I guess when your car hits 8 years, the first smog needs to happen and coincided just shy of 8 years *eye roll* I was in the area and came across Hayward Auto Care (HAC). STAR certified location which i realized (later) is overkill for my low-mileage and maintained vehicle. I was told up front the cost (was a bit surprised) and in hindsight, should've gone to a regular Smog Check location. Yes, I should've done my homework beforehand (failed) and paid more for convenience. Completed in 20mins. I would consider returning for other services. I'm not very car-savvy, but when I got my bill and searched online, the charges seem to be on high side. The shop said it was due to extensive diagnostics, but earlier he told me the diagnostic fee would be waived if I had the work done there. I understand they may spend a lot of time, but this still felt excessive. Invoice after a $150 discount and "waived" diagnosis fee: On-board computer diagnosis + retorque transmission mount, subframe, and axle nuts: $650 AC flush and recharge: $603 Replace valve cover gasket: $250 Replace serpentine belt: $145 This was for a Toyota Camry, not a European car. Ken is the only person I trust with my car. I drive a 2013 Honda Accord and I always make sure to take my car to Hayward Auto Care when I'm driving from San Diego to the Bay. I've gone to multiple mechanics in the San Diego, and I thought that all mechanics were the same, until I was proven wrong one day when I drove to the Bay and wanted to let Ken see my car before I drove back down. Immediately he noticed I had a massive oil leak in my engine that my mechanic in SD completely missed. It was actually very dangerous for me to be driving my car with the engine in that condition. And I took my car to that mechanic only a month before my trip. Not only did Ken fix up my engine, he gave me advice for maintenance that I needed in my car to prevent any other accidents that could happen. And after following this advice, I never have had any issues with my car and only come in for yearly maintenance checks and oil changes. Not all mechanics have a keen eye in checking for future damages but Ken goes above and beyond to check the car fully to make sure it's safe to drive, and as someone who constantly drives friends and family members, that's really important to me. Ken and his team figured out what's wrong with my car and gave me to option to leave it there overnight or bring it back another day since it wasn't super major. I was just driving down Mission Boulevard looking for any open Star Smog Center and saw this place. I pulled up and asked if it was even possible to get this done on a Friday evening after work. If you enjoy having the mechanic's son take your car for a "test drive" after they work on it, then look no further, this is the shop for you!! Not only will they do that, but they will also try to hide the fact that anything happened when you try to confront them! My dash cam recording captures the owner and his son taking my car out, doing some nice hard pulls at high speeds down the street. The lady at the counter then calls them letting them know I was there to pick up my car. They frantically come up with a plan to drop the son off at the Subaru dealer down the street and have the owner drive back and pretend like he was "test driving" it. When you confront them about it they will try to turn it on you and the rude lady at the counter will start yelling at you saying they had the right to test drive the car. Indeed you do have the right to test drive the car, but does this mean flooring it down the street? I don't think so. This was all captured and I tried to be cordial about it when confronting them the next day, but you'd think that after hinting to them that you saw everything they would just suck up their ego and admit to the fault. Not the case here! So if you want scummy liars working on your car this is the place! If not, I suggest you look elsewhere. And to top it all off, as I was initially leaving the shop the rude lady at the counter has the audacity to tell you to recommend the shop to your friends and family. HAH. read more

What can I say than Ken makes you comfy with car problems. I meant to write this review months ago. I had a big problem with my Jeep Cherokee last January 2022. I needed a smog test but failed. I took my Jeep 30mi to Ken and he cleared the failures; but also found out that the transmission was also broken. That was a major replacement with another transmission...$$$$. Well, Ken fixed it as as quickly as the parts arrived... you know the excuse..."COVID" delay. After the excellent repair... it ran better than new. In addition, the check engine light always came on in the past: the Jeep dealer never could address this reoccurring problem, but Ken fixed it. In this situation, Ken always kept me informed of the progress, and that I appreciated the most. Hayward Auto Care fixed the brake issue I had with my Toyota Rav4 that another well known mechanic shop couldn't fix/detect! My car would shake/rattle everytime I pressed on my brakes to slow down. It really only happened when I was on the freeway. When I explained this issue to the other mechanic shop, they took a look and then told me that the pads are still new and that the breaks were fine. I took their word for it because I have been going to them for years but noticed the brakes were getting worse over the past month. My car was finally due for an oil change and decided to try a new place to see if I could get some answers/ different opinion. Did my yelp search and ran across this business. What pulled me towards them was not just the great reviews but that it was family owned! The women in the office was very friendly on the phone and in person. I didn't have any issues with making an appointment or getting information. Brought the car in on Sunday, 9/12/21 and Ken was able to find the issue I was having with the brakes. He said that the individual parts were fine (same thing the other mechanic shop said) BUT there was an internal issue that cannot be seen at plain sight. He did a great job explaining the brake issue and handled our car with care. His personal experience and knowledge for cars is really amazing and does great quality work! Price was on point and my car was done by the end of day. I drove the car straight to the freeway right after to test it out and the brakes were smooth and back to normal! I took my car to Ken at HAC at my boyfriend's recommendation. When I took my car to the dealership, they quoted me a large arbitrary amount for what I should do to my car based on how many miles I have on my car vs. an inspection quote, making recommendations I knew were not relevant (e.g. including spark plugs in the quote due to mileage even though I had changed spark plugs fairly recently), so I decided to take my car to someone who would inspect and give my car the tune up based on what was needed and not just mileage recommendations. Hayward Auto Care saved me from a $20,000 mistake, seriously!! I have been in the market for a used Mercedes GLA 250 and thought I found my dream car down the road. It had the right year, right mileage, and, most importantly, one of the best prices I had seen for this particular car (which also happened to be about $5K below Kelly Blue Book). I took the used car to Hayward Auto Care for a Used Car Pre-Inspection and my mechanic there found some things with the car that, by themselves, did not seem to be too big of a deal, but, together raised a lot of questions regarding the ownership of the car. For instance, he was able to find some slight distortions regarding the paint job in the back right wheel well, which, when coupled with the back of the passenger seat being glued on, definitely showed that the car had been in an accident that was never reported. On top of that, my mechanic showed that, when the air conditioning was turned on full blast, there was a low humming, which we would definitely not suspect from a three year old car, especially a Mercedes! It was time for my 2002 Chevy Silverado truck to get service for another maintenance tune-up. Luckily I found this shop through yelp and they were open during the Memorial Day Weekend. The day I took my truck in, I met with Ken and his Hayward Auto Care staff and they were polite and professional of what I wanted to get done with the truck. During the pre inspection, Ken pointed out that the oil gasket cover of the engine showed some oil leaked previously and recommended to get it fix. I agreed, and insisted to get it done as well as the tune-up maintenance. Once the car maintenance was completed I was surprised not only to see the oil gasket cover replaced, but I seen Ken took the initiative to clean the entire car engine as well. This shows that Ken and the Hayward Auto Care staff take pride on their craft and taking well care of their customers cars like if it was their very own vehicles. I've come twice now for a PrePurchase Inspection and plan to keep coming until I find a car that is mechanically sound and worth the investment. Sam, the technician responsible for the PPI, has done a fantastic job keeping an eye out for everything suspect on a car. It might sound ridiculous that they've told me not to but a car twice now, but they're genuinely interested in your safety and investment. If they weren't, they'd tell me me to buy a car that needed a lot of repairs down the line in hopes that they could profit off my misfortune. That is not the case with Hayward Auto Care. They are a truthful and moral service that doesn't want to see you at all unless you are in genuine need of repairs/maintenance.
