UPDATE --- I forgot to update this, head to tails contacted me a couple days after and the groomer apologized for what had happened. They offered a free full service grooming and guaranteed that this would never happen again. They mentioned that the reason behind the extra cost was for de-shedding. Just an fyi. I appreciate that the groomer actually called to apologize and offered free service to make up for it. Despite everything, the customer service is top-notch. If you have a dog that sheds alot like a frenchie, de-shedding is something that is a plus. Though they should give you the option if you want it or not. ---------------------------------------- We brought our french bulldog on May 6th Saturday, our 3rd visit here because the first time they did such a great job. The second time it was medicore, there was still earwax in my dogs ears and the nails werent cut properly. Normally I dont bother writing reviews but after this third time I felt the need to write one. Now, a frenchie doesnt require a haircut so I cant judge on that. We just did a wash, ear cleaning nail cutting and brushing teeth. The third visit was absolutely horrible. We didn't notice right away but when we brought our dog home, deep inside his ears were bloodshot red and his nails were splitting like a tree branch was splitting apart. After going to ny puppy club today, which was 20$ cheaper I realized how bad head to tails did, and how overly priced they were. Our frenchie is just 7 months and head to tails was the first place we brought him to. I regret it deeply and I hope no one has to endure what we went through. read more

This place is amazing! We recently moved to the area and I found this place by doing a quick yelp search. They take great care for our dog Luna. The haircuts are perfect every single time and she stays looking amazing for over a week! Not to mention the shampoo they use on her has her smelling as good as new! Like most of the poor reviews listed here. DO NOT BRING YOUR ANIMAL HERE. AVOID THIS PLACE. GO ANYWHERE. You are better off cutting your own pets hair and grooming on your own. This way you will avoid any and all eat visits caused by this location. 3 separate times had an issue and no longer going here. Asked for a refund for vet fees and some excuse was made, because this establishment decided to express my dogs anal glands. After asking them not to. One vet visit due to this, and a groomer who groomed my dog so low he had an infection all over his private areas (penis down to testicles), because he was cut all over. For this they rewarded me with a free haircut, another time before my dog had caught Kennel Cough from here, and they determined that couldn't be their fault, but this was the only activity he had with dogs. So go figure. They did perform an anal expression on my dog again. After 1 good hair cut no issues. Asked for the dog to not be expressed, and immediately records came up saying yea we had an issue we won't. I then came back, when I came back another time. I asked for same haircut as last time. When I Picked up dog and he was uncomfortable for days, thought it was because he was shaved down. He was scooting for days, he cried when he went to the bathroom, he was not himself. I called and asked what happened. They mentioned they expressed the dog. And I immediately asked why, you caused problems before. I didn't ask for this. In dealing with management, they stopped responding after they determined it was not their fault? How I would love to know. I brought in a normal acting and behaving dog, and they tortured him with a service I didn't ask for. After taking the dog to the vet the dog immediately felt better. Because whatever they did impacted his anal glands, again I didn't ask for this. And perform this service with a trained veterinarian not a dog groomer. They determined my dog was impacted before his grooming visit, again I would love to understand how this conclusion was made when my dog was not scooting, not crying and behaving perfectly fine. All I asked for was a refund for vet bills, and to never deal with them again. They could not do this for me, and I decided to make everyone aware of this place, the horrible business practice they have, and the fact that your dog most likely will catch kennel cough, and will get impacted anal glands or worst case ruptured anal glands by a dog groomer performing something they should not. Bring your pets here at your own risk, go through the reviews. This place is not the one that you want to go to if you want a good experience for your animal. Good job grooming but unethical pricing method Summary: New customer, please make sure that you get a firm quotation before committing to their service. The two groomers that we had did a good job (but nothing special) but they will give reasons such as incorrectly defining the size of your dog and arbitrary charge you any price they want. Details: Peeps, if you are new to this establishment - I