I've been going to Helen for more than a year now, and have brought enough variety for alterations that I can safely say I'd trust her with anything. This is a very different experience than going to a dry cleaner for alterations. Helen greets you, then has you try everything on (unless you have clear directions like hem to x" inseam), and does some quick marking or pinning. This provides a chance to discuss my needs and her plan, which is terrific because what I may ask for may not be feasible. By way of example, I recently brought in a stretch cotton jacket that needed to be taken in. Rather than taking it in at the visibly designed front or back seams, she suggested taking it in from under the arms. It was a great solution that worked well. I don't even ask her about prices - it always seems to work out to roughly $10/piece, whether it's taking things in or hemming or fixing waistlines. Time frame is usually 1-2 wks depending on how much you bring in. I've never had any issues with things not being ready when promised. Very professional. Remember - cash and checks only!! read more

I brought my dress to Helen's at the recommendation of a family friend. The dress needed to be taken in nearly an entire size in all directions (by taking the entire dress apart, taking it in, and then recreating it) and have a bustle added. I had less than 3 months from engagement to wedding, so she had limited time to get it done. She quoted me a very reasonable rate (less than anywhere else I called) for all the work that was required. The dress came out amazing, and I couldn't be happier with it!!! I can't believe no one has written a review yet! Oh well, gotta start somewhere. I live in Boston and found Helen's while my parents still lived in NH. She is SO GOOD that every month or so I climb in the car with my iPod and a Dunks coffee and head on up to Manch! She can do ANYTHING - I have literally bought things from stores, sketched out what I WANT it to look like, taken the article of clothing and sketch to her and VOILA!! Done to perfection. She has taken thing in for me, let things out, shortened, re-worked, chopped in half, combined two things, EVERYTHING! The fact that she is a dressmaker is key. For example, there was a dress on clearance at Filenes Basement that I was IN LOVE with, but it was a size 8. I am a size 00. Problem? Not for Helen! Took the whole thing apart and re-darted it and fit it to me perfectly. I always get compliments that things "fit me beautifully" which I always laugh about because, besides T-Shirts, there isn't a single article of clothing in my wardrobe that she hasn't touched. Price = CHEAP, esp compared to Boston tailors. She worked on 18 pieces for me, ranging from party dresses, suits, jeans, and tops in two weeks for $200. That is an average of appx. $10 an item! Absolutely do not bother going anywhere else - if I am willing to drive the hour to get things done right than you can make the trip! This woman was a dressmaker at one time and it shows, she does great work. She has altered two different bridesmaid dresses for me and made both fit like a glove. You couldn't even tell from the outside or inside of the dress that it had been tailored. She is now the ONLY person I will let touch my dresses. She is fast and does a wonderful job. Helen's Tailoring literally saved my wedding dress! I took it to another seamstress and they screwed up the hem, the bust and half- a**ed everything. I was FURIOUS! Especially since once I got it back I had less than one week until my wedding. I called Helen's based on a good review from a co-worker and was thrilled that she didnt seem phased by the fact that i had only a few days to right all the wrongs. In two days she mad the pointy bust inserts look much more natural, as well as fix the hem and steam the entire dress. It was perfect when I picked it up. My husband brought in dress pants that I wear to work that were too big for me. The woman asked if I could try them on for her but I wasn't there. So she said "Ok, I'll just shorten them based on where your wife is stepping on them." Four days later, I get my two pairs back. Great prices, they fit perfectly and they look brand new. Tailoring was done when she said it would be. My dress was brand new, the dress still had the tags on it and in perfect condition. Why, because it was brand new and never worn. When I picked it up and tried it on and said the hem was perfect t, she took my dress from me and told me to wait 20 minutes while they steam the dress. She gave it to me in the plastic bag and it wasn't touched or taken out of the bag, until the day of my daughters wedding. When I took my dress out of the bag on the day of the wedding to put it on, there was a big stain on the back of the dress. I was so upset and could not bring it back to Helen or a dry cleaner, because I was in the bridal suite with my daughter and her bridal party. The rest of the bridal party and I was in shock and we tried to get out the stain without making it worst, because it was on the tooling. When I purchased my dress it was I inspected and it certainly had no stains. Shame on her and her husband or whoever the other Taylor is that took my $400 dress to steam it after the tailoring. I've had pants, jackets, and overcoats tailored at Helen's and have consistently had great results at reasonable prices. She even altered an overcoat with sleeve stitching by reworking the sleeve. Normally, that is complex work that would cost a fortune, but they did it as if it were nothing at all. When we first moved to NH, another place charged my wife $60 to hem a simple dress. Helen reworked my daughter's prom dress, adjusting the chest, back and hem for much less than that. The dress looked great when she was done, but that's just par for the course here. Going there tomorrow with a suit, couple of jackets and pants. Well worth a visit! read more
