After Quarantine I had setup a meet and greet with Dr Head at Keauhou Veterinary Hospital, although I had to stay outside on the lanai I was able to have a long discussion with Dr. Head over the phone. One of our fur babies (Rosie) has had a long history of heart disease, sadly a couple of days later she suffered a stroke, I called KVH and even though they had 3 emergencies that morning and Dr. Head was in surgery they got me in. Dr Head called me and explained what had happened and kept her overnight, Rosie died early the next morning and Dr. Head called and took the time to just comfort my husband and I. I can't say enough about how kind the entire staff has been from when I first contacted them from the mainland to now. The problem was we needed the vaccinations so we could board the dogs in just a few weeks. We called Pet Medical and he took us just three days later. As other reviews stated, he is wonderful with animals. Our nervous and anxious dogs really calmed down. His office is not shiny and new, and yes, there's a parrot named Bob who bites and poops a lot. Whatever. His manner more than balances that out. We will definitely go back.

We moved from San Marcos California over 5 years ago and lived in Kailua Kona by ourselves. Everyone is on the mainland. I called the company and they are very kind and very compasionate. I had the opportunity to say goodbye to him for the last time for the rest of my life. I was innitially thought that the experience letting my baby go would be a horrible one. Instead, it was an enlighten experience amidst a horrible natural life experience. Naomi made sure that I would survived my husband and I could move on and be ready to face my own life challenges. I do not think that her counsel would not affecting me. However, throughout all of this difficult process, it guides me to move to the right grieving process. The grieving process was very hard, but I I think, it got better because the supports that I recieved from a kind person like Naomi, my family members who live on the mainland, and the Kaiser Permante along with the resources that available from the County of Hawaii. Naomi gave me a strong foundations and I am glad that I picked them to take care of my baby's last need. I love you my baby and we wil meet again someday!

I was a complete wreck but my time was my time and the sweet lady that ran the operation, allowed me to be myself, grieve and go at my own pace. I did a private cremation and was able to sit and wait until I could take the ashes with me. It's not cheap but for me, knowing I have my fur baby's ashes with zero doubts, was worth it to me. I had a private cremation done in La once and it was about the same price. I recommend then with no hesitation! The only thing I'd recommend them changing would be to do nose prints or paw prints. In La I got a nice little laser engraved wooden ornament with my cat's nose and paw print and her name included with the cremation. Something like that would be a great improvement to the service provided. All of that said... still impressed and I appreciate everything!

After doing the shelter dog field trip in Kauai, I was happy to learn that they had a similar…read moreprogram on Big Island. We were able to book a 9:30 am Sat appointment online and it was nice they had us answer some questions to pair us up with a dog. You can also see which dogs are available to be taken out for a field trip from their website, since they have a filter option. At their brief orientation they'll give you a pamphlet with suggestions on where to visit, but they are all mostly taken from the Lava Dogs Hawaii site if you want to plan ahead. There are also some suggestions on dog friendly places to eat. They'll also provide a backpack with all the supplies for the day - some food, water bowl, water, towel, toys, poop bag, etc. All dogs will have a leash and a bandanna advertising for adoption, and the shelter will provide a seat belt for the dog to use in the car. The only catch is that you have to bring the dog back before 4 pm. We got paired with Riley, a roughly 4-year old girl who was a former stray. Riley was a bundle of energy and a great hiking buddy! My fiance isn't much of a dog person but really warmed up to Riley (and even ran with her on the beach). You don't really feel exhausted when you have a dog buddy to hike with. I would caution you'll want to keep an eye on where you take the dogs so they don't overheat, also because the hot lava rocks can be rough on their paws. Although Kaloko-Honokohau National Park is dog friendly, the guide at the visitor center suggested we take the trail head at the harbor to explore Honokohau Beach and the Ai'Opio Fish Trap due to heat concerns (dogs have passed out on the trails through the lava rock fields). I hope the sweet girl gets adopted - they do have programs set up for folks from the mainland to adopt. If your island accommodation is dog friendly, they even have a program set up to let you have a shelter dog stay overnight. Totally recommend looking into taking out a shelter dog, and be sure to book an appointment online and research (I suspect Story C. didn't do this, hence the 1-star review).
