I am a beginner and have been taking lessons there since early Fall of '22, and I have been extremely impressed with everything so far. The lesson prices a very reasonable for all you receive, and the expertise available to you for all the services they offer is unparalleled. Likewise, I have enjoyed getting to know Iris and the rest of the family and spending time in a barn and stable that has so many decades of rich, family equestrian history. The walls in the original, wood paneled, office in the main part of the historic, century old barn, are lined with photographs of the champions bred, raised, and trained there over the years. You will not find anything like this anywhere near Indianapolis with this rich a history! If you are looking for a real working stable, this is the one. Sadly, farms, barns, and stables like this are going by the wayside due to urban expansion and changing needs. This grand old barn may not look like the newer stables with the fancy, newer looking trimmings, but she's magnificent for her age! They also have a large, wonderful, indoor riding area, which allows you to ride year round plus all the other amenities the other stables offer and more. They have the trust you can expect, the service you deserve and the experience you need, that will win you over. I wanted to take lessons from someone with lots of experience, since I wanted to learn all aspects of horses and horseback riding. I didn't know anything, but I didn't want to just show up, pay to ride a pre-saddled horse and go through the motions for an hour, and IB Stables provided exactly what I was looking for. Iris's family, along with her daughter Audra, who raises winning show horses, are the owners of the stable, are a constant presence during my lessons in the evenings. Iris raises wonderful, champion bred Doberman's and there is also a giant tom turkey who struts his stuff for all the chickens in the barn areas too! All they need now are some mini cows!! The first time I came to the stable to inquire about lessons, Iris, the owner, sat me down and asked me first, why I wanted to learn to ride, what previous experience I'd had and what I wanted to learn. This showed me that they care about ME and not just about taking my money, giving me a standard lesson, and sending me off till next week. They care about everyone who walks in the door that wants to learn to ride or board a horse or wants to use the other numerous, world-class, services they offer. That is why I chose to take my first ever lessons with them. I fun to arrive early and to watch some of the other lessons, which are mostly filled with younger kids. I have watched Iris during her lessons, and at times she can be very firm when giving instruction. Likewise, I too, have received that same firm instruction. But don't be too quick to criticize. You must remember that horses can be dangerous and weigh upwards of 1000+ lbs. Safety is always their number one concern. But, their horses are experienced lesson type horses, well-trained, patient, gentle. Every week I show up for lessons, I see the horses being cared for in ways I never thought horses needed! The ferries are there all the time, along with chiropractors and veterinarians etc. Iris and Audra are always making sure everything is attended too, and they do not skimp when it comes to the horses they own or are under their care. Campgrounds left a LOT to be desired. I stayed this past Saturday, as my dog and I were in town for…read morea dog show from out of state. I booked the spot because I needed a place to stay for the night and I stressed that a shower and toilet were essential. I was assured the bath house was nice and clean. The lady I initially spoke to was very nice. She said the rate was $35/night for primitive camping. She said they'd even throw a bundle of wood in for me. I was told I would just pay upon arrival. The day prior to leaving for my trip, I called to confirm the spot was still saved for me. I was told it was. The lady then asked if I got her text. I did not. She said she text me to let me know she was wrong on the rates and it was actually $60/night and the wood would be $20. I was upset. She called one of the owners and got approval to honor the $35 rate quoted but the wood was extra. I said ok. I clarified that I was traveling alone and would just have my dog with me. I said that I didnt want to break rules or upset anyone but would not leave my dog tied up or in car when I shower. They said it was fine and my dog could tag along as long as she stayed on a leash. All dogs on leashes. Again, I said ok. I never pet my dog off leash in unfamiliar areas. Upon arrival, I checked in. As I was standing with my dog waiting, a large black German Shepherd type approached us off leash. It came over to my 20 pound dog to say hi but my dog was frightened and trying to hide behind me. I then saw all of the hair on the big dog's neck standing straight up. I said I dont like this -- someone please get this dog NOW! So a guy did. Thankfully nothing happened but I saw the dog roaming