We are forever grateful for Jo and Jenna's thoughtful and enthusiastic care and support. Every visit, phone call, text, etc was always particular and intimate to our own story while being backed by informed, professional advice and conversation. From billing support to postpartum visits in their new gorgeous office, Nettle made this process easy in a medical landscape that can often be so opaque and overwhelming. As a sporadic doula, I'm lucky enough to have been present at several births and they offer a level of care that I didn't know existed. We were fortunate to have an incredible home birth in our barely one bedroom apartment and throughout felt supported but empowered, nurtured but independent. From the first meeting we knew it was the only way, and they were there for us every step. Both pre and post natal care (not to mention labor and birth support) were approached with attentiveness, warmth, and joyful tenderness. I've carried their philosophy with me into parenthood and find myself asking WW(Jo/Jenna)D for decisions beyond the health of our baby girl and myself. Their sage advice and general outlook on all things birthing and beyond offer a lovely bedrock for this new phase. Briefly, we cannot recommend them highly enough. We love you Jo and Jenna and the whole Nettle crew!

Choosing Gina was, without question, the best decision my husband and I made during my pregnancy. From the very first visit, we felt the difference. Her appointments were 45 minutes long (which is rare), and each one felt personal, unhurried, and grounded in real care. Gina took the time to listen, explain, and support me through every step. One thing to expect from midwifery care -- especially with Gina -- is a deeply holistic and relationship-centered experience. It's not just about checkups; it's about being known, respected, and empowered. Throughout the birth process, Gina honored our choices and let us guide the experience -- but she also knew exactly when to step in and strongly recommend the next step when it mattered most. That level of wisdom and presence is rare, and I will always be grateful for it. When it came time for labor and delivery, Gina and the team she works with at Mount Sinai West were incredible. They were clearly in sync and had worked together closely for a while -- it showed in how seamlessly they communicated and how responsive they were to my needs. They struck the perfect balance: compassionate and calm, while also providing firm and necessary guidance when the moment called for it. If you're looking for a provider who will treat your birth as something sacred and personal, Gina is it. And if my husband and I decide to have another child, there's no question -- we'd go back to Gina in a heartbeat.

Exactly what we were looking for. She practices out of a cozy office in park slope, which couldn't be further from a sterile, impersonal OBGYN exam room. Throughout the pregnancy Gina devoted lots of time at every appointment to answering our questions, not only about medical concerns, but also about how we were preparing emotionally for labor and postpartum with our new baby and our extended families. We always appreciated her wholistic approach and her measured, rational advice based on a solid medical understanding, her own personal experience and her appreciation for time-honored midwifery practices. This was our first birth and it ended up progressing much faster than any of us expected. We had a harried drive from Brooklyn to the hospital in Manhattan in active labor. Gina was ready and waiting for us when we got there, and we were immensely reassured seeing a familiar and calm face. During the birth, Gina was fantastic at communicating what was going on and keeping the environment calm and positive. We had complications that involved bring in an OBGYN, but Gina remained in charge which gave us confidence that we were getting the best care possible. In the days after the birth, she checked in with us every day and not only took care of our physical well-being, but also provided sage advice on how to take care of our new baby, which set us up for success in those intense first days. If we're pregnant in the future, Gina would be the first person we'd call so we could work with her again.

