We've all heard the jokes about how hard it is to find an employee at Home Depot. Not here. I don't…read moreknow if it's because I'm a helpless women, but with the exception of one employee (whom I'm not sure even still works there), everyone seems to think I'm a complete idiot. Every aisle, an Orange Apron is asking to help, even if I'm going briskly past with an "I know exactly where I'm going" attiude, or am actually in the process of taking the item down from the shelf. If you're carrying something heavy and walk right past the carts (because we don't need no stinking carts), the Aprons kindly point out the carts and ask if you need help with getting one. Do they think we're blind or stupid? Also, if you buy an appliance - even if it is not the floor model - check to see if the box has been opened. Ours had the entire bottom cut off and reattached with cable ties, and when we got it home, pieces were missing. Retuning it was a whole... thing, and one of the Aprons had the brilliant idea to open another box and take the pieces we needed (which is why I suspect ours was missing pieces in the first place). But it's closer to town than Lowe's and it usually does have what you need at as decent a price as you're going to get anywhere around here. So there's that.

So.... Scholet Furniture sold us a bedroom set on Halloween. It took until sometime in December…read morebefore it was delivered. A WEEK later the bed broke. It took over a month and a half before we got someone from service to respond to us and actually come out and fix it. Based on the design of the bed it was obvious that it wasn't going to last. They said 'they'd call us to discuss options for a permanent solution' as the onsite technician agreed but said all he could do was put it back to the way we bought it. This weekend it broke again. Had we heard from Scholet since end of January when they were here? Of course not. Their 'service' department is the furthest thing from it. We spent 2,000+ on a full set for our bedroom. Not only did the center supports break, one of the slats screws striped out of its hole and as we moved the bed to try and 'temporarily fix it' we find that the headboard was half unscrewed from just sleeping in the bed and would have just fallen off soon. At this point our bedroom has become a jungle gym nightmare that LUCKILY we were able to fit our mattress on the floor with the set still in the room. So we call to request the whole set be returned as its been a whole 4 1/2 months since we took delivery and we've had major issues twice and we obviously don't want part of a set in our room we bought the set b/c we wanted a SET. WE don't want to wait weeks for their service people to come out, not solve the problem and then promptly forget us again. We want it out of our house. SO What happened when we called? Call 1: Sunday - Sales says service will get back to us. Call 2: Monday - from Service "We'll have to talk to the owner they're not here today", our response: " CALL THEM, we can barely move in our room and its not our fault only one person can authorize a return in a company as large as Scholet" Call 3: Monday - from Service "We'll only take back the bed" That's funny, they were billed as a set, so I expect the set to be refunded ,not some arbitrary number assigned to each piece without any detail on our receipt that it was the original price of the pieces when we bought it. Needless to say, we're out a bed frame. We are probably out over a thousand dollars b/c we're now stuck with a cheap feeling bedroom set that's incomplete once the broken frame is taken away. Their only defense is "We've never had one break like this, lets just give you a new one". What the hell is a new one just like the existing one going to change???? The supports are a single pole in the center on a single bolt in SOFT wood that's about an inch thick on each side. ANY Shift in weight on it is going to do exactly what happened, RIP THE BOLTS out of it. Another frame of the exact same design isn't going to cut it and Scholet's terrible response time for delivery and repair already made us not want to work with them further. TLDR: -Bad Bed Frame Design, -It took them nearly 2 months to come fix it it the first time after it broke under a week of having it. -We've had the bed for 5 months. -They refused to take it back as a set, and at first refused to take it back at all. -They're going to refund us 'what the bed cost'. According to my invoice that's ~2,000.00 and included a dresser, night stand and mirror. -They're going to break the set price apart and only refund us for the bed. So we're stuck with PART of a bedroom set for our room.

Before I could even give the guy the receipt for my return she saw my items and in a rude tone told me they didn't sell this item. I then told her that I got it from the location in Delhi. We used The Powell Company for several jobs before realizing our mistake, so we have the experience…read moreto warn others. First, this company makes some very stupid "mistakes". For example, they put a downspout directly over an electrical outlet, and they replaced items on our house that were NOT the rotted ones. We had to call them back to move the downspout so it wouldn't block the outlet, and to replace the correct items; they got angry and blamed US for cutting into their profit because doing the work the right way would cost them money. Second, they cut corners or use cheap materials despite the impact on their customers; for example, they used plastic gutter brackets that broke in a season instead of metal ones that hold up year after year. Third, good builders try to think ahead and account for contingencies in a project in advance and fairly, but in our experience Powell didn't use its imagination because it just put all risk of an unknown or cost overrun on us. This can result in large avoidable and unnecessary costs for the homeowner. Third, being lawyers, we recognized that proposals Powell gave us, which become binding contracts once signed, were, in our opinion, unfairly one-sided -- they protected only Powell in any contingency that arose during their work and if any litigation came from the contract. We tried to change this to protect ourselves too, but could not. We have found other builders who are fairer from the get-go, or who will promptly agree to changes to lopsided proposals, and such an attitude speaks volumes. Last, but certainly not least, we foolishly didn't get other bids for a few jobs that Powell did. When we wised up, we found that Powell cost 2-4 times what other builders did for the jobs we were doing. Bottom line -- we caution anyone considering using The Powell Company.
