Hayes is a store for everything sewing machines, including machines, threads, accessories, and classes. I am a beginner, and I'm so glad that I got an in-person recommendation from an expert on what kind of machine is good for me. I picked up a gently used machine that works like a charm for my basic needs (hemming, small repairs, etc). This machine was as good as new, including with the manual and accessories, but for less than I'd pay for a lower quality new machine. The staff here are so friendly and knowledgeable. I look forward to taking classes sometime in the near future. This is a must-stop place if you sew or want to learn to sew. read more

An amazing resource of information, fabrics, sewing and quilting supplies and materials and, of course, sewing machines and repair. Service is excellent. They also have a great selection of buttons which have become difficult to find since Jo Ann's Fabrics went out of business. I needed some interfacing to make a repair and the salesperson cut 1/8 yard for 62 cents. Plenty for my repair and more for later. A real gem for people who sew, quilt or do clothing repairs. read more

I live in Springfield, Delco but the trip into Delaware State to have my sewing machine looked at was well worth it. Great people, clean store. You can tell right away you'll trust their expertise. Purchased in 1972 my sewing machine hadn't been used in decades yet it's always great to have when I need it. I gave it to Hayes for a checkup which cost $89 and was ready within a week of leaving. I really liked this store and for those in Pa., yes, the drive is worth it and you can fill up your tank for less AND if you're a drinker, Delaware State is less expensive than Pa. for your spirits. read more

Excellent customer service. Stephanie is great! Her name is on the front of the building and you can tell she takes pride in what she does. She's extremely knowledgeable. I learned so much from sitting with her for 5mins while she fiddled with my machine. I'm so appreciative that a business like this is local. I love Hayes. They are attentive, super helpful, have a great selection and do wonderful work at great prices. I wish I knew the name of the man who does repairs, but he is so wonderful to sit and chat with. I brought my serger in a month or so ago and the loopers fell out of synch. I brought my machine in again and they fixed it up on the spot! I wasn't expecting to be able to take my machine home with me again in the same day, it was a wonderful surprise. I originally was taking my sewing machine and serger to Steves Sewing and Vacuum in King of Prussia but had a very bad experience. To be honest, I was somewhat shocked to be treated so well because you just don't see this kind of service anymore. I walked in with little to no experience with sewing machines but had a good idea what machine I wanted to purchase. Stephanie gave me demos showing me how to get my sewing machine up and running, provided safety tips and helped me with everything on my shopping list! It walked out with my first sewing machine with everything I needed to work on my project! I was even offered free workshop classes to learn more about my sewing machine! Great store! Super helpful service. Over the years I have brought my machine in several times for service and they have always fixed and cleaned and reset things quickly and at a good price. Recently I bought a new machine there (an upgrade - my old one is still fine, with their helpful maintenance). Last night I took one of the free classes that come when you buy a machine there. The owner came over and helped me set up the machine without my asking. After class he helped me load it into my car, again without my asking for help. The class itself was so helpful. Loretta is a wonderful, personable teacher. I learned so much - basics I hadn't yet found on the new machine, helpful tricks, and even how to fix some of the inevitable issues that come up when sewing. This store is 45 min to an hour from my house, but I will gladly travel this distance to be a loyal customer there. read more

My family has been going here for years, from when they were in Clifton and had the big yellow sewing machine outside. They are very friendly and knowledgeable. They will fix and service your machine in a reasonable time and price. There is also a great variety of new and used machines to choose from. Great for sewing serger and embroidery machines. They also have a nice fabric selection and plenty of notions. When you buy a machine they provide a class for you to learn how to use it which is extremely important and helpful. I rather drive the 30 minutes to go here for my sewing needs and to have my machines serviced then go to the place closer to my house. It is definitely a great place and it's a family owned and operated business which means pride and that to me is important!! read more

Service, service, service is Hayes motto...let me tell you what I mean. First...how long has it been since you had your sewing machine serviced? You know that fuzz you see when you replace a bobbin...it's not supposed to be there! Who knew? When you take your machine in, you'll not only get your machine humming like it was when it was new, but you also get to talk to Mr. Hayes, one of the loveliest people you'll ever meet who loves talking about just about any subject. Then there's the fabric and notions...a great line up. But here's the clincher...I recently ran out of fabric to finish a quilt and I looked everywhere for a couple of yards...no luck. What to do? I was able to find the fabric sku online by the company who makes it and called Hayes. I gave Stephanie the sky and she asked me to send a photo. Before I had a chance to take and email the photo, I got a call and Stephanie told me she found the material and had ordered it! Now that's service! read more

I just want to say a HUGE thank you to Loretta and everyone at Hayes Sewing Center. My husband and I have been looking at purchasing a long-arm machine for a while. I called a few weeks ago and Loretta spent half an hour on the phone with me answering a billion questions and providing me with a ton of information before we made the trip to Delaware, about 45 min from us. When we got there, she stopped what she was doing and took over an hour of her time to show us all the ins and outs of the long-arm I was interested in. Half an hour later we purchased the complete setup with their awesome in-store financing. We were quoted 2-4 weeks for the machine to arrive but it arrived in less than 2! When I went to pick it up, the store owner and another employee completely loaded all the boxes into my husbands truck for me. I also needed a bunch of accessories and Loretta stoped what she was doing again, and helped me once again. I can't say enough good things about this store. My mother and I had shopped there when I was a child and I'm so glad I found them again. Their service is AMAZING! They now have a life long customer! Please check them out! I work in a theatrical costume shop in PA that buys and services all their machines through Mr Hayes, and when I bought my own machine, I brought it in to get a check up. Mr Hayes ultimately couldn't fix the problem with the machine, but he didn't charge me for the time because he couldn't get it running to the level he liked. He also insisted on carrying the busted machine out to my car for me. When I buy another machine, I'm definitely coming back to Hayes. Very trustworthy and really knows what he's doing. read more

