I was the first Kaiser patient to get the Inspire device installed, in May 2024. I switched jobs and my company only offers HMSA, so I needed to find a new doctor. Dr Anderson has many Inspire patients, so I am hopeful that we will find the right setting for me soon. Having sleep apnea is not fun. read more

Another disappointing experience with HPN. For starters, it is impossible to get through to them on the phone. They have the messaging app, yes, but sometimes you need to speak to a person and that is an option you will never have with them. Also, when they respond through the app, it is clearly different people each time who are not reading through the previous conversation so they often don't address your concerns. Second, I don't know if the majority of their patients aren't very severe but I am extremely severe. I have had daily migraines for two years and a non-stop migraine (24 hours a day without a single migraine-free second) for 8 months and there is zero sympathy or empathy from any of the staff at the office, other than the headache specialist Dr. Kim who is very kind. The staff should be trained in how intensely painful and debilitating migraines are and should act accordingly, because if the other patients are like me, they are dealing with some VERY sick people. During my last appointment, I came in for my IV Vyepti, which insurance will only approve every 3 months. They had all of my records and my order and still managed to give me a 100 mg dose when everything stated I needed 300 mg. They admitted it was their mistake but that I would have to wait 3 more months, which is basically guarantees I will continue to have non-stop migraines for the next 3 months. This is MY LIFE ON THE LINE. read more

Yes, its a busy office. If it wasnt, I would think something was wrong. Somerimes you have to wait a little, like any office but when you get in the back, you're immediately at ease with Hollace or Miggy. They are the medical assistants. Ive been coming here for years & I have been through a couple providers however, these young men dont change. They are amazing. They change the game when it comes to patient care. I also want to add that I al *not the easiest patient some days. Neuro issues put a holt to your daily life so sometimes Im in pain & I show my frustration. ZERO stars for their office if I could!! Go somewhere else! The doctors might be nice but their administration office is horrible. I am extremely disappointed with this office. They canceled my appointment, and I had to wait months for a rescheduled one. Then, just 5 hours before the new appointment, they called to tell me I needed a referral from my PCP (military). They claimed they informed me of this on September 30, but when I checked all my messages, there was no mention of needing a referral. The lack of communication and last-minute notice is completely unprofessional. Dr. Liow is the worst neurologist I've encountered. Very dismissive and he missed serious problems on my MRI.

It has been well over ten years since my initial (and only) visit with Dr Liow. I had avoided writing a review simply because I take online reviews - especially negative ones - very seriously. I am only visiting Yelp to review recent posts for my own future care and noticed the great divide in zero stars and five stars. Obviously, I will be extremely careful: at the time of my visit, his practice was not as "independent" and I MUST grant that he is a very busy man in a demanding field. Why did I never return to his care? His highly egotistical pride that did not allow him to listen! No acceptable bedside manner, but VERY HONEST! He said "I don't have time for someone like you! I have sicker patients!" Though my diagnosis of MCI was issued by HIS STAFF and with his part-time "associate" and an "intern" in training whose credentials were quite questionable as she was still working on her psychology PhD from an online university without anyone's hands-on supervision. Bottom line: the doctor was/is indeed very busy and justly focused on "cases" he considers more worthy of his justifiably precious and limited time. He may, indeed, be great -and busy- but I gravitate toward the Caring Great with compassion toward MY case -regardless of how many millions live with dementia. So I search for caring and compassion - not just a prescription or a cure where none really exists yet anyway! All we really have and need is compassion. read more

I had a several bad experience here with the office staff and the doctors who do not act like specialist for other reasons. A neurologist ran a test, got the results, at my appointment he said yes, you have this serious neuromuscular disease, but I don't know how to treat it, good luck and walked out. The office manager pretty much harassed me until I took my review down or changed it. But, there is a setting in Yelp account page where you are able to turn off being contacted by the business you reviewed I suggest doing this. More you should know about Yelp-: There are entire companies based in India, the Philippines, Bangladesh and elsewhere that have large teams of fake Yelp reviewers working tirelessly day and night to make bad businesses look good and vice versa. As you can imagine, Yelp is a prime target. With so many fake reviews out there, people often question if Yelp reviews are even reliable. A simple Google search will give you dozens of services that can be hired to create fake reviews on any site or social network you want. read more

This would be zero stars if Yelp would allow it. I had a serious medical issue that required an EEG and an exam by a neurologist so I called and left a message for them to set an appointment. After doing so I received a message back via text saying they would respond in 5 to 7 business days (this is merely to schedule an appointment, mind you). Even then they didn't meet that meager timeline. After 19 days of waiting, I tried to respond to them via their texting platform (which they recommend as the preferred method of communication, and all I get is a blank screen that says "we're so sorry". There was no way to even leave a message. Finally after leaving an email for them, someone responded and said they could fit me in 6 weeks later for a 30 minute procedure. Due to the fact that I leave the island for weeks at a time, that king of backlog wasn't going to work and by then, I'd lost faith in the quality of their work. I pursued other options as patient service is not a priority. read more