freely again the next morning. It was obviously a dog belonging to the owners or someone working there. If it always stays up near the barn, I feel like the rule should be no unapproved dogs in the main stables/office area. Post a sign or tell people that say they are bringing dogs. That dog was obviously territorial and the situation could have turned very ugly very quickly. On to the rest of the review...... The receptionist explained how to get back to my campsite but I was confused. When asking for clarity, the man that grabbed the dog asked her if he could lead me back to my spot and she was like, "I guess." The first sites near the pond had some garbage and broken chairs nearby and I wasnt at all impressed. The guy said that the other option was by the creek. The creek was beautiful and relaxing. The grass was about a foot tall and it could have been a lot nicer if better maintained. There were some docks built around the pond and one near the creek. All of them were quite dilapidated and didnt seem safe to get on. Once it started cooling down for the eve, I went to get a shower. I opened the door to the single bathroom/shower house and it wreaked of mold. The shower was really dirty. The vanity was busted up, the toilet was beyond filthy, and there was a big piece of plywood over a giant hole in the floor. That plywood felt really soggy and was bowing under me as I stood there. I have never seen shower house conditions this bad at a campground. I pretty sure I was the only one there to camp that weekend. At first, that felt lucky for me but then I realized why nobody else was there. I didnt use the nasty bathroom at all while I was there. I opted to bathe in the creek, something I have never actually done before. That being said, this place should NOT be advertised as a suitable camping option! Further, if you're going to raise your rates to nearly double what they have been recently ($35 to $60/night), then you should absolutely make some of the necessary upgrades and maintain the campsites better. I dont write reviews often but since I relied on them to book the place and felt seriously misled by the good reviews, I decided an honest review of my experience was justified. Also, if you're going to turn horses out to pasture with their halters on, you should absolutely make sure the fencing is safe and there is nowhere they can get their halters snagged. I saw the big black mare (seal brown) with the blue halter get snagged on a very broken top rung. She started to panic when it was caught and luckily broke free from the snag after a few seconds of struggling. Basic maintenance could fix so much with this place.

We arrived early to beat the heat, which I recommend for everyone. The young staff member who got our horses ready and made sure we were comfortable did a great job. At other riding stables, my ankles have really hurt as I've ridden, but at Grandpa Jeff's, the stirrups were positioned so that my ankles were extremely comfortable. The ride was mostly in wooded areas, and my granddaughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience!

We decided to go horseback riding to celebrate my birthday. My children (10 & 12) have never been…read morehorseback riding before and, though nervous, were excited to experience it. I rode quite a bit many years ago. I had a service expectation in my mind for how things would go and unfortunately the team at this ranch did not deliver. On arrival, parking was not clearly marked (broken signs and no arrows to direct you). Once out of the car, there was no one to greet us or give next steps. We were told by visitors already waiting to step inside the barn to sign a waiver. Once inside, the staff member who wondered out of the dark handed the waiver to me and explained it. Yet she never said hello or introduced herself. It all felt very transactional or as if we weren't welcomed. I can only assume how many trail rides are provided in a day or week but the experience is still special to visitors. I would like to think they still remember this. My children were assigned horses (Cherokee and Widow) and given basic riding instructions from other staff members (they stated afterward the women providing them were not very warm). I was given a horse named Stitch that I did not enjoy or recommend to anyone who has never ridden before. He was headstrong and unfriendly. I can say: The 60 minute ride through the wooded trails was beautiful and very quiet. Our group totaled six so I guess I assumed there would be conversation from the trail lead but there was none. No water was provided or information about the land we were on. I was grateful for the instructor stopping before bigger hills to describe what was ahead and how to best handle it, it helped my kiddos, but I can't say as I would come to this place again. The horses looked thin and tired. Not to mention the barn bathroom was exactly what you'd expect: dusty dirty and rusty. Perhaps our expectations were too high? One big plus: the friendliness of my children's horses and the barn cats.