Steer clear! What a headache. I purchased a Singer Confidence model at Hayes in December 2010, it was by no means a top of the line model but was purchased for $200 at the recommendation of the owner Mr. Hayes, who insisted it was all the machine I could ever need. After a year and a half of relatively problem free use I decided it was time to upgrade to something faster and little more heavy duty as I was using the machine on a daily basis and it felt like it was barely keeping up with me. So I returned to Hayes where he again assured me that the Singer was all I needed and a machine upgrade wasn't worth the money. At the time I was happy to not have him upsell me, however 3 weeks later the Singer broke. I took it back to Hayes, approximately a 45 minute drive each way, out of both loyalty and because he seemed to stand by his product so much. They also offer free estimates which was good because for me it wasn't worth putting $75 or more into a machine that is only $200 new and clearly isn't meeting my sewing needs. Three business days later Mr. Hayes called to say the machine was fixed and the total was $95. I was shocked since I was never called with the estimate or with approval to make the repair. The next day I drove to Hayes and explained to one of the Hayes daughters that I was never given an estimate and wasn't intending to put the money into having it fixed, she was very understanding and asked what I'd be comfortable paying. At this point I could have said "Zero," and walked out, but I had no desire to take advantage of anyone, it was simply a matter of it not be economical for me to fix the machine, regardless I generously offered to pay $50 to which she agreed. When I got home I set the machine up and within 10 minutes of sewing grosgrain ribbon to cotton fabric the machine seized up in the exact manner it had before I brought it to Hayes. More frustrated than angry at this point I decided to call Hayes instead of making the drive back out there yet again. I explained to Mr. Hayes over the phone that after very minimal use it had broken almost immediately, he let out a long sigh and said I could bring it back in for a repair or just accept a refund for the repair. I then explained that I would just like a refund at this point, however asked if he could do it over the phone since it was an hour and a half drive. At this Hayes snapped, yelling, "Don't you give me that! It's not an hour and a half, you live in [Insert town name] right? Well so do I!" To this I told him, it's 45 minutes each way, an hour and half of my time and gas. Cutting me off Hayes said, "No it's not! It's 35 minutes each way!" Not the way I drive, I told him. While I don't doubt that in his years of commuting he's caught all the lights and made it in a record setting 35 minutes, but the 3 trips I made were a solid 45 minutes each way. After another long pause and sigh Hayes asked, "Can I mail you a check for your fifty dollars?" I agreed, to which he said "Good, that way I never have to see you again for the rest of my life!" And with that he hung up. Well Mr. Hayes I don't think you have to worry about ever seeing me again! read more

I purchased my first sewing machine at least 12 years ago from Hayes brand new. I return it for normal maintenance and service it has been running beautifully. I have taken several classes at Hayes and I have taken some elsewhere. As a teacher, I can say that Hayes is the best place to take classes! They are very good teachers and patient if you aren't experienced. Mrs. Hayes is so wonderfully kind and helpful! The staff here is extremely knowledgeable and always give me excellent customer service, no matter how many questions I have to ask! read more

I bought my machine in January of this year they wanted to set up instructions with me, But I told them that I live very far away and first wanted to familiarize myself with the machine. Which was fine by them. Recently I called them to set up lessons with Stephanie. She was a very good instructor plus patient with me. Than Patricia converted some of my things to sub and later instructed me over the phone how to download from a cd to usb stick. .And their service is better than I could have hoped for. I have been coming to Hayes since 1999. I purchased my first used Bernina sewing machine here not knowing anything about the brand. One of the Hayes sisters listened to what I was interested in my budget etc... and made a recommendation for me. She did not try to over sell me but found something in my price range that was high quality. I had that machine for 15 years and sold it used to fund my next machine purchase. The prices are very reasonable and I like that Mr Hayes is not trying to oversell, having said that I do think there is a time to move up to a more significant sewing machine and invest the extra bucks, especially if you will be sewing a few hours a week or more. I do only go into their shop once a year as there are closer fabric shops for me. When I went in to get my second machine Mr. Hayes forgot who I was and started with a pitch for an inexpensive machine, I listened politely but knew I wanted a Bernina for the high quality all metal housing, DC motor and accurate stitches. After our conversation I went up to one of his daughters and let them know I would be purchasing a Bernina and she helped me choose and completed the sale. Mr. Hayes has been in business for 50 years, he is in his 70's and the daughters are running the shop now. The man is not perfect but means well, I wouldn't take a run in with him personally, he has earned some patience and respect. I also took my first quilting class with Loretta Hayes and learned to free motion quilt from one of their free Friday morning demo workshops. Both experiences were excellent. If you don't want to lug your machine to class they provide you with a high quality machine (Bernina) to sew on. Occasionally Mrs. Hayes is in the shop, she is lovely to chat with and is never pushing for sales, she is just there offering her opinion if you ask. To sum it up I would say they may err on the side of under selling, know that when you go in as their prices and expertise are invaluable. read more

I have bought 2 sewing machines from this company. They are absolutely wonderful to work with. It's a family owned business and everyone there is fantastic. They have a great selection of sewing machines and everything else you need as far as sewing products (including fabric). When I bought my first machine, I had no idea what to get. They asked me lots of questions and showed me a machine which met all my needs. They did not try to sell me the most expensive machine in the place, but rather something that would serve me well. I have had to go in multiple times to ask about something I don't know how to do, or fix something I have messed up on my machine. I've never been made to feel bad about it and they take care of whatever I need (and with a smile). I no longer live close by but will travel there in a heartbeat if I need another machine.
