When my rescued Boston Terrier passed away at nearly fourteen years old my heart was broken. She was there for our wedding, first apartment together, move to Denver, our first house, our first baby and second. You name it, she was there-- supporting us. No dog loves harder than a rescue-- Sammie was proof of that. But with a two year old and newborn we decided to hold off on getting another. Months of my toddler asking where Sammie had gone, was torture. While I was sure we would adopt a rescue, my original thought of an adult dog was diminishing. Over time we decided the next addition to our family would be a puppy, so we wouldn't have to deal with our children's heartache anytime soon. Heartland Humane Society was outstanding. They were very responsive, they had answers to any question and they did their homework to ensure each animal goes to a good home. After seeing a photo online, inquiring, trading numerous emails followed by submitting an eventually approved application we traveled nearly 100 miles to meet him. It was love at first sight. The moment he rolled on his back for a belly rub, having spotted our toddler, we just knew. We adopted a nearly six month old pup, Arlo Guy. Please adopt, don't shop. This organization is fabulous.

Otherwise, it appears appointments are a month + out as of 3/2022. Intake was amazing as staff met everyone coming in that day at the door and assisted with initial paperwork. Our kitty was just past her follow-up shot regimen for rabies and distemper, which the clinic provided at a minimal cost. Overall, our bill was just over 90$ which included nail trimming/capping (10$), shots, spaying, pain medication, overnight stay, as well as a microchipping fee (25$). This is far, far less then the range of prices we were quoted at other local animal veterinarian/hospitals. (Anywhere from 250$ to 1050$, just to *spay* alone.) Although a bit of a drive for those living in Hiawatha/Marion/North CR, the cost and level of care make it worth your time. If you choose to utilize IHA for your pet healthcare needs, please be sure to add a little extra when you pay to help keep this local non-profit going.

We housed Augusta for four months and loved her very much, but her senile condition/medical complications became too difficult for us to maintain (namely her thyroid deficiency). So, we discussed it with our vet and agreed the shelter was our best alternative. From the get-go, we were received both unprofessionally and insensitively at ICAC, without so much as a greeting. The woman I assume is in charge glared us up and down and asked where the cat came from. She couldn't have looked more disinterested in what we were saying. She then informed us they were unable to take strays found outside of IC. We asked where we should go instead. 15 minutes later, she referred us to a shelter in Cedar Rapids. I explained that Gus had been living with us in IC for four months under local veterinary care and asked that she reconsider Gus's residency. At that time, she began interrogating us about how we acquired the cat, taking a tone as if to imply we were neither "legal" nor competent guardians for Gus. After tiptoeing in circles around reasons to get rid of us, she finally sighed out something along the lines of, "I guess you could relinquish her to us..." We ccepted (so sorry to inconvenience you, lady). She then drilled us over why we didn't just do it at the vet (I'd already told this woman at least twice we'd never done this before). While I was signing the waiver, she was checking Gus's teeth, at which time Gus started growling and the woman took her to another room. She returned almost immediately without Gus and at no point offered us to say our goodbyes. She just sent us on our way. Nevermind what was lacking here in basic service, how the fuck does an animal shelter lack less than basic sympathy?

Unfortunately, after bringing him home, I found out he has roundworms something I was never informed of. I was specifically told he needed to see a vet before I could pick him up, which gave me confidence he was healthy. I paid a significant amount, and now I'm facing additional unexpected vet bills to treat a condition that should have been disclosed upfront. I also made it clear that I have another dog at home, so this situation could have easily impacted more than just one pet. To make matters worse, my vet mentioned that they've seen similar cases from this same place, which is very concerning. Another red flag was not being allowed to read the terms of agreement myself they were only read to me. Looking back, that doesn't sit right. I understand that puppies can come with health risks, including parasites like roundworms, but transparency is everything especially at this price point. I feel let down by the lack of honesty and communication. Again, I love my pup and wish the best for the other dogs there, but I would strongly encourage anyone considering purchasing from here to ask detailed questions, request full documentation, and be fully aware of potential risks before committing.

As you walk in the first set of doors there is a disarray of items on both sides of entry way. We didn't know if it was donations or trash because of dark garbage bags. We entered into main reception area. We overheard a lady finishing up a call with someone. After her call had ended she made inappropriate rude comments about the caller. It was unprofessional & made my wife & I extremely uncomfortable. We didn't know if they are short staffed or inadequately trained by a Manager. We felt if they are going to talk about someone rudely after a phone call, what would they say about us. We were indecisive our first visit, hence the reason we came back. But now we are rethinking this facility if they hire people to run it in such a manner we don't know if we want to purchase an animal. We may peruse the free kitten options or look into neighboring rescues.

We've adopted 2 dogs and 2 cats in the last 4 years and each time was a great experience. Our first…read moredog had heartworm, but the had him on medication and sent us home with what he needed at no charge. We brought him in a couple of times to be tested, again, at no extra charge. We've had him 4 years now with no problems. Our 2nd dog was rescued by the ASPCA in Arkansas. We adopted her 2 days after she was transferred. We've had her now for 3 years. And the two cats, brother and sister, were just 8 weeks old when we adopted them. We went for one car but couldn't split them up. Thanks to the Bissell Foundation's Clear the Shelter program we were able to afford both kittens. We've had them now for 2 years and love every one of them. The Humane Society personnel was very kind and helpful each time and the vet was very nice.
