Multiple canceled flights, delays that make you question your life choices, and those moments where you are staring at the departure board like it personally betrayed you. It has not always been pretty. But then again, I have also had flights that were smooth as glass. Easy boarding, friendly crew, no nonsense, just get in the air and get where you need to go. When they get it right, they really get it right. Now let us talk about the seating situation, because this one hits close to home. It does not happen every flight, but when it does, you feel it. You are already working with limited space, and next thing you know, you are leaning outward just to exist, shoulder to shoulder with a stranger like you both accidentally bought the same seat. At that point it starts to feel like we should be splitting the cost of the ticket, because I am definitely not getting full use of mine. And speaking of things that feel a little thin, the food situation needs help. You are charging real money for these flights, and we are living off pretzels, coffee, and water. Bring back something with substance. People will pay for a decent meal if it is actually worth it. At the end of the day, I am not writing them off. There is enough good here to keep coming back, but it is time to polish things up. Upgrade the planes, give people a little more breathing room, and bring the experience up a notch. Four stars for now, with the hope that next time it earns that fifth.

Most all airports have excellent signage so that even the most oblivious can find their way. As my family has elevated my rank to, "Captain Oblivious" I especially appreciate the ease with which I can navigate. Usually finding the right baggage carousel is a toss up as most are split left and right from the entrance/escalator. 50/50 chance of getting it right unless they are labeled with the airline. Since I knew where I was going, I took my time and snapped a few pics. As I've said in previous reviews, this airport is a walk-through art show. Sacramento has a bit of that here and there, the luggage display, that big red rabbit, etc. I took a video of the lightening cloud art in the hallway to the rental cars. Enjoy!

Navigating between gates, baggage, rental counter, and ride-share is effortless and stress-free. I never feel overwhelmed here. Plus, it's Anchorage - hard to beat that.

I get a kick out of the mass of humanity that accumulates in preparation for red-eye flights in and out of ANC. Most of the year, Delta's flights out of ANC depart around 1am immediately following a flight arrival...the terminals are like half way houses for travelers, tourists and other wandering sorts who find themselves out of their hotel or home at a time when they are normally expecting to be asleep. Delta does a good job of keeping the chaos to a minimum, getting the planes loaded and in and out on time. However, there was that one time that a complete drunk made it on board and passed out in an emergency exit row...that was almost comical to watch the flight crew coerse him out of his seat so that a competant individual could man the emergency exit in the event of an emergency. I wanted to beat the idiot sensless but he was already there so why waste the energy, right? These are Delta jets here too so no small planes and generally great on-board service. The flight attendants keep liquored up in the front and sufficiently satisfied in the back to make it through the typically 5 hour flight from ANC to the lower 48. I have flown other airlines in and out of Alaska and find that Delta gives me the best service, best opportunity to upgrade and reliable departures. Oh yah, during the peak travel season they throw in some extra day time departures too...but be prepared to pay for the atypical travel times to Alaska.

However, Delta's scheduling practices and timing on the ground for arriving flights need more work. Yes, there are more air travelers in 2019, but that should not be the reason for a 35 minute delay to get to a taxi way for a flight that just landed. My inbound flight had last minute arriving gate changes that caused anxiety for flyers that had connecting flight layovers of under 60 minutes. The flight crew could do little, but meekly offered that "all flights are delayed, so you may still make your connecting flight." At my final LAX destination we had a 45 minute ground delay; we docked at a changed gate, it was 35 minutes before the plane could leave for the correct terminal.

The volleyball team is really good. They are really fun to watch. 2. Basketball games. There are both Men's and Women's teams. Both are so fun to watch. The arena is huge. I've only been to one event where they open the top deck so every seat is great. I'm not sure that it's necessarily open seating, but the massive arena allows a person some options for choice. 3. Sponsored events. Concerts and state tournaments for high schools and so forth. During all the UAA sporting events, the concessions are ran by volunteer groups who, I believe, are given some percentage of the profit. I know they at least get tips. The concessions are the one just okay part. The chicken tenders and fries are meh at best. The chicken often hard and tough, the fries sort of cold. The only other food is hotdogs and snacks like popcorn and candy bars. Beverages are pretty standard soda and water. Nothing unique in this area. There is a beer and wine booth inside the arena at the far corner. There are usually 7-10 options here. Beer, wine, and seltzers. A person is required to sit in the ropped off area while consuming alcoholic beverages. I'm not sure if this is different during a concert. The Women's basketball team holds a yearly tournament before Thanksgiving. Something to keep an eye out for!

