Too many people for a few eggs
    Jessica A.

Just a review on the Easter egg "festival". It has to be the biggest mess I have ever seen. Thousands of people with tons of lines. Line to pet a chick was 40 mins +. The egg hunt was hundreds of people all ages including adults rushing into get just a few eggs. Most kids got nothing. They asked for only kids to move to the front and so then you had parents who couldn't find their kids. I just can't tell you how big of a mess it was. There needs to be staggered eggs hunts for all ages and more activities if that many people are going to be there.

Deserted and most likely forgotten, this once vibrant hub of economic activity in this portion of East Oahu has been vastly erased from the community's consciousness for a while. Normally, I would frequent Koko Marina shopping center or the Hawaii Kai Towne center in my outings to Hawaii Kai, but I felt compelled seek this place out just to see Kalama valley, the surrounding neighborhood, and the larger community. I was here on July 4, but clearly the shopping center was not at all a thriving engine of commerce in this area. Located on Kealahou Street, this derelict shopping center is nearby to the Koko Head Botanical gardens, which I included on this day trip to Kalama Valley before heading to Sandy Beach for much needed R&R before returning to work on the day after the 4th of July. Yep, gotta work on a Friday, especially when there's a crapload list I need to get done or I get busted. Anyhow, also nearby are some community parks for sports, and a cute little golf course. Kalama Valley Shopping Center reminds me a little like Aina Hina Shopping Center, but wow, I didn't know it was this bad out here. There is a private parking lot, but as you can imagine, it's virtually empty. Pretty sure it's lone active tenant, Thai Valley Cuisine isn't filling it up packed on the daily, but its good. If you are like me, TheBus route #23 passes by this shell of a shopping haven, but I think that the Thai Valley Cuisine is pretty good. (See review). Not sure what else to say about the Kalama Valley shopping center, since there's not much to review about a shopping village that's lost it's mojo. I should do some research as to why this shopping center is the way it is. Hoping that there is a revitalization plan in the works, just so it will be a better visit the next time around. This mall is like your basic community strip mall that can be a decent vestige of community pride when the investment is there and the community is behind this instead of venturing out to Koko Marina and Hawaii Kai Towne center for their everyday living and entertainment options. There wasn't much in the way of chairs and seating areas around this strip mall. There is restroom facilities here, but under lock and key. Looks like the upkeep isn't particularly good and it probably had lead to the shopping center's decline, among other issues. As mentioned before, I have faith that this shopping village can overcome its challenges and be a spotlight of economic prosperity that the entire community can enjoy. Just not recently, I'm afraid. Just gotta believe and I'll be coming back when that time has come. I do like the architecture that this shopping center sports. Reminds me of the Kona-Keahole International Airport, where the roofs are pyramid in shape. Support local! Unrated.

Whenever you head to Hawaii Kai from downtown Honolulu or Ala Moana on the island, chances are you…read morewill pass through the quaint area of Niu Valley. This small shopping mall sits between Aina Haina shopping center in Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai Towne Center & Koko Marina center in Hawaii Kai. It's a quaint little strip mall, anchored by a church, 7-Eleven convience store, and the Jack in the Box along Kalanianaole Highway. You may miss it if you're not looking for it, but it is a shopping hub, that's basically a food / restaurant stop for anyone and everyone who needs to stop here and pick up daily necessities. With that said, the Niu Valley shopping center isn't really a shopping center, just a collection of restaurants that come together to bring the community some variety in between Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai just so you don't have to travel too far into town to get what you need. I've come here twice already in the year 2020 just to check things out in the area. I noticed a couple of new additions in 2020 April, especially a new Vietnamese restaurant called "Pho Time" as well as two Japanese restaurants, called Café Asia and Gyotaku. Jack in the Box fast food restaurant has been around the property as far as I can remember - as well as the King's Chapel church. The 7-Eleven conveience store has been around for a solid number of years too. If you pass this strip mall, you're missing on a lot of potentially good eats here in east Oahu. The overall experience here at the Niu Valley shopping center can be described as underwhelming at best. While the shopping center is very much open air, it does lack that certain appeal when it comes to closed air conditioned shopping mall venues like Pearlridge shopping center and Kahala Mall, to name a few on the island. I arrived here around 1pm on separate occassions on April 2020 searching for cheap eats. The first time I discovered for the first time - Pho Time, which I assumed is relatively brand new or at least 6 months new. I can be sure that I'll be back to try this place when this pandemic is contained. Both experiences here on a Sunday afternoon seemed to be dead at best, but at least there was a few people roaming about and there was parked cars and a line of cars snaking through the Jack in the Box drive thru lane. Signs of life here on a weekend is nice, especially during a crisis. It was still quiet though, albeit eerie to see. Everything was take out only, but at least the restaurants were open. Just can't sit down and dine in though. Even the King's Church was closed for services. I'm sure it's like that across the island. You probably woudn't think it is a shopping center if you were crusing on by Kalanianaole Highway, but it's here open for your business. Come on by if you are in the area. The good thing about Niu Valley shopping center is that there is plenty of parking stalls here. Plenty for y'all to go shopping and your take out meals during this phase of year 2020. Since services for King's Church won't be held for a while, you can come here on the way home or on the way to work to pick up lunches or dinners whenever you can during this "stay-at-home" quarantine we have in place since March 25, 2020. I'm so grateful that many restaurants are open for take-out to help the community through this tough uncertain time we all are facing. I guess what makes us stronger will help us carry through this ordeal and onward to better days ahead. For me though, the shopping center doesn't feel like a real mall. Just a couple of buildings that is home to a few restaurants and a big parking lot, along with a church within a residential area and Kalanianaole Highway. While not a contemporary shopping center that you know and love like Ala Moana or even Hawaii Kai Towne Center, Niu Valley shopping center serves the community surrounding it without having to travel too far for basic stuff for everyday living. I know I spent about an hour here buying my meals while I was here and checking out the restaurants I plan on coming back to when this pandemic is more under control and we can do siit down dining again. 4.0 stars for the overall experience. 3.0 stars for the asthetic appeal, but the community needs are there. I am glad that there is a Vietnamese restaurant I can come to that I haven't tried yet near home. Support local! B

