to her, "I don't understand what the problem is." At this point she dialed down the attitude. It turns out she gave me the wrong prescription, again, no apology. I will be scheduling my future appointments with a different doctor. read more

I got a gift card for free glasses so I decided to go to this place for the first time after reading the reviews. On my first day there, I waited at the front desk waiting for someone to help me. There were employees walking around and looking at me but no one approached me to offer help! I didn't think much of it and just assumed they were busy with other stuff. After awhile, someone finally helped me. When it was time to find glasses, the Asian employee was to help me look at glasses that were in the price range of the free glasses. She was NOT helpful at all! She rushed me and tried to make me get glasses that wasn't to my liking by telling me it looked great on me when she barely looked at me wearing the glasses. The second time I went to this place (which was earlier today), I walked up to the front desk. There were TWO workers there just staring at me as I walked up. They did not greet me or ask if I needed help!! They look at me with blank stares as if I was at the wrong place or as if they were disgusted by me! They did not speak or say hi at all and it was me who had to talk to them to get their attention!!! It was then that I realized I DID NOT APPRECIATE THEIR FRONT DESK SERVICE/NOR THEIR SERVICE IN GENERAL (besides Dr. Baker who was very nice during our first meeting)! I WILL NOT return to this place nor recommend it to my family and friends! read more

Doctor is OK. But the attitude of assistants are bad and rude, TERRIBLE! First of all the lens are too strong, I wanted to change that. She said it's unable to change. I skipped her and asked the doctor, she said it's ok to change. However the second time still feel uncomfortable which I never have the situation before. I required to change, but the assistant said I can't change anymore. Even I want to read my file, she said: it's our files, you can't read. But actually those files belongs to me, of course I could read those, she just want to be RUDE. She said I had to take the glasses back and keep using them for a week long, then I was able to change or do anything different. But the glasses is so uncomfortable, and blur, and I even could not open my eyes with that!! This is the third time to pick up the class, still very blur. But as I said, I would not go to this store anymore, not only because of the quality of product, but also the services. If I can give 0 star, I would do that. read more

I had high expectation of this place since all the reviews I read before going was so positive (including on Daviswiki). The eye exam and obtaining the prescription seemed standard enough until I tried the contacts lenses on. With the new prescription, I had trouble seeing comfortably (I am a veteran contact lens wearer), and wanted further assistance. However it took the office very long time to respond (dragged on and off for a month or more), and when they did respond, it was of little help. I had been stuck with wearing lenses that were not comfortable for the last two years. Overall my impression of the place is that once they get your money and send you out of the door, it is very unlikely for them to help you to find out what's wrong and correct the problem if you have trouble with the prescription. If your prescription is not the best, you are stuck with it and left miserable. I will not recommend Joann Helmus's service to anyone. read more
