I got my road bike tuned up here about a month ago and all I would say is I would go somewhere else. For starters, they told me it would cost roughly $130 and then it ended up being $200 which was shocking, and as I've been riding my bike around I noticed that there's a clicking sound that wasn't happening prior. Also, my chain has been dropped three times since getting my bike back and it never did that before. Just my 2 cents... but when you tell people that you don't want their business because they bring in an E-bike to be serviced, you might be turning away a lot of potential customers. I'm sorry, I thought this was a cyclery shop? I came into the shop to get my derailleur fixed, brakes bled, and tubeless tires put on. The owner of this shop denied me service only after seeing my e-bike. Glad he helped narrow down my bike shop selection going forward. I've brought in wheels for tubeless conversion, bought a single speed, pedals, a full suspension mtb, and had my bike trainer fixed. So this review will cover all of those. This shop is great. I've met about 4 different employees and everyone is knowledge and friendly. I have wanted some things rushed and others I didn't have a time frame, and Hellgate delivered every single time. I personally like that they carry smaller brands Fuji and Salsa and have enjoyed riding said bicycles. When ordering the employee went through the options while I looked at the screen with them, knowing I got the fair and right price. No gimmicks. No silliness. Proud to have the sticker "Hellgate Cyclery" on my bike. read more

I look for three things in a bike shop: - fast - inexpensive (or at the very least, reasonable) - unpretentious This place filled those three requirements. The guys were amiable, didn't scoff at my dinky little road bike, and fixed my apparent death machine for a measly $11 (I suppose my old shop was filled with over-charging joiks because that is dirt cheap compared to what I'm used to). It's a no-frills kind of shop but they've created a surprisingly welcoming atmosphere. I hope my bike doesn't need work for a while, but if and when that time comes, I'm going back there. read more

Without a doubt, this is the best shop I've ever been to. I've done two 2500+ mile tours and been to at least 15 shops in a dozen states but have never had as good of an experience. This is a small shop run by two master mechanics. There's a world of difference in having your bike serviced by professional men rather than the young dudes that the other shops sometimes employ. Hellgate Cyclery is also the best place to find a used bike. They take old bikes and do more than make them functional - they make old bikes fun to ride. read more

Customer service at its finest. I came through town on my cross country trip and had issues around my Schwalbe tires and my Brooks saddle. Dave, one of the owners, took time to listen to my concerns and gave me some great advice around both topics. He helped me patch a tear in the sidewall of my rear tire and adjust the angle of my saddle for a chance of making the rides more comfortable going forward. I'd recommend this place to all long distance tourers out there seeking quality service. Big thumbs up! read more

I view taking my bicycle to these guys as taking it for a spa treatment. I know it's money well spent, considering the shop doesn't carry excessive inventories or occupy a Higgins Ave storefront. I sleep better at night knowing that there are craftsman/owners out there who value quality service above all else. I'll disclose that I know Dave and Kevin, so I'm probably biased in some way. With that in mind, I'll list some empirical evidence to back my 5-star rating: -For service/repairs, appointments often require booking a week or so in advance. Well worth it. -It's just two guys, both owners. Owners take pride in their business. -They fill their free time with activities like traveling to Europe as team mechanics for cyclocross racing, which is about as demanding a job as bike mechanics can take. read more

I consigned a couple of bikes and a bike rack and felt as though I was treated fairly. However, last year I consigned my son's bike on a handshake (no written agreement)...and forgot about it. I called recently to find out the status and was told that the bike was sold last year and I would not receive any proceeds from the sale because I had left it there and had not contacted them. Perhaps a consignment agreement would have been in order. Very disappointing...I won't be going back there or recommending their shop, as I have numerous times. read more

Hellgate Cyclery has been working on my bikes for the last 4 years and I've been very satisfied with the quality of their work and their reasonable pricing. They have always kept me updated with any changes regarding scheduling and several times really helped me out in a pinch when I needed a repair done immediately. I hate being "upsold" on shit I don't want or need - the owners/operators, Kevin and Dave, seem to understand that not everyone who bikes can afford the latest and greatest (even if you have a nice bike). My experience has been that, if anything, they'll advise against an "upgrade" or change if they don't think it's necessary and tell you why. Great guys to work with and I love that I'm patronizing a local business that is all about cycling in Missoula. read more