While in the hospital this Christmas/ New Years season, I noticed Queens nurses were wearing these Fanny packs to carry items from room to room (bandage scissors and necessities). It was a large size, but not too big! I asked them, "Where did you get your Fanny pack?" Well, here I am! While looking around and taking a picture, I was approached by a sales person who was personable, friendly, accommodating, and smiling. He was ready to call the other stores to transfer items if I should need them! Nice guy!!! But, I wasn't going to wait and made a decision and wanted one now to carry my cards, money, and iPhone. It was black, not the bright orange one, not my color...doesn't match any of my wardrobe. I'm lucky to have this guy come up on me. The other two didn't flinch until I was ready to cash out. My guy looked at the other guy who wanted to take the sale. My guy at roped forward took over the cash register. Some territorial situation going on there! Funny... Ross is a high-quality department and specialty store that offers discounted prices and bargains for many name brands. Because of good purchasing power, Ross works directly with the manufacturers to negotiate the best deals, with savings passed on to the consumer. And there's no fancy advertising. And Ross gives back to the community by partnering with the Boys & Girl Club of America, which helps kids achieve academic success, build confidence, and lead healthy lives. The first Ross Dress for Less store opened in 1982 in CA. Ross is presently in 43 states with the exception of New England and Alaska. The HI Kai store has been operating for 16+ years. While this store is not as large as others in the State, many have noted that the HI Kai store has better products than other stores. I don't have an opinion on this, as I don't normally visit other stores unless I'm unable to find what I'm looking for at the HI Kai store. Ross Dress for Less has almost everything you can imagine: clothing, shoes, accessories, home décor, beauty products, toys, handbags, luggage, furniture, crafts, electronics, bath & bedding, kitchenware, food, electronics. I have used and continue to use Ross for the following reasons: * Toys. You can't beat the discounted prices off of name-brand toys, esp for Christmas and birthday gifts. Be sure to ask for a gift receipt for easy returns. * Children's clothing. I'm always looking for clothes for my grandkids, as they grow so fast and outgrow their existing clothes in no time. * Activewear. I like to wear Nike Dri-fit and other active wear around the house, and Ross has them at discounted prices! * Luggage. I always seem to be looking for the lightest luggage on 4 wheels, and many that are brand names, for upcoming travel. * Bath/bedding. You'll find towels, shower rack, clothes hamper, bed sheets, mattress pads, pillows, and bed spreads in my home, and they're all from Ross! Huge discounted savings! * Paper products. I love the printed tissue papers in varying colors, gift bags, craft scissors, etc. used for gift giving. * Journals. I'm always on the lookout for journals that I use for daily Bible devotions journaling. * Furnishing of condo rental. Ross was a lifesaver when we got our condo unit, as we had to furnish it for rental. Lots of things that were needed: bar stools, kitchen utensils, dishes, bedding, shower curtain, bath towels, small appliances, trash can, cleaning supplies, lamps, pots & pans. * Seasonal. I look forward to celebrating holidays with décor around the house, e.g., spring pastel tablecloths and Easter appliques, Christmas holiday cheer furnishings, Chinese New Year gold/red dragons, etc. I am amazed at the huge savings of items, many brand name and designer names, at prices significantly lower (20% to 60%) than department stores. With the high turnover of inventory, it's important to purchase the items you want before it disappears into the hands of another purchaser. Yes, at times I feel like I'm on a fun treasure hunt, as you never know what you'll find in discovering unique and discounted merchandise with the constant changing inventory! As I usually go first thing in the morning, staff is friendly and willing to help. Merchandise is neatly stocked on shelves. This contrasts with the afternoon at this store and at other locations where staff may be tired, and merchandise has been picked over and is messily strewn on the floor and misplaced on the shelves. Also wished that the front doors open automatically instead of manually opening the doors, which makes it difficult if you have a lot of merchandise or a wagon. And it's usually Tuesday morning that I'm there, as every Tuesday is designated as senior discount day, with 10% off of merchandise if you're 55 years of age or over. Hours of operation are Mon to Sat 8:30a to 10:00p and Sun 8:30a to 9:00p. Ross is located in the HI Kai Towne Center, in the same complex with Costco HI Kai and Raising Cane. Free available parking in the private lot, however, parking may be a premium but spaces open up. Yes, I'm grateful that there is a Ross Dress for Less near my home, and I will continue to patronize them, knowing that I am the recipient of great savings! Thank you, Ross Dress for Less!

This Hawaii Kai Towne location isn't the largest though I did find some favorite items at this location sometime I think it's the layout as having a smaller sales floor does make it less overwhelming to go through each aisle which is very narrow here finding it frustrating to walk pass a shopper with a shopping cart as some aisle makes it impossible to browse pass them. The staff here is a delight as I bring my purchase with getting a huge compliment CUTE! We chatted a bit and loved the price is a fraction in comparison to other shops.