I have several negative things to mention: I did a home study, recommended by my orthopedic surgeon, due to up and down o2levels post op. I was referred here by my PCP- probably as it is close to where I live. My complaints were not with the front desk- treated well,etc I would recommend addressing the following. (When I tried to question the results of my home study, i was ignored): 1-the report was not of the study I had- the hours of start and finish are wrong 2-I read for over an hour before finally falling asleep ( due to the equipment on my head- not their fault), but this was not noted at all- report makes it sound like I immediately was in bed and asleep. It makes no mention of my getting up twice during the night to use the bathroom- so actually out of bed, either. 3-It states ""during the 5 times I was sleeping on my back"- I cannot sleep on my back due to sinus drainage, and if I did turn that way, would wake up within a few minutes., and I have RA and pain in my shoulders, so I wake up frequently, to move from one side-lying position to the other. 4-The MD that I saw for my evaluation showed no emotion at all except a fixed smile that never changed- made me very uncomfortable. 5-and finally it is very unprofessional to have "born again Christian" photos and sayings on the wall of a medical office. I assume that they did not off- load the recording of the previous patient- the only way this report could be so wrong in times listed, etc. (the technician who gave me the equipment and instructed me in its use came running down the hall with all the parts hanging from one hand and the case in the other, and quickly put all together as he instructed me. I also suspect they are over-booked with these instruments, as it took me over 2 months to get an appointment for this in-home test, and was going to be another 4months to repeat it with a sleep study at the clinic. (also- I had one day only to do the test, as it had to be returned the next day- with this rapid a turn-over I question whether they are getting the proper names with the proper test?? I will be going elsewhere for the in-office test, as I feel this whole visit was a waste of my time and money. read more

Every time I call, no one ever picks up. I'm not exaggerating this. It's been over a month, and I've made four phone call attempts; and no one has ever returned my calls. I've left four voicemails in the past month, and no one has ever attempted to reach back out to me. However, if you need to pay a bill, they will gladly take the payment from you once you mail back the statement. If you need to reach them, it is actually best to text message them at their business phone line. They don't really answer calls. It's also a better way to be sure that you have your message documented. read more

Dr. Vimala Vajjala is one of the best neurologists I have ever been treated by. She is extremely patient, really listens, is quite knowledgeable, stays abreast of current treatments and trends, and genuinely cares about her patients. I can also say that the entire staff at HPN always treats me so kind and respectful that I'm never afraid and hesitant whenever I have an appointment. They know how to put patients at ease. Dr Liow is the worst neurologist I've ever met. He is super irresponsible,(i had a seizure because he decreased my medicine in the middle of my pregnancy after my OB strongly advised him to increased it) he is never available and he is always super late for the appointments. One time he was 2 hours late. My epilepsy was always well controlled, since I was 7yo I only had like 5 seizures my entire life (only because I skipped some doses ). I'm 35 yo now. On my first pregnancy I was in Wisconsin seeing by other dr and everything was fine (I even changed medicines during that time and it was super smooth) Now THIS PREGNANCY, where supposed to be super easy to monitor, the OB checked the levels of lamotragine in my blood and it was super low. So she increased the dosage (normal thing to do while u are pregnant once you get bigger). Everything was fine until dr Liow said he was the one who should change my dosage, and he DECREASED it for what it was. A month later, guess what? I had a full on seizure, putting at risk my life and my baby's. I could be driving, or swimming in the ocean, and all that could be avoided if dr Liow was more responsible. He never even ordered an EEG after he decreased the dosage to check if all was ok. It was a rookie mistake. A dangerous one. Not even a mistake, it was straight up medical neglect. If you are searching for a good neurologist, this is NOT the one. read more

