They even had a station for us to wash our hands after. The only negative thing is that when we arrived it was a bit hard to find parking. I highly recommend volunteering at HUGS, it's a great opportunity to support an important cause! :)

Be sure to have your proof of completion online training email or certificate to show Red Cross when you get there, they will ask for it. The CPR training offered a lot of on hand practice, which is good. The instructor explains the steps and we can practice in different scenarios, overall, I think it is a good facility to get your CPR certificate. They have free parking. One thing I noticed is, if your class started at 12 PM. They will not open the door until 12 PM, so we have to stand outside to wait till 12pm if you get there early.

I am very thankful for this group of amazing volunteers that I too, ended up being a volunteer... a lil help here and there goes a long way. I like that Helping Hands is truly a nonprofit organization because they don't sell your donated goods to the people who need them. People can come get the goods for free at helping hands. Staff were always very friendly and helpful with unloading my car. They are also very good about giving me the tax write off forms. (Salvation Army has you go to a website to get tax form and I couldn't even create an account successfully on the website. Kept getting error message.) Helping hands drop off times are Monday to Friday from 11 AM to 2 PM so the drop off window is pretty limited.

They're located on Kalanianaole Highway in Hawaii Kai and share a parking lot with Calvary by the Sea Lutheran Church. The organization is one of the Hawaii Foodbank's recipients to distribute food to those in need and they serve the Hawaii Kai and Waimanalo area. Upon arrival, we were greeted by other volunteers and they were immediately grateful as they do not normally have enough volunteers to sort and distribute food. We began by placing fresh produce in boxes. There was a variety of fruits and vegetables-apples, bananas, green beans, etc. and each box was to be given to a family. Tables were set up outside of the warehouse and we lined them with more food-loaves of bread, frozen meals and veggies, soup, and even cookies and donuts. In addition, there were pallets of dry goods available that consisted of mac and cheese boxes, cereal bars and crackers. There were people lined up around the corner waiting for their food baskets. Angel Network is pretty organized in the process of distributing the food. They allow a few people to check in at once and then distribute the pre-packed produce boxes. Once they received their boxes, they could shop the line of other food. Many of the clients were so grateful and a few of them were a little acquisitive and had to be told there was a limit to what they could take. Sadly, this is a result of not being able to afford enough food on their own. Cleanup wasn't too bad. We put the undistributed food away, folded up the tables and then lunch was provided for us. One of the volunteers graciously cooked a hearty meal for the volunteers and we were told that that lunch is always provided for volunteers. Another thing that's so great about this community effort is that the clients also volunteer their time as a way to give back to the organization. Many of the volunteers that day were also recipients of the food distribution. I think Angel Network Charities is one of those unsung neighborhood heroes and to some, surprisingly in a more affluent neighborhood. Just goes to show that there are always people in need-no matter where they live. This is one of the organizations I will continue to volunteer my time with.

The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii…read more I just came back from an event with PBS Hawaii and The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii for a free screening of an upcoming episode of the PBS series, EARTH A New Wild. Entitled "Oceans," the hour-long episode reveals how scientists, engineers and fishermen can help restore our threatened oceans at Protohub that included a talk-story session with special guests from The Nature Conservancy and other organizations about EARTH A New Wild: "Oceans" where they did research and reporting from one of the most remote coral atolls on Earth (Palmyra Atoll). Why do I preface it with an event presented by Nature Conservancy? Because - In general- scientists stick to the field because they are horrible with live real people that are just normal Americans. But here is a chance for them to shine in an environment that highlights some of the important work and translates it to a wider audience. Nature Conservancy is able to work towards understanding our Pacific Ocean better and make it relevant to people's lives here in Hawaii. The staff is really passionate about their work. It is just so difficult to translate that passion into something like a 30 second bite that can get into the minds of those that have super busy lives terrestrially. The smartest thing also that I have ever seen in a ice-breaker or new thing for a group of people getting introduced to a new non-profit was that they had name tags with the website of where they want you to go to when you go home so that you can keep in touch with them. So it isn't wasted and thrown away and people don't have to write an extra something down- I thought that was so smart. - Just an aside. More info can be found about them at http://www.nature.org/ the staff here in HI was on hand at the event I went to and from the passion that exuded from them - I can just tell that they are willing and eager to get in-front of as many people as they can to share about different Nature Conservancy initiatives. There is an option to donate to their causes- many of their causes helps in both research and buying up land to set up wildlife refugees.

He has been a cherished family member ever since that fateful evening. We had him scanned at the vet, but they didn't know which company. I tried calling HHS and never got a person, then I found Cat Friends. The switch was easy with the company once I verified with the csr who the original chip belonged to. He is now an indoor only kitty enjoying the spoils of wet food, air conditioning, tv, toys, bird watching beds, and being granny's favorite fur baby. Just dont tell the others. Lol! Thank you Cat Friends for the village involved in his life. From the people who trapped and released him, to the medical team who neutered and monitored him. I will pay it forward for introducing me to my best friend. ^_^ Update: I realized I didn't include information on how others can help too! On their website, hicstfriends.org, click on ways to help. There is a donation link powered by givebutter, so you can make a one time or monthly monetary donation of your choice. There is a volunteer link if you wish to sign up for more opportunities such as clinic days, or other duties such as educating, trapping, or assisting other volunteers in feeding/trapping. You can also gift items they need such as: wet and dry cat food, gas gift cards, led flashlights and batteries, 55 and 13 gallon trash bags, paper towels, and clorox bleach for their supply pantry/clinic days. If you are unable to make the the supply drop off from 10a-2p on their clinic days, you can always give them a call and coordinate a drop off date. Clinic days involves signing up for different shifts, (9-2, 12-4p, 3p-end of shift) and different duties such as: checking in, numbering the traps and placing kitties in line for surgery, cleaning the traps and lining them with fresh paper, monitoring the cats who are waking up from anesthesia (I think this is a great opportunity for future vet med students), administration duties such as helping with paperwork or discharging cats, laundry, cleaning, and organizing. It was so well organized and it felt so great to help our furloughed hotel workers. After the event, I had reached out to Phil, their Executive Director to see if I would be able to schedule an event for our company. They were booked up through the end of the year and so he put me in touch with Ami, their Project Coordinator. She said that she would put me on a waitlist. I appreciated the effort, but really wasn't expecting to hear back. A few weeks later Ami called me and told me they had a last minute cancellation and asked if I were still interested in hosting an event. I was so grateful for the call. We just had our event this weekend. Ami was so great to work with. She also put me in touch with Jay, who was their awesome data specialist. He helped us with the electronic survey and RSVP. They were both so awesome to work with. We had partnered with the Waikiki Community Center. We were able to distribute food to 200 of our team members plus 100 of early education and residents of Ainahau Vista Senior Housing. It was probably the best day I've had since the start of the pandemic. We were able to see our awesome team members that we haven't seen in eight months. They were so very grateful for this kind gesture. I am so thankful to have met Phil, Ami and Jay. They are an amazing team and the work they do have been truly impactful to so many! If you want to do something that feels really great, go out and volunteer for one of these events. You can see and feel how much this means to the people who really need help now, more than ever.