recommend that you get a concrete quote before getting your dog groomed. We were recommended here after seeing and liking our neighbor's dog - a wheaten terrier which is same breed as one of our dogs. We made an appointment and brought our two dogs to be groomed. The receptionist from Head to Tails was very friendly, and we told her that we want to get the puppy cut for our dogs. We have a Wheaten Terrier which is a medium sized dog, and a Tibetan Terrier which is medium small. We do comb our dog's hair every week and treated the hair with conditioner to reduce the tangling and matting. I know that the matter of matting could be subjective, the receptionist did say that our dog was not that matted. We asked about the grooming rate which is $60 for a medium dog however the receptionist said that there might be additional charges to dematting the dog. If the cost is minimal they will go ahead and do it - however if the matting is heavy, it might cost $20 to $30 extra for dematting but they will give us a call first for permission. However, she did admit that our two dogs might need only minimum dematting. To us, additional cost is not so important as long as it is a job well down and the price within a reasonable increase. When we came to pick our pups, the receptionist told us that the groomer is charging BOTH our dogs as a large dog. I was quite surprised as Wheaten Terrier are really medium sized dog (app 32 lbs to 40lbs) and Tibetan Terrier is considered as medium small (app. 25lbs to 30lbs). The bright side is that they are not going to charge us detangling fees since this is our first time here. But our dog does not need much dematting I said. She apologetically said that the groomer told her to charge large dog price which is $75 per dog! I told her that I might understand if you considered a Wheaten Terrier as larger dog but what about my Tibetan Terrier which is a smaller medium dog. There is no way that a Tibetan Terrier can be considered as a large dog. I asked if I could speak to the owner. During that time, in good faith I paid for the final price (my fault I guess for not getting a set price but we really feel taken for a ride). I even add tips in good faith (all together the bill comes to $180 - $75 X 2 plus Tax and $10 gratuity for two dogs). We talked to Danny the owner of the saloon who was courteous and listens to us, and he gives explanation through a price card that the final cost can be subjective to additional work done such as extra dematting and working with difficult dog. He did go to talk to his groomer about our dogs but he did admit that at least one of our dogs is not a large breed. But there was no offer of refunding the differences - but the next time when we go there, he will make sure the smaller dog will be charged as medium dog, and our bigger dog will only be charged at $70. We thanked him and we left (with a very mixed feelings that we had been taken for a ride). The grooming job was well done - we have to admit, our dogs look nice however we did had same results from other groomers. It is just more convenience to go to this place since we live close-by. We don't think that we will be going back but the more we thought about it as the evening goes by the more we are sure that there are no price structure - the pricing are very subjective. I think that with the cost of $180, we can get a better styling elsewhere (ie scissor cut etc). I think that I am being generous enough to give three stars for the level of service and grooming results but docking two stars for what we think are unethical billings. We took our elderly Golden here over the weekend and the staff was super helpful and understanding. My big guy needs help moving around and they cheerfully helped me pick him up and move him around. The groomer was sweet and didn't even flinch about trimming and cleaning up his, um, backside, which has gotten a bit yucky (if you've ever had an old dog, you know what I mean). I'm writing on behalf of my aunt (English is not her first language) but I have to say, I'm every bit as outraged and heartbroken as she is over the way this business mishandled and traumatized her dog Lucky. My uncle dropped Lucky off here last Saturday and my aunt called shortly after with specific instructions as to how she wanted her dog groomed (head mostly intact and untouched, not too much off the tail). After her shift at work ended, she received a flurry of text messages from my uncle who had already picked Lucky up from the groomers, knowing she would be upset with how everything turned out. His warnings did very little, however, to abate the utter despair she felt when she came home and saw her fluffy, doll-like Bichon shorn like a sheep, made almost unrecognizable by her careless groomer. She actually burst into tears from the shock. When she called up the shop to rightfully demand a refund or literally ANYTHING to rectify this situation they insisted that she can do whatever she wants but