a variety of dishes on a tray
Bryan J.

I was looking for a new dining experience and I found an amazing on with this little restaurant in Calgary! The restaurant is in a non-descript location, upon entering the place we didn't think it was a restaurant because we were greeted by a pool table and a bar. There were some tables and chairs but the place was almost empty when we got there (shortly after 5PM). We almost walked out because we thought we were in the wrong restaurant; a lady came running after us. Thankfully she did. They have a very small menu but it was well worth it. A young lady came to assist us with our order. She made some good recommendations and we all enjoyed the dishes. We had a mutton dish that reminded me of butter chicken; another was a beef and kale dish and the third one was a chicken and egg dish. All came served in a huge platter with loads of injera. The food was tasty and very well spiced. Loved it! What would have made the experience so much better was a little cultural education (clearly we had never eaten Eritrean cuisine before). Nevertheless it was an awesome gastronomic experience and one that I wouldn't mind experiencing again. Thank you!

Vegetarian platter with keywot & shiro on the side
Fabulous A.

The food at this restaurant is the truth!! Was very impressed! Had the veg platter & added meat & chick peas on the side and it was enough for 4 people and we even had some left overs!!

Small renovations, the bar is new. Lots of men sitting playing at the pool tables drinking beer. The waitress was young friendly and pretty

Yegna Ethiopian Cuisine - Menu

Had a wonderful evening here on the patio. Service was great and the food was so good. I've been to…read moremany Ethiopian restos but this has the best Injera. It's soft, not chewy or spongy or sour. It was a great vessel for the assorted meat and veggies platter we ordered. Oddly, the salad was a fave of mine along with the chicken and ground beef. I also had coffee service where they roast the beans in-house. Be sure to account for the half hour it takes for this ritual. It comes out with incense and is beautifully presented as per my pic. I will definitely return to try other items.

There's something about the flavor; I can't describe it, but I've found it hard to find at other Ethiopian restaurants. Aside from that, the restaurant has a nice ambience, and Anwar (the owner) and his staff are very friendly. (If you're familiar with the now defunct Ethiopian restaurant Ensira, Yegna now occupies that space.) If you're looking for late night eats, then in addition to conventional restaurant hours, Yegna is also open from midnight to 6am on Saturday nights (or Sunday mornings, to be precise), and they have a special menu for that time that apparently includes a dish for alleviating hangovers! A welcome addition to International Avenue. One of these days, I'm going to try something else on the menu!

We dropped in on a Friday afternoon (around 12:45pm). There were a couple people eating but for the most part, it was empty. The inside is spacious and they had incense sticks lit in the room. Service is slow and non-existent. You literally have to ask for everything. Our waitress asked if we were ready to order and then proceeded to leave when we said yes. She also didn't explain any of the dishes to us when she brought the food out to our table. Their on Ethiopian time; you'll know what I mean if you've been for Ethiopian food before. Menu is split into appetizers & salads, meat mains, vegan mains and drinks. - Mahiberawi ($49.99 for 4) - meat and vegetable combo platter. This easily fed four of us. Kitfo, k'ik'il, doro wot', k'ey beg wot', kale gommen besiga, ayib and special vegetarian combo of the day. It's a good variety of food although I didn't particularly find anything that stood out to my taste buds. The injera was light and airy but I didn't find it to have much of a sour taste on its own. The lamb was tasty but not much meat, mostly bone. A touch too salty. The raw ground beef was interesting; almost like a tartare. The yellow and green lentils were run of the mill but the beets and carrot/cabbage were good. Same for the kale and spinach. Worth a try but not sure if Abyssinia would be on my list to come back to.

It was full of flavour and a wonderful variety for our first experience of Ethiopian cuisine. We also enjoyed the Coffee Ceremony with the burning of Frankincense. The prices were extremely reasonable for a party of 4. I would definitely recommend this dining experience.
