My family moved to the Davis area one year ago, so I just completed my second annual eye exam with Dr. Helmus. The things I think are important in an optometry office are 1) easy to get an appointment 2) a friendly, welcoming staff 3) respectful doctor who doesn't rush through your exam and gets to know you 4) contacts that are in stock. This place has it all! They even offered to fix my sunglasses which I didn't purchase at their store. read more

You won't find a more knowledgeable staff in Davis when it comes to eye care and eyewear. Have been a patient of Dr. Mark's for over 10 years. I have a really powerful contact prescription and my contacts are always in stock :) Marissa is the best when it comes to picking out the right eyeglass frame and is very knowledgeable regarding insurance. There is a wide selection of eyeglass brands to choose from on site. read more

I received an eye examination from "Dr. Joann". I found her and her staff to be efficient, professional and friendly. I recommended her to my wife, and will to friends as well. read more

Dr Julie is efficient and professional. She conducts the exam skillfully and explains all of the results in an easy to understand manner. The entire staff is also professional. I am so glad I found her. Her manner and way to treating patients is the way all doctors should be. read more

Great Staff & MD's w/convenient location. This was my first visit to Helmus+Baker. Office staff was very pleasant. They offer online appt scheduling and were very prompt to call me and confirm. The offer a good range of hours so worked perfect for me as I had to schedule after 3PM. Dr. Baker is a quieter guy, but was very friendly and genuinely personable. During the eyeglass consultation, the technician was very informative, (maybe too much as she kept verifying that I understood the charges each feature added, which I took as odd but would rather she make sure I understand than assume I was ok with it). But anyway, overall a great place to go for an exam and fitting. I have read very few negative reviews on here and most fall in either two categories: 1) people who don't understand how insurance works and blame the provider, or 2) people that expect the provider to do what ever they want with no regard to ethics or legalities. read more

Really fantastic service! So glad I switched from Dr. Miller, what a breath of fresh air after my past few experiences! We were seen right away even though we arrived early. Retinal photos are the bomb... no dilated pupils to ruin the rest of the day. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. read more

Our whole family see's all the doctors in the Helmus & Baker optometry office. We have been quickly taken care of with eye infection ailments and with general eye exam and glasses help. Everyone in their office is thorough and very knowledgeable on how a patient can get the most from their eye care insurance coverage to take care of their sight for life. Highly recommend any of the Doctors in this office. (Though a little bit more biased to have Doctor Joann as she has been a great friend outside the office for over 14 yrs!) read more

I've been going to Dr. Mark Helmus for about 10 years now and using VSP insurance. He has a decent selection of designer frames, but I feel like they all start at $100, and quickly go up from there. The staff there are relatively nice, courteous and attentive, but sometimes they can be chatty with each other and I always feel like I'm interrupting their casual (not work related) conversation. I only had trouble with one technician who over-stepped the boundaries of helpfulness when she made an assumption on my order. I asked for "the thinnest lenses possible, like my previous lenses". She said sure, completed the order, and when they were ready the next week, I found that the lenses were much thicker, to the point that I could not close the earpieces. I didn't want to be a bother, so I decided to try them out over the weekend. They were intolerable. When I went in to complain, a different tech assisted me. She found that my previous lenses were aspheric plus the thinnest polycarbonate available, and that my new lenses lacked the aspheric component. Thankfully insurance allows for one re-do. But if the first tech has just listened to me and honored my request instead of assuming I couldn't afford what I was requesting, it would have saved a lot of frustration and wasted time. On average I spend about $400 on one pair of glasses every two years. The tech should have discussed my options, and not made assumptions that differ from my request. Dr. Mark Helmus is a thorough, friendly, and professional eye doctor. He is very good at discussing my concerns about my eye health. read more

Dr. Julie Helmus is great! Very glad I came here! I needed a last-minute optometrist to get an eye exam and order new contact lenses. I normally go to the same practice every year, but didn't have time to make the drive back to the Bay Area. I set up an appointment the same week, with Dr. Julie Helmus. I was worried at first because I could find no reviews on Dr. Julie and was told by the receptionist that she was new. She has only been working at the practice since July 2015. As uptight as it sounds, I make it a point to only go to the best; I was nervous to accept the appointment. Desperate, I took the leap because of the practice's rating on Yelp. I'm glad I took a chance :). Dr. Julie Helmus was extremely friendly, professional, knowledgable, and relatable. I am surprised she doesn't have any reviews here yet. So I do urge you to make an appointment with her. She is just establishing herself, and she is very talented at what she does. If I stay in the Sacramento area I will make it a point to come back to this practice and ask for her specifically. read more

You can't go wrong with any of the doctors at Helmus and Baker Optometry! I have seen most of the docs and always get top notch service. I recently saw Dr. Julie Helmus and was very impressed. She took the extra time with me to resolve some issues I was having. Dr. Julie is the youngest doc and very bright, knowledgeable, professional and super friendly and easy to approach. I would highly recommend Helmus and Baker to anyone! read more