that a refund was impossible - they were so concerned with relaying this information to her over and over that they didn't even bother to apologize or even pretend to sympathize with her. Basically, they didn't give a flying f*** because they already had her money. She also strongly suspects that the groomer abused Lucky. Not only did she have to put ointment around Lucky's butt from practically being skinned in that area, now whenever my aunt tries to pet Lucky's head, Lucky squirms/winces/jerks her head away which was NEVER an issue before Saturday. It took awhile to find a place I'm actually comfortable with. It was as if the God's heard me begging for a safe place to bring my dog to get groomed haha. Staff is really nice , and I dig how it's in my small town of Cliffside Park. I love how I get greeted by the "manager" which is this beautiful dog that is so calm. Prices are great and they always compliment how well trained my dog is. I recommend it these people are great , haven't had a problem. Only wish they would have opened so much sooner! read more

Love this place ! The staff is friendly and professional. They recommend products that are appropriate for my puppy with out overselling unnecessary items. My yorkiepoo, Toby came in full of knots and I was worried he would need to be completely shaved down. Instead they took their time to treat his hair and set Angie as much as possible. Everything is very clean and well organized. Loved the idea of letting the dogs socialize once they've been groomed instead of putting them in cages. There are so many nice things to say about this pet shop! First of all, they are all about gaining your pets trust. Unlike many grooming shops I have been to, your pet will not be locked up in a cage waiting for his or her turn rather the puppies/dogs/cats are allowed to roam around the store and play with each other. The reason they do this is to help your pet feel comfortable, get familiar to the place so that your pet will eventually start to enjoy his or her visits! I was there for about 30 minutes playing with the puppies and I could really tell the difference between the well behaved regulars vs. the pets that have been mistreated at different pet shops who have made their first appointment with Head To Tail. Secondly, the groomer is extremely knowledgeable and genuinely cares about your pet's health and hygiene. At the end of the grooming session, he explains all the different things that he had done for your pet and what you should be doing to keep your pet healthy. I also appreciated how the groomer did not force any additional services, like some other places. Instead, he was kind enough to provide me options for my future reference. Even if you live a little out of the way, the drive is worth it! And most importantly, you will have a peace of mind knowing that your pet is in good hands. Oh and they have a babysitting service! Decided to give this place a try considering how close to work it was. I took both of my maltese babies there for a bath and cut.. after their long stay with "grandma" they both looked like mini sheep LOL. I AM SO HAPPY WITH THIS PLACE!!! They did such a wonderful job considering what my babies looked like prior to taking them there. Beware! Something very fishy is going on here. All the security cameras have been broken for weeks. You cannot check on your dog remotely, and the workers in the store can't see what's going on in the play area. I was there last Saturday and there was only ONE worker in the entire store, which means the dogs were completely unattended. I passed by there tonight and the interior monitor is still turned off. So disappointed I read all the great reviews on yelp about this place and now I'm super pissed off! I thought I was going to have a happy ending after dropping off my two older dogs but one of them snoopy has problems with bowel movements, so when my husband dropped them off of course snoopy peed and poop some girl or the owner whoever she is double question my husband about walking my dogs it isn't the first time I've taken my dogs grooming!!!! We know to walk them before taking them to any groomer!!! I spoke to the "owner" she was completely fucking nasty pardon my language and said it's not their responsibility to clean after my dogs I said I didn't have any problem paying extra why not charge me instead of giving bad customer service!!!! So yes anyone who has older dogs and also have a health problem I don't suggest taking them here! Our previous dog would be terrified of the groomers so after getting two new puppies we decided to look into head to tail after seeing great reviews! And i am very impressed!! The environment is clean and animal friendly and the staff is wonderful. Our pups Carmel and maki love staying there for daycare after their grooming. It's awesome how the dogs can roam around and play with other dogs while waiting for their owners to pick them up instead of being locked into cages.
