Mango & Cheese waffle with vanilla soft serve
Jordyn W.

This is a nice place for bubble tea, that doesn't get too busy. The waffles are pretty good, with a couple of options for toppings. It would be nice if they had a bit more variety for toppings for the waffles, but other than that they are pretty good. The bubble tea is good as well, but definitely not the best I have had. I tried the signature black sugar black tea with fresh milk and it was pretty good. Overall, it is a cute place for bubble tea and waffles if going to play board games with friends.

Creme Brulee Milk Tea. 10/10 would recommend

I LOVE this place! Definitely comparable to places in downtown Toronto... actually, I think it might even be better. I tried the hot Creme Brulee milk tea, half sweet, and it was delicious, omg. It had a strong tea flavour and was sweetened to perfection. I also got the matcha and red bean milk shake the next day and that was also delicious. If you have space, you should also try the matcha waffles. MMM MMM. So delicious. The waffles came with bits of sponge cake. +_+ The staff are all really nice here. I didn't think that the service was slow... I mean, it's not fast-food fast, but it's nothing to complain about! They also have popular board games here like Pandemic and Settlers of Catan. Or even just a simple deck of cards. I was pleasantly surprised. I can understand why this place has 5 star reviews. I can't find anything wrong with it. They also have a good presence on social media. I tagged them in a photo on Instagram and they liked and responded really quickly. You can tell that this place really values their customers. :)

"Very matcha" dessert

I was in the Hamilton area yesterday and happened to see this well reviewed place on Yelp. Upon walking in, I noticed how small but open the space was - not overcrowded like Chatime always is. It seems to be frequented by university students since several people there had their laptops. Service was good - no complaints there. They seemed hard working and weren't just standing around talking to each other. I ordered the "very matcha waffle" to share with my husband. The waffle was made fresh as evident from the delicious smell coming from the kitchen and the presentation was alright. Where this place disappointed was the taste of the waffle overall. It isn't a good thing when the single scoop of ice cream is the best part of the $10 dessert. It also came with a few spoonfuls of red beans, some syrup, chocolate sauce and "cheesecake bits" (definitely not cheesecake bits as advertised) which turned out to be similar in taste to dry loaf cake or dry sponge cake bits. If they had run out of actual cheesecake bits, I would have appreciated being told that rather than having them substitute it for dry cake bits. The waffle itself looked fresh but tasted bland and too soft rather than having a bit of a crisp to it. Despite the disappointment with the dessert, I might be open to trying their bubble teas next time if I'm in the area since they are apparently really good. Wish I had room for bubble tea instead yesterday - now I know better to stay away from the desserts here.

Bright atmosphere and friendly staff. The food and drink were exactly what I was expecting--sweet! Very comfortable seating, good for a drink with a friend, a date, or by yourself to study/work.

This place smells fresh and fantastic! Sweet and aromatic ! We tried the Forever Rocher waffle!! It was pure chocolate nirvana...

My friend and I stumbled across this dessert place that seems fairly new! The service is so so friendly. The restaurant is clean and comfortable. They make the waffles fresh when ordered. They are fluffy and taste so so good. Check it out!

Peach green tea & chai milk tea

Great tea and dessert place in the Hamilton area - not too far from McMaster, about a 15 minute walk. I stopped by while visiting a friend who lived in the building it's attached to. They have a great variety of drink options - from loose leaf teas and iced teas to milk teas that you can add toppings to (tapioca, jelly, red bean, pudding, etc.). I ordered the peach green tea - a great refreshing option (8/10) and my friend ordered a chai milk tea which she'd give a 10/10. For our main desserts, I ordered a Very Matcha waffle which comes with matcha ice cream, cheesecake bits (think Japanese cheesecake/spongecake not New York cheesecake), red bean paste, and whipped cream. I'd give this waffle a 3.5/5 - the waffle itself is average - pretty good, and the toppings elevate the dish. For my personal preference, I wish there had been a bit more matcha ice cream because I like the creaminess it brings - it balances out the drier texture of red beans and the waffle. My friend ordered A Brownie Thing waffle and it looked amazing - vanilla ice cream, brownie pieces, sliced almonds, Oreo crumbs, chocolate sticks (like Pocky/Pepero sticks), and whipped cream. We were both struggling to finish our plates near the end - you'll definitely be stuffed, especially if you order a drink like we did. Although the place was smaller than I thought it'd be (I wish it was a bit bigger), it's a great spot to chill and to study in. There are also board games to bust out if you want to stay awhile and play which we were tempted to do.

