Cheese, cheese and more cheese! One side of the place is alllllll the cheese. The other is the gift shop. There are so many varieties of cheese available. Everything like traditional cheddar and swiss to more unique options like veggie, and buffalo wing. Most of the cheese had samples. It was a perfect way to get a sense of the differences between some of the varieties (standard vs smoked vs aged for example). Most cheese could be purchased in blocks, slices and cubes. They also had some beef stick options, dips and cheese fudge. I had never heard of cheese fudge before so was very intrigued. It had a different texture and flavor than traditional fudge but was definitely worth trying. They also have traditional fudge on the other side of the store. There were workers behind the counter actively packing cheese and willing to answer any questions you might have. Much like other tourist attractions, you have to walk through the gift shop to get to the cash registers. The line was kind of long, but it moved fairly quickly. This was a great stop with a lot of tasty products. Definitely recommend a visit! read more

Stopping at Heini's is an Amish country tradition. What was always great about this place, was their samples. You could try all the cheeses and take home your favorites! COVID guidelines took that away, but I'm happy to report the samples have returned Locally made from fresh ingredients, you will find some of the best tasting cheeses here. I'm pretty sure that I've been here before, years ago, and was excited to visit. I can't tell if they're going out of business, or moving, but when I went in September of 2024, there was a big SALE sign out front, and everything was marked down (yay!). Going through, I'd say the place was AT LEAST half empty, with lots of empty shelves. Most of the cheese is Bunker Hill, which I do love. The candy section is super minimized, and there weren't a lot of other things available, though you can see that there used to be a lot more retail space available, it's just empty. As others have mentioned, no samples, which was fine, but it was very empty and not much going on. I'd be interested to see if they grow back up to the previous size. read more

If there was such a thing as cheese heaven this place would be it! They have a huge selection of cheeses to choose from. I've never seen so much cheese in my life. They also have a pretty big selection of spices as well among other things. The building itself is really cute too and it's surrounded by a farm. We tried to go to another cheese place in the area and quickly left after seeing that it was a tourist trap. This place was the exact opposite sooooo much better! Man... where to start! Before I was vegan this was one my favorite places to visit in the world. Yes, I have a cheese addiction ;) I remember coming here for the first time with my cousins while on a vacation to their house in Youngstown. That was probably one of the best days of my life. I couldn't believe the selection of cheeses here and the samples were plentiful. Mmm! This place is so welcoming and the people who work here are so kind and generous. The vibe here is very relaxing and chill. They have so much to offer in regards to healthy Amish foods but their cheese is the superstar here. They have one of my favorite cheeses in the world. Their Swiss is to die for! Listen, I'm not one of those vegans who are like OMG this, OMG that! I respect people and whatever they want to eat is on them. So I am vegetarian sometimes and pescatarian sometimes too. So when I'm vegetarian this place has my heart as does the whole area. When visiting in May 2021, we were to sad to see they still had no samples. Fortunately we've tried most of the cheeses on previous visits, so we know it's a great place to buy cheese. If you grab the cheese ends, you can get a great deal just because it doesn't look as pretty. In addition to the cheese and fudge shop, there are a lot of other items for sale in the larger portion of the shop. They used to give samples & show the workers making the cheese - that may have stopped during COVID times because neither was happening when I visited this past September. There's plenty of refrigerated food available for purchase (cheeses, meats, pickled foods) & dry food (candies, chocolates, sauces, pastas) I tried several chocolates & they were wonderful. If you're in Amish Country, you'd better move your heinie over to Heini's. It's the generosity of Costco samples with the crowds of a Disney attraction. As you'll notice just by pulling into the parking lot. But yes, the line is worth it. When you enter Heini's, you can grab a shopping cart or basket if you're a good person and plan to actually buy something. If you're broke (check) or just shameless (check), then look to your right towards the refrigerated cheese and fudge section and trace the line back to its end. Even if it looks long, it's worth the wait. Because free. And because so much cheese. And cream cheese. And the sweet ending - fudge heaven. My favorites were the smoked cheeses, pineapple cream cheese, and peanut butter fudge. **The best strategy is to take a partner with you and have someone else get apple butter or peanut butter sauce samples on the pretzel sticks in the various aisles while you wait in line. But please play nice and don't cut the line, and also make way for people actually buying products and Amish girls restocking them!** The middle section of Heini's has an assortment of packaged candies, chocolates, and honey that make great seasonal gifts. No samples here, but the bathrooms are located up a ramp near the entrance so I guess it's important. The women's stalls are not the most sanitary as there's a constant flux of tourists, so just try not to sit on that housefly and wash your hands. Maybe bring some hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes too if you're really a germaphobe. The leftmost section has more samples, this time for more dips. And... SAUSAGE. The sausage line hugs the wall closest to the entrance and is not one to miss if you're at all carnivorous! Heini's also offers tours of the factory that you can sign up for at a table in the left section, but as there was no cheesemaking going on when we went, we didn't take advantage of it. I just sampled about 60 different cheeses and am feeling it. You should be able to find something delicious here. Many flavors and textures. They also sell meats, candies and random knick knacks. Today is Feb 2nd (down season) and it still took about 40 minutes to get through. If you come here in the fall when they are bussing ppl in be prepared and bring suit cases of patients. The fact that you get to try out all of the cheeses they offer as well as several of the other items, jams, butters, fudge, etc. That made the experience even better and totally had me buying more things than I planned to. The ghost pepper cheese was HOT, but of course we bought some to share with family that enjoys spicy food. The fudge was also amazing and we ended up buy 3 different kinds, chocolate, peanut butter chocolate, and maple pecan fudge. I also loved that they offered old fashioned candy (so we bought some) and they even had some of the handmade baskets made by the local Amish that I ended up purchasing. Our second cheese shop stop, and a fun one. Thankfully it wasn't crazy busy; I would hate to fight crowds in here. It's broken down into several areas, and traffic flow would be chaotic. But on a late Saturday afternoon it wasn't too bad, and we loved wandering around looking at all the items. Cheese is the big draw, and they have a lot, with plenty of samples. Ended up getting a couple of kinds, and some jerky. There are lots of windows so you can watch cheese being made (unfortunately not while we were there.) Other areas have candy, some dry ingredients, souvenirs, cookbooks, etc. We got some candy and a bunch of cookie cutters- they have a wide variety, and they're cheap. Sweetie has plans for them. Plenty of parking, but go slow and be careful- it can be hard to get in and out. read more