I had a very High expectation from this office because of the high recommation from my doctors office. But over the past few months very bad serivce. I cannot get through to anyone, my doctor only wants to give me shots for my migraines, I said I have more migraines because of the botox shots switch my medication or give me something different doctor never returned my call. Just finished my 5 day VEEG here. EEG techs were Noah, Gabe, Keith, Alex, & Michael. They all took very good care of me. I felt like I was bothering them every time they had to unhook me to use the restroom or when I requested meals. But they did a fantastic job of making me comfortable & understand that's what they were there for! They checked on me regularly, making sure I had everything I needed. Dr. Liow & Dr. Bowman checked in on me during my stay & answered any questions I had. I have a follow up w Dr. Liow in a couple weeks to get the results & I'm more than happy to come back (all the way from the north shore). Although I didn't have any episodes while I was here the doctors & techs ensured me that just having the readings are better than not. Dr. Viereck is wonderful. Dr Borman was a listening ear with great feedback during her memory clinics. It was a surprise when we received a call letting us know that Dr. Borman was no longer with the practice and we would see another Doc during our appointment. We took it in stride and we had an appointment with another Dr. Our first impression of him was not a positive one. He came in without a mask, during the pandemic. He was condescending when we shared a bit of our medical history. He requested an EEG. We made appointments and also visited with a sleep study Doc who we felt was not present during our visit but going through the motions of what a sleep study entailed. After doing some research and speaking with other specialists we decided not to follow up with these tests. When I needed a refill for a prescription, I sent a text for a refill as usual. To my surprise, I received a message that we were not able to get a refill unless the EEG and sleep study were done. Dr. Viereck had mentioned these tests in the past but we had always passed on them. He did not pressure us. Dr. Viereck is the only one there who I would feel comfortable with but we decided that we want to control our medical decisions and not have a Doc tell us what to do, especially when we know it is not in our best interest. read more

I honestly had high expectations for this office only because they are highly recommended by many physicians and I knew someone who works here. I loved my visits with Dr. Vimala! She is very knowledge and I was also happy with her treatment plan. She gave me many options and also had me do an MRI which I also agree was best. My only biggest complaint is no matter how many times you call throughout the day..it is EXTREMELY hard to get a hold of someone. But like the other review, they will reach out to you and gladly take your payments. It was always so hard to get an appt because nobody ever answers the phone. At this point I'll just suffer with my chronic migraines instead of calling multiple times. read more

I don't begrudge them that cancelled appointment or the emergency because they are so important in their field and to the certain patients that are having emergencies that they choose to let others without such emergent needs wait or reschedule. In 73 years, I have never encountered a worse medical firm. Dr Liow was recommended by my wonder Cardiologist at the Castle facility, knowing that I prefer all my medical attention at Castle. I did not know at the time that Hawaii Neuroscience was the only act at Castle. I had a sever subdural Hematoma in resulting in a immediate Craniotomy at Queens on July 27th, 2018. Two month later, while visiting in New Mexico, massive infection was detected and I had another craniotomy, this time the infected scull cap had to be discarded, and I waited two and half months, wearing a helmet, for a 3-D printed replacement. This second episode all took place, and trapped, in Albuqueque, New Mexico. The whole ordeal was over in mid December, 2018. I had a single minor seizures on December 28, 2018. Returning to Hawaii in mid January, I found Queens neurological department was overwhelmed, so I sought service at Castle. I have seen Dr liow 5 times now. Every time, he has demanded an EEG every 90 days. After the results, he has said ABSOLUTELY NOTHING specific to my case. Not a SINGLE WORD OF RELEVANCE. Not even a mention of my present medications. The only thing out of his mouth is. 'It's my job to keep you from having another seizure". My other doctors at Castle, when finding out about Liow's procedures, stated is it is absolutely ridiculous to order EEG's every 90 days for a patient who had a single minor seizure in December of 2018. KEEP IN MIND: Liow's office BILLS OUT EVERY EEG AT $3000. My doctors were the first to admit that in Liow's case, IT IS STRICTLY ABOUT THE MONEY. I have tried to get my medical records transferred to Queens for over 3 weeks now. I would estimate my hold time at over 3 hours at this point. The phone system has been broadcasting an excuse "we have been experiencing difficulties with our phone system". I have been hearing this for 3 months. It is the 21 century, GET IT FIXED. Every time I call, you are asked to hold. Eventually, a computerized staff member asks you to send a text, or leave a message, and the system automatically disconnects. Which, THEY NEVER RETURN. OUR MEDICAL RECORDS ARE OUR PROPERTY. Tomorrow, April 23rd, 2021, I am driving to their main office. I will sit in there waiting room, blasting Rap music, until my records are presented to me. Jo has had a few appointments here at HPN and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Since then, we've been trying to get all affairs in order so we can better care for Jo. We requested the Dr to issue a "Letter of Capacity" to help towards gaining guardianship. The clock has been ticking and we know the disease only gets worse from here. Unfortunately, it's been 2 months since then and still no letter. Whenever we reach out to them, there's always an excuse for the delay. Then supposedly it's ready for pickup but when we request for them to mail it instead, no letter appears for about 2 weeks. It really isn't hard to send out a letter... I don't understand the hold up. Also, it's frustrating to call them. Like others mentioned, there's a long hold and you're lucky if you don't get disconnected. I find it's best to text and call simultaneously. Usually, the text response is first. Anyways besides that, we have no complaints. The Dr we see has been very friendly and resourceful when informing us of the diagnosis. Sometimes it does feel like an appointment is unnecessary because we're repeating the same thing from the last time. But I suppose if it's good for Jo, then it's good for us. We're just really glad HPN is located at St Francis. It's been very convenient. Oh and the ladies that help set up your next appointment are very nice as well. read more