Disorganized. Unsafe…read more Made people stand in line for entrance for hours, prohibited outside food and drink, but then offered nothing for sale inside for graduates or attendants. This meant that everyone felt sick, dehydrated and cranky on one of the most important days if their lives. Seating was so incredibly disorganized it was like bulls leaving the gate, I'm surprised no one got trampled after waiting in lines for hours. It reminded me of the Cabbage Patch Dolls sales that resulted in riots in the 80s. RIDICULOUS

Reboot is for terminal/hangar in Bristol bay in with Bristol Adventures…read more Don't get me wrong--I had an absolutely breathtaking and unforgettable experience at Katmai National Park and Brooks Falls. This was a dream trip that I had saved for, and it was expensive. Getting there was mostly smooth. The connecting flights with Katmai Air were excellent, and their waiting area was clean, comfortable, and had restrooms. The park itself was everything I had hoped for and more. The scenery, bears, and salmon made it a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. The problem was the trip home. After our return flight from Katmai, we were taken to Aleutian Air's hangar and left waiting for well over an hour. Everyone was tired, hungry, and likely a little cold after a full day outdoors. Instead of a comfortable terminal, we waited in what was essentially a basic hangar with a few chairs. There were no restrooms, no food or drinks available, and not even a vending machine. The building itself was dirty, with windows coated in years of dust and dead flies and spit stains on the walls. I fed bad that terminal employees don't have access to bathrooms either! For context, I've lived in Alaska for over 30 years, including in Bush Alaska, and have traveled extensively on bush flights. I understand that rural Alaska isn't luxurious, and I don't expect it to be. But in all my years of traveling throughout the state, I've never experienced a terminal or waiting area as poor as Aleutian Air's facility in Bristol Bay. When guests are paying around $1,500 or more for a premium, once-in-a-lifetime adventure, providing a clean waiting area with restrooms and access to basic food and drinks shouldn't be too much to ask. Katmai was worth every penny. The way the trip ended was not. I hope Bristol Adventures works with its transportation partner to improve the final experience because customers deserve to leave with the same sense of awe they felt in the park.

The work and effort they have put into the camp facilities over the years since is wonderful!! The cabins, outdoor kitchen, shower house and hardscaping are absolutely fantastic. This lake has got to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. The service and support we received from all of the staff was outstanding! They went out of their way to accommodate all the needs of our rather large group of 8 which included 4 grandkids and a dog. We caught so many fish I had to start fishing left handed to rest my right arm. We will return again and again.

Lost fishing rods at start of our trip, never got to use them…read more Return trip aircraft turned up 1 1/4 hours late at the lodge. Missed our Alaska Airlines flight from Anchorage due to Sportsmans indifference. Weather was excellent and there were no mechanical issues. The lodge was only 30 minutes flight time from Anchorage. The missed flight meant an unplanned overnight stay in Seattle and a 6 AM departure the next day. The arrogant indifference to the consequences of their incompetence was staggering!