Have been seeing Dr. Baker for 5 years now, and I always look forward to the yearly checkups. Everyone is very friendly, professional, and welcoming. I highly recommend this business! read more

Got an email that my glasses arrived on April 1st, so it took only about a week as opposed to a month. When I picked them up (close two weeks later), Lisa adjusted my new and old specs to fit perfectly. They're fast, personable, and professional. At the end of my visit today, Lisa gave me a thank you card that I could also use to tell my friends about the place, so to my fellow vision impaired, I highly recommend Helmus Optometry. read more

I have been a patient at Helmus & Helmus for almost 15 years - primarily with Dr. Mark. He is the best! They have state of the art equipment (at least from what I can tell) which make the process painless and quick. The members of the staff are always very friendly and helpful. I am pretty picky when it comes to purchasing my frames and they always take the time to help me as I weigh all my options. In the end, I am always completely satisfied with my selection (thanks in no small part to their constructive feedback) and look forward to next year so I can pick another pair! read more

They are really great! I love their selection of frames. They're all pretty stylish and they have them ranging in price from expensive name brands to the inexpensive (meaning insurance can cover the total cost). Technician April was a pleasure to chat with and ask questions during the selection process and she didn't over assertively try to sell me things with the glasses I didn't want (like the antiglare). And the Dr I saw was really sweet and took time to discuss my various life ventures and tell me a bit about herself, too! I'll be going back! read more

Fantastic service. I had an eye care emergency, and the staff took the time to help me, free of charge. Highly recommend

I am a first-time patient here at Helmus + Baker, as well as a first-time optometry patient, and I really appreciated the organized office staff and thorough doctors (I was seen by Dr. Mark Helmus). I would (will!) go back! In addition to the great staff and doctors, I love the aesthetics of their office. It is light, bright, and well designed! read more

Overall great service from the staff members. Good glasses selection. My son's glasses prescription were to strong but they checked his eyes again and redid his glasses to lower prescription. Whole family of 5 are seen at this office and are happy with both doctor Helmus and Baker. read more

I have been seeing Dr.Mark Helmus and more recently Dr. Baker. I enjoy going to see them and they do such a great job. I've been seeing Dr. Baker for years and he is awesome! The staff here are very friendly and responsive. I will continue to go here for any future eye appointments. read more

Helmus and Baker is unquestionably the best optometry practice I've been to over the years. Dr. Julie was friendly, knowledgeable, and displayed a genuine concern for me as a patient. I really appreciated how she took the time to make sure I had all my questions answered and helped me understand my choices. The office itself is beautiful and bright, and the selection of glasses seemed better than most places I've been. The staff, too, was wonderful. Not only helpful, but also efficient - I spent hardly any time waiting. Overall a great experience, and highly recommended! read more

Have been seen by Dr Mark for 20+ years and love this practice! I travel from Concord, about 60miles to still go here. I am usually on time but admit I have been late once or twice when Bay Area traffic is terrible in the afternoon and when I call and think they will not see me, they tell me to get there when I can and though I may have to wait, they will squeeze me in. Love that it is a family business. Dr Mark was first to introduce me to contact lenses and Dr Julie, his daughter, showed just as much compassion with caring about how much I wear my contacts and gave some great advice, not a lecture. read more

Great staff and fast service! I started going there last year and went back this year. I got glasses this time, and they arrived within one week. Jessica was extremely helpful both when I was picking my frames and when I had to get them adjusted. read more

Fantastic staff. Julie Helmus was friendly, knowledgeable about my rare disease, and answered all of my questions. The appointment was fun and was more like catching up with an old friend than introducing yourself to a doctor. I was fitted with contacts and she was very careful not to discomfort me in the process. The rest of the staff were wonderful too. Overall, a great experience. read more

Last week's eye exam went really smoothly for me. Dr. Mark was really polite and informative. The optician, Jua (spelling?), was super helpful. She was very attentive, professional, and was really committed to helping me find the perfect pair of glasses. I really appreciated how personable she was and how comfortable she made me since I always feel awkward trying on glasses in front of people!!! read more

I've been coming here for years and am always more than satisfied. Not disappointed again this week. Thanks

I have been going to see Dr. Mark for over 20 years, and I have received nothing but excellent care and advice from both him and Dr. Joann. The other admin staff and technicians are professional, knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. When choosing frames, they have spent as much time with me as needed, and if I need an adjustment on any glasses I have purchased from them, I only need to drop in and have it done. They take care of billing insurance, so I don't have to think about it, and they are very clear when going through the bill with me regarding coverage and total cost. I will continue to see Dr. Mark until he is no longer in business! read more

I've been seeing Helmus & Baker for at least 5 years, even when I moved to the east coast for a couple years I would make sure to get my H&B exam in when I visited home in CA. They have a very organized appointment flow and the doctors are cool people. I always have a good chat with them. They also have a few parking spaces (I can usually find a free 2-hour spot in downtown Davis, anyway). This is definitely the best optometry office around. read more

I've been going here for years. The staff are always friendly and efficient. Dr. Baker takes good care of my eyes, listening to my concerns and explaining the changes my eyes are going through.