It's one thing, when someone puts you down, but as a doctor you should be encouraging. Yesterday , I felt like he couldn't answer my questions, and instead making me order more medicine. Why do I need this? Please be your own doctor folks. Sometimes doctors don't know their own path when it comes to making the right decisions. Also keep in mind, you have your own PATIENT RIGHTS to make decisions. Don't feel obligated to listen to everything what anyone tells you to do. That's all. read more

In a short six months, I have had a lot of issues with my sleep therapy diagnosis and treatment at Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience (HPN). They are polite but very difficult to get a response from and certainly not proactive. Here are just a few examples: I took the sleep test but wasn't offered a sleep aid. This cost me time and money because I had to do it twice. I was there due to troubles staying asleep, and your required to sleep for a successful test, so you would think the Doctor would have thought to prescribe a sleep aid, so we'd be successful the first time. After explaining challenges in getting used to wearing the CPAP mask, the doctor or staff never offered any tips or tricks nor is there a mention that there a ton of accessories out there that can help. After a few weeks I did think to look online for accessories but as a new patient I had no idea any of that existed and could have been helped much sooner. I have been waiting 8+ weeks for a different style CPAP mask. The one I have makes me claustrophobic and causes acne. The mask was ordered sometime in mid-June, and the request to insurance was just submitted today, Aug 11. This is the second time I have been told it was submitted. Both HPN and the vendor keep claiming an equipment recall for the delay but why wasn't this submitted to insurance for approval months ago? HPNs didn't think to ask that of the vendor but told me they had done all they can in an email, and I just need to wait. It has been difficult to meet the insurance required usage for the CPAP machine with the CPAP mask I have. I received an invoice from Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience charging me to rent the equipment which would normally be waived. I believe the charges are in error or can be lessened due to incredible delay in receiving the equipment I need. At this point I am unsure because I can't reach anyone at Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience and after two emails, one sent over a week ago I have heard nothing. A few other comments: When you call the office you get a voice prompt, placed on a long hold, and eventually disconnected. They claim to be transitioning their phone system but that's been going on for at least 6 months. They have a Patient Portal but each time I have had to send multiple messages to get a response/excuse. These are unprecedented times and things are difficult. Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience's unwillingness to communicate or make themselves available to their patients just compounds what are likely normal problems. Unfortunately, I have experienced no proactivity or wiliness to do more than the minimum required. The result is a loss of time, money, and comfort for their patients. I've been taking my Mom to Dr Liow for about a year now for seizures and dementia. Dr Liow has been absolutely wonderful with my mom. Always warm and lighthearted with her, which makes a world of difference, while at the same time patiently explaining to her and to us the reason for each test, her options for treatment, including all the best research going on to treat her conditions. She may, we hope, be joining a clinical trial soon for her dementia. We love Dr Liow! Their EEG guy, Keith, is also terrific. Makes a difficult procedure feel like fun, with his gentle, upbeat manner. Also super smart and informed, explaining what the EEG is for, and each part of the process as we went. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is because of endless frustration with their completely irritating automated phone system. The staff almost NEVER pick up the phone. You have to leave a message on this phone system where a bunch of the options aren't even functional. Then they often take up to two days to get back to us about important appointments, delayed medication orders etc. We also were not pleased with Dr Baek who conducted my Mom's psych test for dementia. While she is smart and a skilled researcher we found her, and her assistant, to be condescending with my Mom during the testing and in the way she presented her findings. She read us her results as though she were at a neurology conference, not speaking to a human being. It is highly distressing for a woman who graduated at the top of her class, who has always been a high performer, to have a young doc suddenly coldly relay her failures, projections for continuing deterioration and need for "supervision" etc. We appreciate how thorough Dr Baek was, just hope she can perhaps get some coaching on how to more effectively work with elderly patients, as treating patients with respect and conveying optimism are ESSENTIAL in curbing progression. Keep up the research Dr Baek! We are grateful for that. Just please try to keep in mind how it feels to be on the receiving end when you deliver your results with the patient in the room. read more

I was so confused didn't know what to do dr was very professional helped me to understand what is going on. !! Right away got me an ekg and MRI this is a blessing as I have to fly from molokai. Although the office isn't very busy, they never answer their calls and when they do, they place you on hold immediately for over 10 minutes. You're lucky if they don't hang up on you in the process. The doctor is more interested in charting on the computer rather than speaking with the patient and learning about the health issue or concern. So much for bedside manner. Their referral process is unbelievably slow and inefficient. When a patient makes an emergency visit, one should assume that the situation is dire and shouldn't require the patient to continually check in to see why the referral has not been done immediately. Perhaps if it were their loved one, they would certainly take a quicker approach. I have never been so frustrated at every level. Incompetence or just plain apathy for their patients.