A & J Sugar Bowl - Nuttella french toast

Honestly don't understand how this place was dead when we walked in and how they have so little…read morereviews. This place is super close to Jackson (one street over) on Cannon. The place is well lit and clean. The service was quick. The place does seem to have some regulars that come in and out. My boyfriend and I got a Nutella waffle and original milk tea with tapioca. A little sad that the Nutella waffle didn't come with strawberries but does come with whip cream and your choice of (extensive) icecream. The waffle wasn't the fluffy kind but the more dense version. The Nutella was generous!!! The milk tea was average but still good. Next time I'll try their oolong milk tea for sure :) I'll definitely be back to try their crepes and different assorted desserts they have ! Parking is still somewhat of a hassle as free parking is limited.

Stepping into A&J Sugar Bowl, one instantly feels the overwhelming warmth brought in by colorful syrups on the shelf behind the counter and the wash of delight that waffle cones dotted with candies on display give you when you know you're about to take part in a guilty pleasure. The smell of toasted sugar brushes against your nose as you feel spoiled for choice. I first spotted A&J Sugar Bowl in the Winter and passed it many times on my way home from various destinations. I hadn't stepped foot in there until recently, Spring 2015. What I found delighted me to the core. Tables along one wall with a central table covered in board games, cartoons playing on the large flat screen of the parlor and an honest to goodness sweets counter displaying candies, ice cream flavors and a crepe stand. The little woman behind the counter with the soft voice and big smile, Nancy, added to the atmosphere. She was a little difficult to understand, being so soft spoken, but she understood exactly what I wanted when I ordered. The parlor has always been empty when I passed it, and it worried me, but considering that it was midnight and I only found it in the off season, It didn't bother me. I just wanted something chocolate related. I ordered a Nutella and banana crepe. It took about five minutes to make and was still toasty when it was served to me. I took a single bite and instantly asked, why is this place empty ever? From the taste to the atmosphere, A&J Sugar Bowl should be packed all the time. Then it dawned on me. It's in a part of downtown that isn't known for its good eats or entertainment. It's hidden away and it has no online presence. I urge all local Yelpers to hunt down Sugar Bowl and enjoy your favorite sweet here. Let's all make this place Hamilton's worst kept secret!

When I lived in Montreal, my go-to cupcake place (and probably my overall favourite cupcake shop) was D'Liche, which sadly didn't make it through the covid quarantine. In London, I enjoyed Chick Cake Boss and when I came to Hamilton, I went to Bitten. However, none quite lived up to D'Liche, or even the Cupcake Shoppe...until Beyond the Batter. One bite and I deemed it my new favourite cupcake place. I had been drooling over the flavour list for probably a week now and finally convinced my brother to go grab some. We ended up with an assortment of flavours that not only sound delicious but look lovely. Work fast though because my brother got to the shop about 2.5 hours after they opened and a few flavours were already sold out. He got home with the cupcakes while my sister was on a work call. We are impatient though so we decided to try a cupcake anyways and just grabbed the one we knew she'd have no interest in - Macaroon, a coconut cake cupcake topped with chocolate frosting rolled in toasted coconut. We split it and both fell in love at first bite. My brother is not a frosting fan so for him cupcakes are all about the cake and he has been raving about how light and fluffy, yet flavourful the cake was all afternoon. As for me, I love frosting and cake and the flavours were just so spot on and rich that I was happy. Often frosting/icing can be end up tasting like icing sugar above all else but that wasn't the case here at all. When my sister got off her call, we went in for a second - Men are from Mars, a chocolate cupcake topped with malt frosting dipped in a chocolate shell with a caramel centre. It sounds like a lot but once again they nailed each flavour and they all worked together so well. I normally avoid chocolate cakes but this one was delicious and I'd definitely recommend. In fact, I'd recommended everything I've tried thus far and I'm sure that opinion isn't about to change.

Firstly, when we walked in I told one of the staff members we wanted a table for 4. He said "ok" and then walked away and didn't do anything??? Eventually we figured we were supposed to just pick a table ourselves so we sat down at one of the only empty tables and it was disgusting! There was leftover food residue and liquids all over the table from the last customers that ate there. We literally sat at this dirty disgusting table for 10 minutes just waiting for someone to bring us menus. I pushed the call button several times in an attempt to get one of the staff members' attention but they ignored all the calls. The first guy we asked to seat us at a table was too busy on his phone to even notice us and one girl was blatantly ignoring the bell sounds from the call button. When we finally got our menus we were informed that this place is cash only. Since we only had debit/credit we ultimately had to walk out. A complete waste of time TLDR: AWFUL SERVICE, DIRTY TABLES, CASH ONLY

They also cheap out by putting so much whipped cream and only a sliver of durian. - they are cash only. Not even debit?? - my biggest issue was the mandatory 10% service fee. No restaurant should ever mandate tip because it is the customer's discretion how much to give based on service. It's common practice to add a service fee for large groups, but my partner and I were only two people who stayed for 30 mins, getting only one item. Moreover, we were given no advance warning when we sat down. We weren't even told when we got the bill, and had I not looked more closely, I might have even added extra tip on top of that. I don't support these practices and won't be back.