It again has been a long time since I visited this place but again noticed that this store has changed quite drastically. Yes, you can sample the cheeses. The rules are as follows: take a toothpick and use it to pierce a sample from the refrigerated container. Take the sample off the toothpick and then eat it. Along the far back wall you can see cheese-making in the process but all my girlfriend and I saw was a large vat with the yellow liquid swirling in it and a man overseeing the whole operation. Along the outside perimeter are most of the cheeses. On the inside, they had bottled beverages, fudges, meats, and accessories for your cheese purchase or whatever you decide. They do make up gift baskets. A lot of my favorites were there including the lacy baby Swiss as well as horseradish cheese and for a different take one made out of raw milk. These three were on my bucket list so I picked up small quantities of each. You can either purchase it in cubes, slabs, or quarters depending upon your needs. In addition to these they sell cream cheese, yogurt cheese, and as a first different fudge made out of cheese. I tried a chocolate one and it literally was to die for! So was the price. Fudge cheeses are extremely costly so expect to shelve out some money if you want some. There is also a fee if you want it sliced. Normally when we come to the end of the circuit there is a check out area but it was not there. I found out later they moved it to the center of the store. Also to my disappointment was that they weren't selling goat cheese. The place is decked out with lovely artwork of Holmes County as well as the cow. In the back is more like a supermarket style shopping where you can get various goods we had seen elsewhere. Here too, if you just wish to purchase that specific type of cheese without sampling any then they have a good selection in a certain form. In the center area they have cookbooks and some of the things you can use for baking from scratch. The check out area is there with 4 counters. Once in line you go to the next available window and pay with cash or card. Again if you are coming a distance it is wise to take a cooler since these things are highly perishable. I did ask about the goat cheese. One clerk told me they don't make it anymore and another told me they made some today but I would have to look in the back. I was too worn out and just decided to stick with my three cheeses. Please note that Heini's is a big tourist attraction and although there is plenty of parking this place will get crowded when a bus tour visits. We were fortunate not to have to deal with that during our visit. It is a short drive from Berlin, Ohio and the outside does resemble a Swiss cheese chalet. read more

The best cheese place in Amish Country hands down. Heini's makes so many different cheeses and they are all good. Not only do they make cheese but they have meats, and many pantry staples like popcorn, spices, soups, dips, seasonings, and much more. The canned Tomato soup in a jar is fantastic. Their house made spices are great for any occasion. But did I mention cheese. Oh my do they have the best cheese. Don't be shy. Try some of the smoked verities as well. My favorite is the smoked hot pepper. After you visit those larger more commercial cheese shops in the area go over to Heine's. You won't shop for cheese anyway we else again. Everyone should get the idea by now that this is cheese sample heaven. We stopped at a market to pick up some breakfast before heading to Heini's. Big mistake. We were total gluttons with the samples. Highly recommend an empty stomach if you want to sample. One thing I was not pleased with was one of the containers had moldy cheese so clearly these samples are on the breaking point of going bad. We arrived 10 minutes after opening and we were the only ones in the store. We ended up with butter cheese, jams, apple butter, a shot glass, Cheetos and a postcard. So yes, there are options besides cheese and a more commercialized section (Cheetos for the toddler). The highlight were the bags of cheese crisps that I was too cheap to buy but omgosh they were delicious!!! Little dollops of crispy cheese chips; perfection. Definitely a tourist trap. It gets busier every year. They used to have a couple of gift shops inside but those have closed & that area is just more cheese. The line today was longer than any other time I've been there. The cheese is well worth the wait though. I agree with the other poster about missing the cheese ends they used to have. A family of 3 today parked themselves in front of the beef sticks determined to try every one they had. Yes the samples are there to eat but when the line to get into the store is 30 to 45 minutes long, take 1 & keep moving, it's not meant to be your lunch. As for the staff most are very nice but was 1:00 on Saturday afternoon the time to wash the floor & then tell customers not to walk on it? I gave them 4 stars because the product is that good. Beware though of the kettle corn truck in the parking lot. Don't buy it there you can get the authentic stuff from a cast iron kettle down the street at Hershbergers. read more

