Per the website, "Hawthorn Glen is a 23-acre nature center that primarily serves as a field trip location on weekdays for 12,000 children annually. Natural features include steep bluffs, flood-plain hardwood forest, spring-fed wetland, and a restored prairie. Visitors to this urban nature center can explore five different habitats interconnected by a trail system. The public is welcome to utilize our facility and the well-marked ¾ mile self-guided nature trail in the evenings or on weekends (the lower trail is mostly blacktopped and ADA accessible). Many seasonal programs are offered on the weekends." "Trails are designated for hiking only. Hikers are reminded to leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but memories, and watch for wildlife. Hawthorn Glen is home to deer, foxes, raccoons, opossum, rabbits, chipmunks, woodchucks, two species of hawks, many migratory birds, and songbirds of all kinds year-round." The website states, also, "Come visit our Nature Museum and see native animals of Wisconsin, including tree frogs, several species of turtles and our six foot bullsnake. It is open weekdays (4:00-5:00 pm) and weekends (11:00-11:45 am and 3:00-4:00 pm). Admission is FREE!"

Somehow this lake escaped my attention the first 6 years we lived in Wisconsin. What a wonderful…read morespot! There's a gorgeous park like setting leading up to the lake. There's a wonderful picnic area and and plenty of spots for enjoying the views of the lake. The lake itself is good for swimming, boating, kayaking, or paddleboarding. It truly is a great spot for a little bit of everything. We enjoyed a wonderful walk around the park area and along the lakefront and made a note to come back another day for some on the water fun. They are popular and so parking nearby (though there's additional lots a distance away) can be difficult on a holiday (we tried on the 4th of July) but for a normal weekday or weekend, there's plenty of parking and plenty of space for fun. Little Muskego Lake offers a lovely oasis for recreation in the Milwaukee metro. Get to it!

There are swimmers, kayaks, fishermen, waterski users and boaters. It's a fun lake for fishing until the leisure boaters start zipping around in watercraft and jet skis. There's "no wake" zones for a reason and 80 percent of people seem to completely ignore the signs and buoys. If you see an anchored boat, give them a little space. And if you happen to be the random car that slowly drives through or parks in the middle of the boat launch with no regard to trailered vehicle, be aware of what's going on please. It's a hive of activity and I'm sure nobody wants to get hurt.
