The transition of Mornington Crescent from expressing the character of dingy Somers Town to hip Camden is happening one store-front at a time (e.g. Simmons, El Parador, Patagonia, Leyas). Hawker, a delicious new Vietnamese eat-in or take-away, is a sign of the times, and a damn tasty sign at that. The Pho is excellent, full of tasty meat (chicken or beef) and vegetables, with the broth expressing just the right amount of minty-limey goodness. They use flat rice noodles instead of vermicelli, which works just fine. You can also get a small pho for less than £4, and that's more than enough for a light lunch. The service is fast and friendly, and the interior, though bare-bones, is clean and attractively minimalist. Other dishes on offer are the ever-popular Banh Mi (Vietnamese baguettes), Vietnamese spring rolls and a small but delicious variety of other rice and noodle boxes (bbq pork, chicken curry, tofu). Everything is prepared daily, and the ingredients are very fresh. It'll cost you a bit more than Pret-a-manger across the road, but it is well worth it! Hawker also offers small-batch, fair-trade coffee and espresso (mozzo), though I have yet to sample it. When I got there at 1:30, it was still packed with happy late-lunchers, so you might want to arrive on the early side if you need a table. If this is your first time venturing into the no-man's-land between Camden Town and Euston, check out the Carreras building just down the street. It's one of the only surviving examples of Egyptian-Revival (Art Deco) architecture in England, and it is fantastic! read more
