The Herons Rest B&B - Night stand treats

If I made a list of my favorite home-away-from-home comforts, Heron's Rest would cater to just…read moreabout every one. First, this charming boutique B&B is steps away from Quay Street--no need for a car or taxi. There are too many great restaurants and bars so close by that it's a shame I couldn't visit them all. It's also in walking distance to the bus stop that takes you to the Aran Island ferries. Sorcha Malloy, the owner and hostess has an eye for creating clean, cozy, minimalist spaces in the historic buildings that make up the Heron's Rest. Rooms are outfitted with down pillows, crisp sheets, and comfy white duvets with splashes of color from a vintage table cloth or Indian silk throw. Coffee and tea are provided, as is a rockin' crystal decanter of port for a pre-bedtime nip. The view from every room is gorgeous--swans, fishing boats, and the B&B's namesake (Arthur the Heron) float in the Galway Bay just a few feet away from your window. Rooms are stocked with robes, slippers, hair dryers, and a TV (I didn't watch the tube but noticed it was small--if TV is important to you when you travel, this place might not be for you). The bathrooms are stocked with natural bath products. Bathrooms have been renovated and are modern; showers have plenty of hot water. The two single rooms share a bath but Sorcha had plans to renovate that floor making one large room with private bath. All other rooms have their own bath. I saved the best for last--breakfast. Sorcha is a trained chef and the breakfasts were some of the best meals we had in Ireland. We started with a cheese tray featuring local cheeses, honey, and spreads. There were homemade savory scones and red currant & lemon muffins to die for. Each guest received a pot of freshly-made espresso (or tea) and a pitcher of steamed milk. Then Sorcha brought out freshly-squeezed OJ and an incredible fruit bowl with seasonal fruit (ours had kiwi, watermelon, blackberries, red currants, pomegranate seeds, strawberries--I could go on...). Local yogurt and flax were offered, too. And those were just our starters--next we chose between breakfast burritos with avocado and homemade salsa, local salmon-topped eggs Benedict, banana pancakes with creme fraiche, and a few other creatively inspired breakfast treats. Needless to say, breakfast carried us through each day until cocktail hour around 4:00. Prices were reasonable, especially given the gourmet food we were treated to. My friend and I paid $90 USD a night for private single rooms and we shared a bath. Our other friend splurged, wanting a double room with private bath, and paid around $180 (it would have been $100 a person for two people sharing). There was also free wireless throughout the inn. Finally, there are a few things I should note that didn't bother me but might bother some. Like I mentioned, don't expect high-def TV with cable; the inn is in the heart of Galway so some might find the streets a little loud (my white noise app blocked it all); and the rooms I saw were small based on what Americans are used to. Do yourself a favor and skip Galway chains like Jury's Inn or the Radisson and experience the charming Heron's Rest Inn!

The house is in a wonderful location, as it overlooks the water for a peaceful retreat. However, it is just a short walk to shopping and anything else you could possibly want to experience. Sorcha was the perfect hostess and prepares the most incredible meals anyone could ever want. Her training as a chef was witnessed, as she prepared breakfast for us each morning, and we were never dissappointed. I tried a different breakfast each morning and they were each outstanding. You will not be dissappointed if you stay here. It was more that I imagined it would be. If I ever make it back to Ireland and Galway, I will definitely stay here again. Thank you Sorcha!

All very old school; sign a register, make payment, receive pertinent info (breakfast 8:00 - 9:30, wi-fi password, etc) get a skeleton key. Our room was on the lower level overlooking the parking in back. Another car park is available in front. There appears to be a tennis court back here with no net. I forgot to ask if they use this in summer. The room included one double and one single bed. I noted several of the rooms on this lower level had multiple beds: 2 doubles, 3 singles, etc. The room also included one parlour chair, one straight back chair, a makeup table & bench, another small desk type table and bedside dressers. The en suite included a shower stall and shelf for toiletries. Two hand towels and bath towels, one bar of soap, shampoo and shower gel and three glasses were provided. No wash clothes. Heating (it was cold during our stay) turns on in early evening, gets a bit lower over night for comfort while sleeping, and turns off after breakfast. It was comfortable in the room and hallways. Breakfast includes cereals, yogurt, fruit juice, make your own toast and a few other items on the sideboard buffet. You also have a choice of eggs done your way, ham, sausage and a full Irish breakfast. A pot of coffee and/or tea is placed on the table as you prefer. We had both. First day was full Irish. Too much food! Second day eggs and ham. Still too much food! Breakfast includes a lot of food. Margaret is an excellent chef and was previously employed in the kitchen at Ashford Castle. Gerry was a guide at the Quiet man museum in Cong, and has written a book about his experiences. His daughter Lisa, who was also a guide, has compiled a tourist map of filming locations in and around Cong. The family and staff are all very friendly. There are three levels to this B&B and about 5 rooms per floor. The breakfast room extends into another room via sliding doors to accommodate more guests. It is about a 1 mile walk into Cong to the restaurants and pubs (meaning it'll be quieter here in the busy summer tourist season). Kylemore Abbey and Conamara are easy drives from here as well as the movie filming locations for the Quiet Man.

You close your eyes and feel the scorching sun washing over you and the sounds of not so distant waves are drumming out a relaxing beat against the shore. That was my welcome to the Bervie guesthouse on Achill. The place itself is beautiful with years and years of love infused into it. The rooms are bright, airy, clean and comfortable and the hosts are lovely people. They do an awesome deal for a weekend B and B with one night's dinner for around 160 Euro. This is all great but I haven't even started talking about the food yet. The breakfast was out of this world. Proper full Irish and every ingredient tasted fresh and delicious. There was a great buffet option as well with cereals and fruit etc as well as some lighter options like poached eggs and Salmon. Then we had the dinner. Wow. Best food I have tasted in an age. I had confit duck, lamb sausage and haricot beans for starter. Steak, amazingly done, with mushrooms infused with wine and veg and mash and roast spuds. Followed by a passionfruit crème brulee. I don't think I can even describe how good this food was but you can see the pics for a rough idea! The whole guest house is superb, right on the beach in one of the most spectacular spots in Ireland. I will be back, lots and lots. I cannot recommend this place enough! I'd give it 10 Stars if I could!

It had been unseasonably hot for Ireland so I had not packed adequately and purchased some shorts and t-shirts for the 85 degree weather. By the time we arrived in Keel I had worn all the clothes I purchased so we asked Elizabeth if there was a laundry nearby to wash them. She would not think of it, she took the clothes and washed them for us. I'm extremely particular about my laundry, I only air dry my clothes and Elizabeth was so accommodating to hang them outside to dry. The room was perfect and only finished second to the amazing views from our window. The beds were as comfortable as home, the beach is only 200 meters outside your door, and Elizabeth even got us a bottle of wine to enjoy as we watched the night fade over the ocean. We could not have asked for a more perfect experience.

From the small back deck you can look over this town all the way to the high cliffs that drop into the ocean, creating picturesque views of the orange, red and pink sunset. We arrived to a small sign personally welcoming us. Niall and Darra treated us like family while we stayed at their house and even dined at their table. They were personally acquainted with the entire area and gave us honest recommendations for spending our days there. We were able to see the Cliffs without crowds because of their directions. We then had the perfect dinner of local food at Roadford House where we walked along stonewalls past cows, horses, and sheep to the intimate dining room overlooking pastures. We ended the night by enjoying local music at O'Connor's Pub just a minute walk from the Sea View. We would highly recommend staying at the Sea View for at least a few nights on your trip to Ireland. Thanks again Darra and Niall, Ryan and Cristina