I paid $530 roundtrip for my flight, which is pretty standard for catching an Alaskan Bush Plane out to all the remote national parks that cannot be reached by vehicle. For finding the Lake and Penn Air Terminal, I simply plugged Merrill Field into Google Maps and had no issues finding them. I parked in an open spot right beside the aircraft building. This was free of charge and all that Lake and Penn Air asked of me was to leave my car keys with them in case they had to move my vehicle for any reasons. Departing Anchorage for an 8am flight, I was told to show up at the airport by 7am. Upon arriving, I simply check in at the counter and then walked outside to a hangar-like building where they weighed my luggage bags. I was allowed to have up to 50 pounds of weight without being charged an extra fee. That was no problem. I was just venturing around Lake Clark for a few days and didn't need much luggage with me. I departed right on time at 8am. As per my usual routine, I asked one of the employees to take a photo of myself standing in front of the propeller plane, as I was venturing out to my 60th National Park! Of course, the girl obliged and took a few picks before I boarded. The Bush Plane departing to Port Alsworth had 4 rows and 8 passengers on board including myself. There was one unoccupied seat across from me in the 4th row which actually worked out well as I was able to change seats during the flight because the views flying to Port Alsworth were beautiful! Amazingly beautiful, lol! So yes, I highly recommend getting your camera and phone out ready to take pictures and videos while flying. Most of the wondrous scenery came as we were away from Anchorage and closer towards Port Alsworth. Btw, the flight was roughly about 1 hour long. Also great about Lake and Penn Air is that when I arrived at 9am in Port Alsworth, my cabin that I had reserved wasn't available until 3pm so they happily stored my belongings in their office/garage until I was finished exploring for the day and ready to be driven to my cabin by my Air B&B host. For my return flight, it was scheduled at 5pm in the late afternoon. Once again Lake and Penn Air told me they had no issues storing my luggage until departure time because I had to check out of my cabin by 11am. So that was great of them. Now...since it was so rainy and there were tough conditions throughout my Lake Clark visit, the day prior I stopped by Lake and Penn Air's office and asked them if they had an earlier flight leaving the following day for which I could change departures. They did have a 7am flight back to Anchorage and since there was space onboard the aircraft, they simply switched me without even clicking a button! Finally, for my 7am departure back to Anchorage, I had Lyle (who I believe is the owner of Lake and Penn Air) as my pilot. And...I really appreciated Lyle! here's why.... It was 7am in the morning and it was pouring rain! I was nervous to fly, lol, actually frightened. But Lyle told me not to worry I'm in good hands. Although the flight back to Anchorage was pretty bumpy and we flew through clouds the entire way, I trusted Lyle (obviously) with my life, lol, and yep we landed safely back at Merrill Field. I tell ya...I'll never understand how these pilots fly in such tough weather, but they can do it, and Lyle was a professional and I couldn't have asked for more! I'm happy to be writing this review about Lake and Penn Air. I know there is also Lake Clark Air that flies out to Port Alsworth...and people do have choices, but I am here to recommend that Lake and Penn Air are 5 stars worthy fantastic! Thank you, Lake and Penn Air, for being a memorable part of my national park journey experience.

They…read moreare a family owned on-demand air taxi that definitely meets the highest of exceptions in regard to customer service, safety, and timeliness. As I've written in my other reviews, I spent months and months and months planning a 5-week trip around Alaska to visit the eight National Parks in the nation's largest state. Without Lake and Pen Air, my Dad and I would not have met our goal of visiting all the parks. We were able to fly with Lake and Pen Air from Anchorage to Port Alsworth to visit Lake Clark National Park in July of 2019. The check in process in Anchorage was very easy and our overweight luggage was able to accommodated. Our flight was amazing as we flew over scenic, snowy mountains, glaciers, lakes, and even a volcano. Dave Wilder, Founder of LPA, was our pilot! We even made another stop along the way which was like an added bonus for me. The ride was smooth and I had complete faith and trust in Dave. My Dad and I also flew with LPA to go from Port Alsworth to King Salmon to visit Katmai National Park and Preserve. After extensive research, chartering a flight with Lake and Pen was actually the cheapest and most convenient option. As my Dad joked, the flights on our trip kept getting smaller and smaller and this time around it was my Dad, myself, and our LPA pilot Barry. We flew over Lake Iliamna, enjoyed the views, and before we knew it we were landing safe and sound in King Salmon. Barry helped us figure out where to go to find the Katmailand Shuttle and we were well on our way. I can't thank Lake and Pen Air enough for helping to make my dreams come true. Every correspondence I had with them whether it was via email, phone, or in-person was professional, prompt, and just delightful! The prices were definitely fair, the service was great, and the adventure was unforgettable. Thank you!