My first child was a c-section after a very long labor. After this, I was determined to have a VBAC (and did so with my next two kiddos). They were all so supportive of everything I wanted to do to help make this happen. Each birth experience was different but progressively easier and more peaceful. My favorite things: They are up to date on every single piece of relevant baby / mama research and any question you throw at them via text, email or in person always proves as such. They are warm and comforting - zero shaming or judgment of any sorts. No changing of gowns required -- just a cozy blanket over your lap. Each meeting (because it doesn't feel like a traditional "appointment") is initiated with a catch up on the coziest couch. Each summer there's a new baby picnic in Central Park. It's so nice to catch up under the sun and always so nice to hang out with the person who welcomed your baby into this world. They are all such genuine and caring people. This is about my experience with a twin pregnancy. I think I would have been happy with PSM if I…read morehad a singleton--I was especially happy with my care from Roseanne, Danielle, and Genevra. However, I would NOT recommend this practice for a twin pregnancy. They take so much pride in being a midwife practice that delivers twins that they obfuscate the reality of delivering twins with them. There are 14 midwives; I met half of them. I got so much conflicting information about their procedures for twin delivery that I cried from frustration multiple times. It's clear to me now that the midwives have vastly different levels of experience with twin deliveries, and your experience will be different depending on who delivers. Rather than being transparent about that, each midwife just told me their version as if it were definite. I eventually just ignored whatever the midwives told me was going to happen and accepted that I had to go into the hospital with zero expectations. One of the midwives indicated in my chart that I was upset because of the more medicalized process of a twin birth. Subsequent midwives began my next several appointments with a spiel about why twin births have more restrictions, and I had to repeatedly explain that my frustration was actually caused by the conflicting information. It made me feel like no one was actually listening to me and just heard what they expected to hear. I was told that if both babies were head down, I could attempt a vaginal birth; if Baby A was head down and Baby B was not, the midwives would deliver with support from an OB; if neither were head down, I'd get a C-section. However, the midwives actually have very little power when it comes to a twin delivery at the hospital. There were only three "twin-friendly" OBs at Methodist, and to be able to attempt a vaginal delivery when Baby B is breech, you have to schedule an induction for when one of those OBs is working. I was due during a time when two of those OBs were on vacation, so even though my MFM cleared me for induction any time after 37 weeks, I had to wait until I was 38+4. (My twins were 8 lbs each, I was miserable.) NONE of this was clear to me until the last couple weeks of my pregnancy. During my last appointment, I asked the midwife, "If I go into spontaneous labor before my induction date this week, and the twin-friendly OB is not working, will I likely have a C-section?" She paused and said, "I don't want to give you more anxiety," as if the better outcome would be for me to arrive at the hospital spontaneously in labor and THEN learn that I couldn't attempt a vaginal delivery, despite what I'd been told throughout my entire pregnancy. On the day of my induction, it was a very busy day and I didn't start my induction until 1p. At 4p I'd barely progressed, and my midwife told me that the "twin-friendly" OB was only working until 6p, and after the next shift started I couldn't attempt a vaginal delivery. I chose to stop my induction, stay in the hospital overnight, and start again the next day, when the twin-friendly OB was working all day. I NEVER would have agreed to start at 1p knowing I only had until 6p to start delivering, and I'm shocked that my midwife thought it was a good idea. The only reason I can think of why she didn't suggest I come back the next day in the first place is that she didn't want to come in on her day off. I ultimately was able to have a vaginal delivery, with Dr. Leonard (who was amazing) doing a breech extraction for Baby B. However, the only reason I was able to have the birth I wanted was the SHEER LUCK that my pregnancy lasted until my (relatively late) induction date. The midwife who delivered me was dismissive when I expressed my frustration with the poor communication, saying, "If you were anywhere else, you would've had a C-section automatically." That may be true for other midwife practices, but in hindsight, I would've much rather gone with a twin-friendly OB practice (my doula was able to list several)--and I've only seen midwives for my OBGYN care for the last 12 years.

Towards the end of my pregnancy I was overdue and the midwives incorrectly estimated the weight of…read moremy baby since my stomach looked small. My baby ended up being almost 9 pounds, barely any water left and facing the wrong direction. They should've kept up with better monitoring. I needed an emergency c section since labor wasn't progressing. They gave me cervidil and the contractions were so strong the baby wasn't tolerating it. They then put me on pitocin. Avoid this place please. They may seem nice but during labor there's only 2 midwives on call and a bunch of people delivering. Everytime there was an emergency c section all the staff would leave for an hour. This hospital that they are affiliated with is filled with residents who don't know how to properly give an epidural since my lower body was numb but I still felt strong contractions in my stomach. Nurses took forever and the recovery room was even worse. I would avoid this practice- would rather go to an actual OBGYN Each midwife if different each time and they give you different info each time so it's confusing. No parking either! What started off as a low risk pregnancy ended up being a lack of monitoring and negligence since they didn't bother to weigh the baby or check the position

Like you, I searched for an affordable birthing class that would cover everything I needed to know about pregnancy, labor, delivery, and post-partum care from A to Z. The Birthing Center's class was exactly what I needed as a first-time mom. If you're hesitant about signing up because of the distance, just know that the subway is a 5-minute walk from the front door and the classes are purposely kept to a smaller size - you won't find hands-on teaching like this in any of the larger hospital classes, trust me! From the moment the class starts, Nurse Jackie is teaching techniques, breathing positions, how to time contractions, and hospital vocabulary so you know how to advocate for yourself on the big day. Best of all, she'll continue to work with you through your pregnancy and she's also a lactation consultant. (Most hospitals will send one to your room, but you may need an additional follow-up). She's also fantastic with nervous husbands. Jen Buice was our instructor and she was very informative and knew her stuff. We also got to mingle with other couples who were due at around the same time as us. We got to share our experiences with each other, which I think my husband and I wouldn't have gotten a chance to do otherwise if it wasn't for this class. We watched some childbirth videos, learned about different stages of labor, pain management, labor exercises with and without the ball, a little about lactation, etc. We also went around the room and did some activities so it could be more interactive and social. Bring some snacks because the classes might seem a little long at times! We did get a short lunch break. One slight complaint I have is that I got a little antsy and didn't feel that comfortable with their seating arrangements. I felt a little claustrophobic. Overall, I think we feel better and a little bit more prepared about being parents. I would recommend this class if you have a chance to take it.
