I have since referred everyone I know, as well as strangers who compliment my hair cut, which happens regularly. Wanted to leave a quick shout-out to Josh at Heartzilla for keeping my hair on point. Josh is part surgeon, part magician, and part comedian. Whether you're getting the same thing done as last time, or trying something new, Josh consistently delivers excellent cuts that leave me looking a feeling top notch, and I recommend his skills without reservation. I spent a long time getting haircuts that were ok, but Josh knows how to bring out the best in his clients' hair to make them look great. Josh also isn't a one trick pony when it comes to cuts: while waiting for my turn I've seen him do a variety of work on very different customers, and he consistently make his clients look way better than when they sat down. You can have the best clothes in the world, but a bad haircut will ruin any look. So be smart and get Josh to make you look good. I've spent the past two years in search of a good place to get my hair done. I had a good stylist for years at Population but he now has a 3 month wait list. I found a good salon in the east bay but it's just too far to travel too. I tried a salon in the lower Haight where the stylist gave me color that looked nothing at all what I asked for then charged me nearly 500 dollars! Oh how I heart Heartzilla Salon! Well, I heart Ana, whom I've followed around for years like an arrow after a heart - from Victor's to Pirate, to now finally, and deservedly, her very own solo venture. I've had short hair, long hair, curly hair, straight hair, color and natural - all handled expertly and easily by Ana. Not only that, every single person I've ever sent to Ana has themselves become ardent followers of this coiffeur extrarordinaire. Her cuts last for months and months, and even highlights seem to grow out looking more natural than most, without the stark root-show that plagues lesser stylists. I've seen her twice in her new digs, this last time for a dramatic return to short hair once my newborn decided that he loves to cling to fistfuls of my long hair. I went to Ana, looking for the non-mom cut, but short nonetheless . . . she SOOOOOO delivered! Complete with super short bangs on one side (in general, a no-no for curly hair), as well as managing to change what side my part is on (for the first time in my life), I can safely say I've never had this haircut before. In the week I've had the new do, I've received compliments every single day. But best of all is the minimal effort it takes to get it right in the morning - a dab of water for the short bangs and some water/gel scrunching for the curls and I'm on my way. I've been going to Ana since I moved to San Francisco 3 years ago. Back then, she was working at Pirate Salon and I found her through amazing Yelp reviews. Now she's opened her own place, Heartzilla Salon. There are lots of reasons Ana is top notch. First, she's very skilled with hair. Cuts, colors, conservative styles, crazy styles...she does them all. She's an artist (literally, not just metaphorically), and her eye for detail really comes through when it comes to hair. She's particularly good at understanding hair weight. My hair can be straight or wavy, and she really knows how to balance out layer lengths so my hair has volume but isn't too poofy. Second, Ana is a real pleasure to talk to. She's kind and genuine with a great sense of humor and a lot of depth. If you're getting your hair colored, you usually have to sit for a while. And there's no one else I'd rather have to sit with than Ana. Third, her prices are very competitive. She's made a deliberate decision to focus on doing excellent cuts and colors, and not on styling hair or selling product. That means that when you come to Heartzilla Salon, you wash and style (if you want) your own hair once you're finished. And that's fine with me. Finally, Ana's ethos and the way she runs her business are really refreshing. She has integrity and a strong vision for the long term business she wants to create. From the decor (all done by her) to the online booking (to keep prices low) to the lack of product pushing, she's doing things in line with her values. I've been lucky enough to have Ana working on my head of hair for a while now, and I am always amazed at just how good she makes my hair look after every cut. My hair styles have always looked very good after leaving Ana's chair, but as with everyone else, I'm sure my hair itself presents some challenges for any professional cutter. You would never know it though. In fact, my last cut has gotten me several unsolicited compliments. I'm not one to seek this type of praise, but I guess the cut I got from Ana spoke for itself (and me). All it took were a few words and obscure gestures for Ana to know exactly what I was looking for, and in a very short time, it was right in front of me in the mirror. Not only is she a true professional, but she is always super easy to talk to, but at the same time, she doesn't talk your ear off like others I've had in the past. I went in with specific instructions for a graduated bob and she gave me exactly what I intended. She's a great person & fun to talk to, which helps when you're trusting someone with your tresses. I always show her multiple pictures of what I want & each time her cuts are fabulous. An added plus is they're fabu even when growing out- which is important for me because I have thick straight hair that tends to look heavy after a while. The same can be said about her color skills which I read about before switching to her and is what drew me to her in the first place.
