I have feet that are about half a size different from each other, and which are flat. Shoe shopping is NOT easy for me. It's an ordeal, in fact, and one that I avoid for as long as possible. Runner's Edge made it a pleasure. I was greeted when I walked through the door and immediately it was like I had a personal shopper. She started by guiding me to a device that measured the shape of my feet, right down to the pressure points, and used that information as a basis for picking not only the right shoes, but the right insoles to try. She was exceedingly patient with me while we tried about 8 pairs of shoes (a far lower number than I usually have to try on), sometimes taking extra time to swap insoles and talk about what worked and what didn't. We eventually found a pair and insole match that was almost perfect for me, except my ankles would slip slightly at the heels. She had me try on a different pair of socks, and I was shocked when they entirely solved the problem. The end result was that I left the store with the most comfortable new pair of shoes I had ever purchased, following the best customer service experience I've ever had in a shoe store. I'm not going to lie; it was an expensive visit. I spent over $250 on the shoes, the insoles, and a few pairs of socks. But the products were of the highest quality, and they gave me a buy 3 get 1 free deal on the socks! It's a lot more than I've ever spent on this type of thing, but in my difficult case, it was worth it. I decided to start running. To get in shape. To enjoy being outdoors. But I was told I should get fitted for shoes, not just buy some off ebay, like I was planning on doing. So we drove over 3 hours to go to Runner's Edge in Missoula. And it was a good decision. The saleswoman asked me to walk barefoot the length of store and then had me try on 3 different pairs to see which felt best on my feet. She explained why she was recommending those shoes and I tried them on the treadmill at the back of the store. We came in the store right after the St. Patrick's Day race in Missoula, which was not the best timing, but I was helped quickly and within 20 minutes or so I had decided on a new pair of shoes that would help me accomplish my running goals. I'm a shoe girl. I love shopping for shoes. And boots. And sandals. And wedges. I also really love running. So, you would think that shopping for running shoes would be, like, The Best Thing Ever. It's not. It sucks. I will wear my running shoes well past the point where they look like running shoes because I am so afraid that my new shoes will not be as good as my old shoes. I had gained a significant amount of weight over the years and knew I needed to start getting healthy again. While I tend to buy a lot off of Amazon, I knew that a new pair of good running shoes that could hold my weight while running and provide stable and secure footing wasn't something to mess around with. I checked online and found Runner's Edge downtown here in Missoula. I decided to go in and get fitted for some good shoes. I walked in and was met with smiles and staff that were interested in helping me. I'm not your ultra runner, athlete, or say running is a passion. It's clear they can help those people too, but I just wanted expert opinion. Enter Erin Forde. Erin spent time with me getting an accurate foot size, checked my gate to see what type of shoe would be best, offered several shoe types to test, and absolutely treated me well even though I'm a bit overweight and just getting back in shape. I was a bit worried that I would spend a lot of money at a "specialty" runners shop but the shoes prices were very good. Erin and I chatted about running a bit as well and she's skilled at her craft being a runner, coach, and just a good person. I was in Idaho for a week for IMTUF, running a 100 miler and then moved across Montana to get to Yellowstone for some vacation afterwards. Having run all over the country, tons of marathons and a bunch of ultras, I can say that Runner's Edge fits in with the best of the running stores I have seen- and is a runner's store for sure. Bought both my most recent pairs of running shoes here. Great product service information! My female employee was kind, patient, and knowledgeable even in the wear pattern from my previous foot. She then brought out four shoes of varying brands, which even the lowest on my list felt much better than the ones I had used. They sell the kind of shoes you would normally have to order online to purchase, have a sophisticated/thorough testing for which shoe will ultimately prevent the most injury. I must admit both times my neutral to off mood has phased neither employee during visits and I walked out each time feeling like I had just bought the most comfortable shoe of my life. Great stock/product range, informative/encouraging atmosphere, and well worth the price tag of finding EXACTLY which shoe you should get.