Stopped by here on several previous road trips before. I enjoy wandering around the inside to view all the wares they sell. Sampling cheeses, dips, and meats to see what I must take home. Everything is pre-packaged however if you want a special cut, they will charge you extra. I always grab some Amish butter logs and of course, cheese. This time I also checked out the hot pepper spreads and mustard. The bulk candy was fun to shop. I will say they are a little on the pricey side. The cheese selection here is ridiculous, and best of all, you can sample roughly 80% of the stuff in the entire store, from cheese to sausages to even their teas. Sample away buddies! I bought a tea because I was thirsty, but I wish I had chosen the raspberry one cause it was so damn delicious! If you love some heat, make sure to try the ghost pepper cheeses, OMG!!! Did you know, they sell marshmallows too, the kind that you pick out from a box of lucky charms, all by itself!!!! Who needs that cereal anyway?! Everyone knows the best part is the marshmallows!!! You can sample every cheese they have out in the case, it's always super clean, super organized and they literally have something for everyone. I liked Guggisberg WAY better! Heini's had lines through the whole store, the prices are higher and it didn't seem as fresh and not as nice a atmosphere. They have a giftshop and several little stores under one roof, but it seems all about profit. We have been twice now and never got anything not wanting to wait in an hour long line when we get it twice as good for half the price right down the street! read more

AJ gave us a thorough but succinct tour of the facility where they make all of Heini's great cheeses, and he was super friendly and gave us other suggestions of things to see while in Amish country! This store also is great because you can sample almost everything! The cheeses are great, and they also offer a wide selection of local jams and condiments as well as fudge made from Heini's cheese! I stopped by here with my wife earlier today not knowing what I was getting myself into. Upon entering the store and heading up to the top level we were greeted by a line to get into the "cheese showroom". After a somewhat slow 10 minute wait we were finally able to see exactly what we were waiting for. A ridiculous number of different cheeses and tastings of almost all of them. We proceeded through the U shaped area trying quite a number of cheeses and passing on even more. Some like the amish sharp cheddar, ghost pepper and Bermuda onion were good enough that we bought them while others like the caraway I was sad that I tried. In the end my wife and I left with 4 different types of cheese whenever we hadn't really planned on buying any. So from that standpoint the cheese chalet did an amazing job of getting us to buy. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. I would also recommend it to anyone else who loves cheese but would caution you that you probably will not leave empty handed! read more

Located in the heart of Ohio's Amish country, Heini's is the place for locally produced cheese. There are at least 4 aisles filled with hundreds of cheeses, such as Amish Bermuda onion, Amish Farmer's cheese, and raw milk cheese. They also have a green moon cheese, which I suggest buying just for the novelty. There are free samples of each cheese, and you can also ask the staff (who are all Amish women) if they can give you a slice if there isn't a sample available. There's also many locally jarred jams and jellies, deli meats, roll butter, fudge, and Amish cookbooks. You can have a whole meal just on all the free samples! In the back of the store they sell kitschy stuff, like Thomas Kinkade prints, housewares, soaps, etc that you can get at any houseware store like Bed, Bath and Beyond. Buy yourself some cheese and fudge, and then head to the bakery across the street for some freshly baked shoo fly pie. Yum! read more

We've been here several times and I'm shocked I haven't written a review before now. I logged on to Yelp this evening to look up my review and sadly, my plan was to re-view and yes......take AWAY a star. YUCK. My first couple of visits here were def. a 5 start experience. Was here again a couple of years ago and Heini's was a solid 4. But our visit yesterday? Just not the same. I stand by this 3 star rating. First off, we've never had to 'stand in line' to check out the cheese. Yes, it's always been a "conveyor belt" type of movement but a long time? You don't wait long so no biggie but in past visits, you could sample about 99% of the cheeses. No longer the case. There are less samples and they don't seem to keep up with keeping the samples filled. What's the fun in empty bowls?? That's a huge part of the appeal to Heini's. In past visits, Heini's offered a section of "cheese ends" Discounts on hunks of cheese. Again, not this time. Look, if you're in Amish Country, Heini's will be on your radar.
