I had high hopes for HeadSpace Salon after seeing all the great reviews, but my experience was incredibly disappointing. During my first visit, I was told, "Come back in 6 months--too many layers!" I followed that advice and returned after 6 months, only to be told, "Still one layer left--come back in 3 months!" So, I came back today, hoping for some progress, but what I received was beyond frustrating. The stylist was rude and refused to cut my hair at all. I asked for at least a trim or some shape around my face, but he outright declined. He conveyed his refusal with a statement that was dismissive and condescending, saying he wouldn't cut my hair just because I wanted something different. I live in Rome and travel frequently, making it difficult to schedule haircuts. I'm furious that he wasted my time, especially after giving him multiple chances. I've never encountered a stylist who couldn't create a hairstyle or a transitional look for long, straight hair with fringe bangs. It makes me question his talent and creativity. I cannot recommend HeadSpace Salon based on this experience. It's disheartening to feel ignored and undervalued as a client. I see based on the other negative reviews, I'm not alone in this experience. I can speak quite a bit of Italian but I'm not fluent, so I used Google translate, because when it comes to my hair, I don't want misunderstandings. Maybe he only likes to cut Italians. I was on vacation in Italy and my hair had definitely seen better days after the 15 hour flight. I had no desire to style my own hair so I did some research and found head space and boy am I happy I did! They're incredible, they squeezed me in on an already tight schedule. He even agreed to give me a hair cut even though I had only originally asked for a blowout. They served me an espresso and water as soon as I sat in the chair and checked in often throughout the process. I had a dryer scalp from traveling and he scrubbed my scalp really well to help with the flaking and then recommended some products that would help. I love the way he styled my hair, asking for my input along the way on how I wanted it styled, how I parted my hair and how I wanted my curls to fall. I loved my experience here. I felt like a new woman walking out of that salon! I felt confident and beautiful and quiet frankly obsessed with my hair. I wish I could pack them up and take them home to America with me. They both worked together on my hair and turned my mousy brown dyed hair with gray roots into a masterpiece of ash blond highlights that disguised my gray roots. Giuseppe is a bearded angel. I got a really horrible haircut in Barcelona, and came to him about 10 days later to see if there was anything he could do to make it less awful. It was cut very short, so I didn't have high hopes beyond cleaning it up and evening it out, but Giuseppe absolutely blew me away. First of all, he seems to have a real affection for his work, and he was clearly distressed at how awful the previous cut was. He took some time to explain to me what had gone wrong, showing me which parts for uneven or left too long or too short, and then explained to me what he was planning to do to make it look pretty again. Now, Giuseppe only speaks Italian, so his explanation was a little complicated for me, but I was really touched that he took the time to explain even though it was clear my Italian was not really up to par. He treated me as if I had been through a traumatic experience, which was unnecessary, but very sweet, and I imagine many women who feel much more attached to their hair or to their appearance would have been extremely grateful that he took the problems so seriously and was reassuring about what could be done. A few things to know: no one in the salon really speaks English, which is of course not their prerogative, since they live in Italy! That said, everyone was so helpful and so kind, and very patient with my mediocre Italian, and completely willing to translate into English when they knew the word. if your Italian is not great, I really recommend translating a few critical words and writing them down for yourself beforehand, like "a little shorter" or "I want layers" or "I like to look a little sassy", or whatever. Trust Giuseppe; with just a few words I was able to communicate what I was hoping for, and he rose to the occasion. My hair is of course still shorter than I would like, because genius though he is, he cannot put hair back on my head that the Barcelona butcher chopped off, but I sincerely love this cut and I felt so much more like myself than I had for that week and a half. Giuseppe will touch you a lot! He patted my shoulder or ran his fingers through my hair while he was cutting it quite a bit. Not in any kind of creepy way, but sort of the way that people touch animals to soothe them. It is very comforting and quite nice, but if you are not accustomed to much physical contact it might be a little surprising at first. Things to know! He was unconditionally kind, and did not speak to me very much after he explained the haircut, but he chatted away to a friend of his who was there for a cut, so I think he is normally quite chatty, but since I did not speak much Italian and he did not speak any English.... Very affordable, at 50 Euro, and his staff were lovely as well. I saw at least find men and women leave the shop looking fantastic, so I am pretty confident he is good with all types of hair. I found this salon on Yelp and made my appointment through Yelp messaging (and found the response quick and the appt-making super efficient). I was a little nervous as my Italian isn't great, and I needed my hair to look good for an event during my stay in Rome. The stylist was friendly, spoke English and gave me what was honestly the best wash and blow dry I ever could have asked for. What an excellent experience with Giuseppe and his highly professional, very experienced team of assistants. I discovered HeadSpace on Yelp along with some other salons. I chose HeadSpace for the immediate, caring response I received to my questions about the services in particular their color processing as I had been traveling for four weeks and definitely was in need of color and a cut. While I used Google translate for my Italian I always received a response in English so you can be assured your questions are understood and responded to accurately. I received a confirmation notice before my appointment and a query as to if they needed to answer any additional questions. Arriving to the salon is easy as it is accessible on foot or by cab from central Rome. I took a cab from Piazza San Di Silvestri about a ten minute ride with traffic (always), but easily walkable from there on 15-20 minutes. When I arrived at the salon I was immediately impressed. It is impeccably designed and spotlessly clean. I was greeted by Giuseppe's lovely partners with such care. Beverages immediately offered and Giuseppe greeted me personally. I was so impressed with his focused analysis of my color and cut and with his partner explaining to me in English his recommendations I was in total agreement and we proceeded. This was the best 3 hours I ever spent in a salon. Foremost because it was a serene environment where the attention, although there were others in the salon, was focused on me. The color process was so relaxing as some of the previous color was slowly stripped from my hair with a combing technique I was not familiar with. Giuseppe guided that process's every step - examining, drying, reapplying until he achieved his goal. Before color was applied he did a preliminary cut which is extraordinary to watch. He is a master of the scissors and spend painstaking time to create the shape and texture of the cut. Following the final color and toner was applied again with Giuseppe's constant supervision. I was overwhelmed with satisfaction at the color he achieved - so natural but full of vibrancy. Then for the massage shampoo - a truly zen experience. Then the final cut. Once again I watched in amazement how precise Giuseppe is with a scissors. What he achieved was perfection. I am so in love with his cut and color and so is my American stylist that we will try to achieve this at home. She is a remarkable artist with hair as well. We were both very excited to see what an new direction from Italy would bring. I also watched Giuseppe style the hair of three American young women who were attending a wedding. He accomplished an Amy Winehouse up doo that was perfection. What skill. For the service and attention the pricing is excellent no more this quality of service you receive in America's best salons. I came to Rome for a week and decided to get my hair cut because I had hoped that I could find someone better than my stylist in San Diego, and going to headspace was the best decision I've made.
